Uplift rates of the Loyalty Islands as determined by 230Th234U dating of raised coral terraces

Uplift rates of the Loyalty Islands (S.W. Pacific) have been determined from ${}^{230}\text{Th}{}^{234}\text{U}$ dating of raised coral terraces standing 2 to 7.5 m above sea level. The ages of the terraces on Ouvéa and Lifou correspond closely to previously documented periods of high sea levels at 120,000 and 180,000 yr BP. A +2-m terrace on Beautemps-Beaupré is considered to be beyond the range of the dating technique. The uplift rates of the various islands show a decrease toward the west. This lends support to the hypothesis of a lithospheric bulge of the leading edge of the Australian plate prior to its subduction at the level of the New Hebrides trench.     

Properties of pressure fluctuations in an atmospheric boundary layer

From experimental data it is shown that there is a relationship between measured wind speed and associated micropressure levels. It is also shown that turbulent eddies associated with the wind vanish within distances of five to six times their size, and that these eddies exhibit normal dispersion. These results confirm, at the atmospheric scales, results previously observed only in model experiments.     

Volatiles from Hawaiian submarine basalts determined by dynamic high temperature mass spectrometry

Quantitative measurements of volatiles from Hawaiian submarine basalts have been made using a Knudsen cell dynamic-mass spectrometer system. The principal advantage of the technique is the ability to determine simultaneously the absolute amounts of more than one volatile released from the same sample.From mass pyrograms it was observed that the release of water was bimodal, with the major release occurring above 600°C. Water released below this temperature is believed not to have been present in the magma at the time of extrusion. Sulfur dioxide was evolved only after the bulk of the water was released and coincided with the general expansion and melting of the sample. Sulfur and carbon- containing gases which were released in surges (above 1000°C) correspond to the bursting of bubbles from the softened basalt.The molar amounts of vesicle gases were plotted as a function of extrusion depth. A change in the slope of the resulting linear curve indicates saturation of the basalt with respect to water.
