Ostracods are small bivalved aquatic crustancean. They secrete shells of low-Mg calcite that are often preserved in lake sediments. Recent work has shown that the uptake of trace elements (especially Mg and Sr) into the shell may be a function of the salinity and temperature of the host water. Furthermore, ostracod shells are a source of carbonate for stable-isotope analysis. This paper reviews the application of ostracod shell chemistry to Quaternary palaeolimnology. Although such work has revealed the excellent potential of these techniques to provide quantitative palaeolimnological reconstructions, a number of problems have also emerged. These problems relate to (1) methods used for extraction of ostracod shells from sediment and their subsequent cleaning (2) post-mortem diagenesis and alteration of the shell (3) complications with the calcification mechanism (4) spatial and temporal variability in shell composition (5) the ecological tolerances of individual species and (6) the relationships between shell chemistry and palaeohydrology. To some extent, these problems are an inevitable outcome of the diversity of lacustrine systems: they may be overcome by developing a thorough understanding of the physiology, life-cycle and ecology of the species concerned, together with the modern limnology of the study site. Overall, these techniques have excellent potential in Quaternary palaeolimnology, especially when used with other palaeoenvironmental indicators.  相似文献

New observations of H2 velocity profiles in the Orion bullet wakes are extremely difficult to reconcile with existing steady-state shock models. We have observed [FeII] 1.644µm velocity profiles of selected bullets and H2 1-0 S(1) 2.122µm velocity profiles for a series of positions along and across the corresponding bow-shock wakes. Integrated [FeII] velocity profiles of the brightest bullets are consistent with theoretical bow shock predictions. Observations of broad, singly-peaked H2 1-0 S(1) profiles in the most clearly resolved bullet wakes challenge our understanding of molecular shocks. It may be necessary to model the effects of instabilities and turbulence in the Orion bullet wakes in order to fit our observations.  相似文献

We propose an interpretation of the composition of volatiles observed in comets based on their trapping in the form of clathrate hydrates in the solar nebula. The formation of clathrates is calculated from the statistical thermodynamics of Lunine and Stevenson (1985, Astrophys. J. Suppl. 58, 493-531), and occurs in an evolutionary turbulent solar nebula described by the model of Hersant et al. (2001, Astrophys. J. 554, 391-407). It is assumed that clathrate hydrates were incorporated into the icy grains that formed cometesimals. The strong depletion of the N2 molecule with respect to CO observed in some comets is explained by the fact that CO forms clathrate hydrates much more easily than does N2. The efficiency of this depletion, as well as the amount of trapped CO, depends upon the amount of water ice available in the region where the clathration took place. This might explain the diversity of CO abundances observed in comets. The same theory, applied to the trapping of volatiles around 5 AU, explains the enrichments in Ar, Kr, Xe, C, and N with respect to the solar abundance measured in the deep troposphere of Jupiter [Gautier et al 2001a] and [Gautier et al 2001b].  相似文献

Quartzite pebbles and cobbles, commonly known as Bunter quartzites, are widely dispersed throughout southern Britain. They can be traced back to Early Triassic pebble beds outcropping in the Wessex Basin and the English Midlands. Derived fossils within the quartzites confirm that most, if not all, were derived from Ordovician and Devonian terrains, over what is now the general region of the Armorican peninsula of north‐west France. In Early Triassic times that area of ancient rocks formed part of a chain of young Variscan mountains which were subject to a monsoonal climate, and shed vast quantities of eroded quartzite. Ultimately, this debris was transported northwards into what is now southern Britain, by the Budleighensis river system.  相似文献

The status of laboratory spectroscopic data for exoplanet characterisation missions such as EChO is reviewed. For many molecules (eg H 2O, CO, CO 2, H\(_{3}^{+}\), O 2, O 3) the data are already available. For the other species work is actively in progress constructing this data. Much of the is work is being undertaken by ExoMol project (www.?exomol.?com). This information can be used to construct a mission-specific spectroscopic database.  相似文献

Quantifying glacial erosion contributes to our understanding of landscape evolution and topographic relief production in high altitude and high latitude areas. Combining in situ 10Be and 26Al analysis of bedrock, boulder, and river sand samples, geomorphological mapping, and field investigations, we examine glacial erosion patterns of former ice caps in the Shaluli Shan of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The general landform pattern shows a zonal pattern of landscape modification produced by ice caps of up to 4000 km2 during pre-LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) glaciations, while the dating results and landforms on the plateau surface imply that the LGM ice cap further modified the scoured terrain into different zones. Modeled glacial erosion depth of 0–0.38 m per 100 ka bedrock sample located close to the western margin of the LGM ice cap, indicates limited erosion prior to LGM and Late Glacial moraine deposition. A strong erosion zone exists proximal to the LGM ice cap marginal zone, indicated by modeled glacial erosion depth >2.23 m per 100 ka from bedrock samples. Modeled glacial erosion depths of 0–1.77 m per 100 ka from samples collected along the edge of a central upland, confirm the presence of a zone of intermediate erosion in-between the central upland and the strong erosion zone. Significant nuclide inheritance in river sand samples from basins on the scoured plateau surface also indicate restricted glacial erosion during the last glaciation. Our study, for the first time, shows clear evidence for preservation of glacial landforms formed during previous glaciations under non-erosive ice on the Tibetan Plateau. As patterns of glacial erosion intensity are largely driven by the basal thermal regime, our results confirm earlier inferences from geomorphology for a concentric basal thermal pattern for the Haizishan ice cap during the LGM. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Fieldwork has long been fundamental to human geography; however, increasingly unreceptive institutional environments have led to a decline in fieldwork in undergraduate human geography programs. We argue that mobility research presents an opportunity to reinvigorate the undergraduate field trip in human geography. We report on a second-year field course to Noosa, Australia, that blends new technologies with conventional survey techniques to capture data on a spectrum of human spatial behaviour. Over the course of a single weekend, students collect GPS traces of tourist mobility, survey businesses on the journey to work, collect residential migration histories and trace population dynamics on Noosa beach. Over the three years the course has been running, students have constructed a large repository of data on this Australian mobility hotspot, of which we report highlights. Results from standardised student course evaluations confirm the pedagogical value of these initiatives for human geography undergraduates.  相似文献

The Kanin massif is an important trans‐boundary aquifer, which stretches between Slovenia and Italy. The groundwater is only partially exploited, mainly for water supply, but the aquifer exhibits great potential for future exploitation. Since no consistent regional overview of the hydrogeological functioning of the Kanin massif was available, the decision was made to perform a study of this area, using a pragmatic approach based on 3D geological and hydrogeological modelling. The so‐called KARSYS approach was applied, with the aim of characterizing the groundwater reserves within this karst massif and of locating the main drainage axes that carry groundwater from the recharge areas to the respective springs. Delineation of the catchment areas of the corresponding springs was carried out, and some new explanations were obtained, especially with regard to the Mo?nica spring, which is located in Slovenia and forms a potential source of drinking water. It was found that this spring's catchment area extends as far as the Italian ski resort of Sella Nevea. The conceptual model also provides a possible explanation about the underground drainage towards the Boka spring and waterfall, which has been a challenge for decades. This new explanation is based on the existence of a perched groundwater body that feeds the Boka spring via a system of conduits. Despite some limitations, the results, which consist of a visualization of the underground drainage and groundwater storage within the Kanin massif, can be used as a basis for planning the sustainable management of karst waters in the studied area. Transport between pore waters and overlying surface waters of Flamengo Bay near Ubatuba, Brazil, was quantified using natural and artificial geochemical tracers, 222Rn, Cl, and SF6, collected from multi-level piezometers installed along a transect perpendicular to the shore. Eight sampling ports positioned along the length of the piezometers allowed sampling of pore waters at discrete depth intervals from 10 to 230 cmbsf (centimeters below seafloor). Small volume samples were collected from the piezometers using a peristaltic pump to obtain pore water depth profiles. Pore water 222Rn is deficient in shallow sediments, allowing application of a diffusion-corrected 222Rn exchange rate. This model estimates the magnitude of pore water exchange rates to be about 130–419 cm/day. An SF6-saturated fluorescein dye tracer was gently pumped into deep pore waters and exchange rates estimated from this method range from 29 to 185 cm/day. While absolute rates are higher using 222Rn than SF6, rates are of similar magnitudes and the trends with distance from shore are the same – flow is greatest 6 m from shore and decreases by more than 50% further offshore. A Cl mass balance indicates the greatest fraction of fresh SGD occurs along an apparent preferential flow path in sediments within 5–7 m of the shoreline (87%). Recirculating bay waters through sediments dominate pore water advection at 10 m offshore where only 4% of the flow can be attributed to a freshwater source. Both fresh and marine sources combine to make up submarine groundwater discharge to coastal water bodies. The magnitude of fresh aquifer discharge is often a spatially variable and minor component of the total discharge.  相似文献
