Abstract— The trapped noble gas record of 57 enstatite chondrites (E chondrites) has been investigated. Basically, two different gas patterns have been identified dependent on the petrologic type. All E chondrites of type 4 to 6 show a mixture of trapped common chondritic rare gases (Q) and a subsolar component (range of elemental ratios for E4–6 chondrites: 36Ar/132Xe = 582 ± 270 and 36Ar/84Kr = 242 ± 88). E3 chondrites usually contain Q gases, but also a composition with lower 36Ar/132Xe and 36Ar/84Kr ratios, which we call sub‐Q (36Ar/132Xe = 37.0 ± 18.0 and 36Ar/84Kr = 41.7 ± 18.1). The presence of either the subsolar or the sub‐Q signature in particular petrologic types cannot be readily explained by parent body metamorphism as postulated for ordinary chondrites. We therefore present a different model that can explain the bimodal distribution and composition of trapped heavy noble gases in E chondrites. Trapped solar noble gases have been observed only in some E3 chondrites. About 30% of each group, EH3 and EL3 chondrites, amounting to 9% of all analyzed E chondrites show the solar signature. Notably, only one of those meteorites has been explicitly described as a regolith breccia.  相似文献

The origin of zonal jets on the jovian planets has long been a topic of scientific debate. In this paper we show that deep convection in a spherical shell can generate zonal flow comparable to that observed on Jupiter and Saturn, including a broad prograde equatorial jet and multiple alternating jets at higher latitudes. We present fully turbulent, 3D spherical numerical simulations of rapidly rotating convection with different spherical shell geometries. The resulting global flow fields tend to be segregated into three regions (north, equatorial, and south), bounded by the tangent cylinder that circumscribes the inner boundary equator. In all of our simulations a strong prograde equatorial jet forms outside the tangent cylinder, whereas multiple jets form in the northern and southern hemispheres, inside the tangent cylinder. The jet scaling of our numerical models and of Jupiter and Saturn is consistent with the theory of geostrophic turbulence, which we extend to include the effect of spherical shell geometry. Zonal flow in a spherical shell is distinguished from that in a full sphere or a shallow layer by the effect of the tangent cylinder, which marks a reversal in the sign of the planetary β-parameter and a jump in the Rhines length. This jump is manifest in the numerical simulations as a sharp equatorward increase in jet widths—a transition that is also observed on Jupiter and Saturn. The location of this transition gives an estimate of the depth of zonal flow, which seems to be consistent with current models of the jovian and saturnian interiors.  相似文献

Quantifying glacial erosion contributes to our understanding of landscape evolution and topographic relief production in high altitude and high latitude areas. Combining in situ 10Be and 26Al analysis of bedrock, boulder, and river sand samples, geomorphological mapping, and field investigations, we examine glacial erosion patterns of former ice caps in the Shaluli Shan of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The general landform pattern shows a zonal pattern of landscape modification produced by ice caps of up to 4000 km2 during pre-LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) glaciations, while the dating results and landforms on the plateau surface imply that the LGM ice cap further modified the scoured terrain into different zones. Modeled glacial erosion depth of 0–0.38 m per 100 ka bedrock sample located close to the western margin of the LGM ice cap, indicates limited erosion prior to LGM and Late Glacial moraine deposition. A strong erosion zone exists proximal to the LGM ice cap marginal zone, indicated by modeled glacial erosion depth >2.23 m per 100 ka from bedrock samples. Modeled glacial erosion depths of 0–1.77 m per 100 ka from samples collected along the edge of a central upland, confirm the presence of a zone of intermediate erosion in-between the central upland and the strong erosion zone. Significant nuclide inheritance in river sand samples from basins on the scoured plateau surface also indicate restricted glacial erosion during the last glaciation. Our study, for the first time, shows clear evidence for preservation of glacial landforms formed during previous glaciations under non-erosive ice on the Tibetan Plateau. As patterns of glacial erosion intensity are largely driven by the basal thermal regime, our results confirm earlier inferences from geomorphology for a concentric basal thermal pattern for the Haizishan ice cap during the LGM. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The status of laboratory spectroscopic data for exoplanet characterisation missions such as EChO is reviewed. For many molecules (eg H 2O, CO, CO 2, H\(_{3}^{+}\), O 2, O 3) the data are already available. For the other species work is actively in progress constructing this data. Much of the is work is being undertaken by ExoMol project (www.?exomol.?com). This information can be used to construct a mission-specific spectroscopic database.  相似文献

New observations of H2 velocity profiles in the Orion bullet wakes are extremely difficult to reconcile with existing steady-state shock models. We have observed [FeII] 1.644µm velocity profiles of selected bullets and H2 1-0 S(1) 2.122µm velocity profiles for a series of positions along and across the corresponding bow-shock wakes. Integrated [FeII] velocity profiles of the brightest bullets are consistent with theoretical bow shock predictions. Observations of broad, singly-peaked H2 1-0 S(1) profiles in the most clearly resolved bullet wakes challenge our understanding of molecular shocks. It may be necessary to model the effects of instabilities and turbulence in the Orion bullet wakes in order to fit our observations.  相似文献

The Deep Impact oblique impact cratering experiment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Deep Impact probe collided with 9P Tempel 1 at an angle of about 30° from the horizontal. This impact angle produced an evolving ejecta flow field very similar to much smaller scale oblique-impact experiments in porous particulate targets in the laboratory. Similar features and phenomena include a decoupled vapor/dust plume at the earliest times, a pronounced downrange bias of the ejecta, an uprange “zone of avoidance” (ZoA), heart-shaped ejecta ray system (cardioid pattern), and a conical (but asymmetric) ejecta curtain. Departures from nominal cratering evolution, however, provide clues on the nature of the impact target. These departures include: fainter than expected flash at first contact, delayed emergence of the self-luminous vapor/dust plume, uprange-directed plume, narrow early-time uprange ray followed by a late-stage uprange plume, persistence of ejecta asymmetries (and the uprange ZoA) throughout the approach sequence, emergence of a downrange ZoA at late times, detachment of uprange curved rays, very long lasting non-radial ejecta rays, and high-angle ejecta plume lasting over the entire encounter. The first second of crater formation most closely resembles the consequences of a highly porous target, while later evolution indicates that the target may be layered as well. Experiments also reveal that impacts into highly porous targets produce a vapor/dust plume directed back up the incoming trajectory. This uprange plume is attributed to cavitation within a narrow penetration funnel. The observed lateral expansion speed of the initial vapor plume downrange provides an estimate for the total vaporized mass equal to ∼5mp (projectile masses) of water ice or 6mp of CO2. The downrange plume speed is consistent with the gas expansion added to the downrange horizontal component of the DI probe. Based on high-speed spectroscopy of experimental impacts, the observed delay in brightening of the DI plume may be the result of delayed condensation of carbon, in addition to silicates. Observed molecular species in the initial self-luminous vapor plume likely represent recombination products from completely dissociated target materials. The crater produced by the impact can be estimated from Earth-based observations of total ejected mass to be 130-220 m in diameter. This size range is consistent with a 220 m-diameter circular feature at the point of impact visible in highly processed, deconvolved HRI images. The final crater, however, may resemble an inverted sombrero-hat, with a deep central pit surrounded by a shallow excavation crater. Excavated distal material observed from the Earth was likely from the upper few meters contrasted with ballistic ejecta observed from the DI flyby, which included deep materials (10-30 m) within the diffuse plume above the crater and shallower (5-10 m) materials within the ejecta curtain.  相似文献

We present a Bayesian approach to modelling galaxy clusters using multi-frequency pointed observations from telescopes that exploit the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect. We use the recently developed multinest technique to explore the high-dimensional parameter spaces and also to calculate the Bayesian evidence. This permits robust parameter estimation as well as model comparison. Tests on simulated Arcminute Microkelvin Imager observations of a cluster, in the presence of primary CMB signal, radio point sources (detected as well as an unresolved background) and receiver noise, show that our algorithm is able to analyse jointly the data from six frequency channels, sample the posterior space of the model and calculate the Bayesian evidence very efficiently on a single processor. We also illustrate the robustness of our detection process by applying it to a field with radio sources and primordial CMB but no cluster, and show that indeed no cluster is identified. The extension of our methodology to the detection and modelling of multiple clusters in multi-frequency SZ survey data will be described in a future work.  相似文献

Large-scale zonal flows, as observed on the giant planets, can be driven by thermal convection in a rapidly rotating spherical shell. Most previous models of convectively-driven zonal flow generation have utilized stress-free mechanical boundary conditions (FBC) for both the inner and the outer surfaces of the convecting layer. Here, using 3D numerical models, we compare the FBC case to the case with a stress free outer boundary and a non-slip inner boundary, which we call the mixed case (MBC). We find significant differences in surface zonal flow profiles produced by the two cases. In low to moderate Rayleigh number FBC cases, the main equatorial jet is flanked by a strong, high-latitude retrograde jets in the northern and southern hemispheres. For the highest Rayleigh number FBC case, the equatorial jet is flanked by strong reversed jets as well as two additional large-scale alternating jets at higher latitudes. The MBC cases feature stronger equatorial jets but, much weaker, small-scale alternating zonal flows are found at higher latitudes. Our high Rayleigh number FBC results best compare with the zonal flow pattern observed on Jupiter, where the equatorial jet is flanked by strong retrograde jets as well as small-scale alternating jets at high latitude. In contrast, the MBC results compare better with the observed flow pattern on Saturn, which is characterized by a dominant prograde equatorial jet and a lack of strong high latitude retrograde flow. This may suggest that the mechanical coupling at the base of the jovian convection zone differs from that on Saturn.  相似文献
