The effect of changing palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment on human evolution during the Pleistocene is debated, but hampered by few East African records directly associated with archaeological sites prior to the Last Glacial Maximum. Middle to Late Pleistocene deposits on the shoreline of eastern Lake Victoria preserve abundant vertebrate fossils and Middle Stone Age arte‐facts associated with riverine tufas at the base of the deposits, which are ideal for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. New data from tufas identified on Rusinga Island and on the mainland near Karungu, Kenya are provided from outcrop, thin sections, mineralogical, stable isotopic and U‐series dating analyses. Tufa is identified in four sites: Nyamita (94·0 ± 3·3 and 111·4 ± 4·2 ka); Kisaaka, Aringo (455 ± 45 ka); and Obware. The age ranges of these tufa deposits demonstrate that spring‐fed rivers were a recurrent, variably preserved feature on the Pleistocene landscape for ca 360 kyr. Poor sorting of clastic facies from all sites indicates flashy, ephemeral discharge, but these facies are commonly associated with barrage tufas, paludal environments with δ13C values of ca 10‰ indicative of C3 plants and fossil Hippopotamus, all of which indicate a perennial water source. Other tufa deposits from Nyamita, Obware and Aringo have a mixed C3/C4 signature consistent with a semi‐arid C4 grassland surrounding these spring‐fed rivers. The δ18O values of tufa from Nyamita are on average ca 1‰ more negative than calcite precipitated from modern rainfall in the region, suggesting greater contribution of depleted monsoonal input, similar to the Last Glacial Maximum. Microdebitage and surface‐collected artefacts indicate that early modern humans were utilizing these spring‐fed rivers. The presence of spring?fed rivers would have afforded animals a reliable water source, sustaining a diverse plant and animal community in an otherwise arid environment.  相似文献

K-feldspar crystals >5 cm in greatest dimension are common in calc-alkaline granites and granodiorites worldwide. Such megacrysts are generally interpreted as having grown to large sizes early in a magma’s crystallization history while they were largely molten, owing to field relations such as megacryst alignment and megacryst-rich clusters and to crystallographic features such as zonally arranged inclusions and sawtooth Ba zoning. These features are consistent with early growth but do not require it. In contrast, experimental petrology, mineral compositions, and natural examples of partial melting of granite demonstrate that K-feldspar is typically the last major phase to crystallize and that most K-feldspar growth occurs after the magma crosses the rheologic lock-up threshold of ~50 % crystals. The near-absence of K-feldspar phenocrysts in dacite lavas and tuffs, even in highly crystalline ones, demonstrates that natural magmas do not precipitate significant K-feldspar while they are mobile. The highly potassic compositions of megacrysts (and indeed, of K-feldspar in non-megacrystic granites as well) require exsolution of albite component down to temperatures of ~400 °C. The low Ca contents of megacrysts cannot result from exsolution of anorthite and must represent recrystallization of the crystals at low temperature. These mineralogical and experimental constraints require that K-feldspar megacrysts indicate widespread and thorough recrystallization of the host granites and granodiorites.  相似文献

The use of acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) for discharge measurements and three‐dimensional flow mapping has increased rapidly in recent years and has been primarily driven by advances in acoustic technology and signal processing. Recent research has developed a variety of methods for processing data obtained from a range of ADCP deployments and this paper builds on this progress by describing new software for processing and visualizing ADCP data collected along transects in rivers or other bodies of water. The new utility, the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT), allows rapid processing (vector rotation, projection, averaging and smoothing), visualization (planform and cross‐section vector and contouring), and analysis of a range of ADCP‐derived datasets. The paper documents the data processing routines in the toolbox and presents a set of diverse examples that demonstrate its capabilities. The toolbox is applicable to the analysis of ADCP data collected in a wide range of aquatic environments and is made available as open‐source code along with this publication. Published 2012. Following a damaging magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand on February 22, 2011, an unprecedented number of displaced school children were enrolled temporarily or permanently in new schools throughout New Zealand. This study utilized accounts from primary school teachers in New Zealand, derived from focus groups scheduled in March and April 2011 for an evaluation of a disaster preparedness teaching resource, to examine how these disasters impacted individuals and schools outside of Christchurch. The educators’ focus group accounts provide an illustration of classroom responses including providing emotional support to displaced children, informal classroom discussions, curricular responses, addressing disaster rumors, and information seeking through peers. Some recommendations are provided on ways to support teachers’ important roles in disaster recovery, including targeting evidence-based guidance and teaching resources to schools enrolling displaced children, dispelling disaster rumors through schools and facilitating peer mentoring among teachers. An overarching lesson is that communities would benefit from teachers being better equipped to provide emotional support and responsive disaster education to children after disasters.  相似文献

Low-permeability clayey and silty river terrace deposits are an important component in protecting underlying aquifers from contamination by agrochemicals and other contaminants. Such deposits also record deglaciation dynamics, meltwater drainage and local climatic variations. In this study, conducted over Mississippi River terraces near Savanna, Illinois, clayey slackwater terrace deposits and sandy terrace deposits are examined using resistivity soundings, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles and direct-push conductivity logs. The clayey terrace deposits are characterized by low resistivity (10–35 ohm-m) and slow GPR wave velocity (0.07 m/ns), whereas non-clayey terrace deposits exhibit much higher resistivity (169–1,762 ohm-m) and faster GPR wave velocities (0.15 m/ns). Sandy and clayey terrace deposits may thus be differentiated and mapped on the basis of their geophysical response. Models based on resistivity soundings provide reasonably accurate estimates of the thickness of clayey slackwater deposits, but fail to reveal thin sands embedded in the clayey deposits. In some cases, the full thickness of the slackwater deposits was also not revealed. GPR profiles, however, imaged these embedded shallow sands and possibly imaged deeper sands below the base of the slackwater deposits, giving more accurate estimates of thickness. GPR also accurately resolved the thickness and character of sandy terrace deposits. Direct-push conductivity logs provide both accurate estimates of the thickness of clayey slackwater terrace deposits and a means of identifying thin embedded sands. In summary, resistivity soundings image these deposits at the lowest resolution with one-dimensional models, whereas GPR provides much higher resolution showing detailed layering within the upper several meters. Direct-push conductivity logs provide the highest resolution, but are invasive and only reveal stratigraphy at one location.  相似文献

We have constructed a numerical model of spherule formation in an impact produced vapor plume. This model tracks the expansion of the vapor plume using a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrocode coupled with the ANEOS equation of state for silica. We then include the equations for nucleation and growth as described by homogeneous nucleation theory to describe the process of spherule formation. We use this model to determine the number and size of the spherules that an impact creates. We also explore when and where spherules are formed in the vapor plume, and how this affects the size of the spherules. In general we find that smaller spherules form in the outer, faster moving, portions of the vapor plume at earlier times. This work also explores the effect of impactor size and impact velocity on the resultant spherule size. We report a simple linear dependence on impactor size and a complex dependence on impact velocity. We find that a 10 km diameter asteroid impacting at a velocity of ~21 km/s creates spherules that are ~250 μm in diameter which is comparable to the spherules found in the K/Pg boundary layer.  相似文献

In this paper, we present G′/G-expansion method, exp-function method, modified F-expansion method as well as the traveling wave hypothesis for finding the exact traveling wave solutions of the quantum Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation which arises in quantum magneto-plasmas. By these methods, rich families of exact solutions have been obtained, including soliton solutions. This work continues to reinforce the idea that the proposed methods, with the help of symbolic computation, provide a powerful mathematical tool for solving nonlinear partial differential equations.  相似文献
