National Parks in Britain are not in areas of wilderness, but inhabited and farmed land. This makes management of the Parks difficult and insufficient moral and financial support from local authorities has led to their progressive deterioration. Si87/Sr86 ratios have been determined for lavas and py lastic rocks from three basalt-andesite centers along the Lesser Antilles arc—Mt. Misery on the island of St. Kitts, Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent, and Carriacou, an island of The Grenadines. The average Si87/Sr86 content of these rocks is 0.7038 for Mt. Misery, 0.7041 for Soufriere, and 0.7053 for Carriacou. All the Sr87/Sr86 values from each center are the same within analytical uncertainty (±0.0002). The constancy of strontium isotopic data within each center supports the hypothesis that basalts and andesites for each specific center investigated are generated from the same source — in agreement with petrographic and major- and minor-element data. Strontium isotopic compositions and elemental concentrations, particularly of strontium and nickel, indicate that this source was mantle peridotite and that the relationship between the respective basalts and andesites is probably fractional crystallization.Publication authorized by the Director, U.S. Geological Survey.  相似文献

Five facies associations are present in the basin-filling Namurian sediments (Grindslow Shales and Kinderscout Grit) of the southern Central Pennine Basin of England. Visual study of sequences fails to disclose any pattern in the occurrence of facies. A simple mathematical statistical analysis shows that patterns do occur and approximate models can be proposed. The homogeneous siltstones (facies A) occur roughly in accord with a Poisson process model; the striped siltstones (facies B) of the sequence deviate from a renewal process model in many ways and may be most nearly approximated by some process showing trend in the rate of occurrence of events; the sharp-based sandstones (facies C) seem to occur in agreement with some type of renewal process, but not a Poissonian variety. The intervals between the sediment-building periods of these facies categories may be renewal processes of some kind, although all deviate from a simple Poisson model. Owing to the limitations of the data available only tentative conclusions can be drawn.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Oft wird zwischen Klüften und Verschiebungen ein genetischer Zusammenhang gesehen. Neuere Untersuchungen lassen einen grundsätzlichen Unterschied erkennen: Die gemeinen Klüfte entstehen durch spröden Bruch im Anschluß an eine elastische Deformation; Verschiebungen und ihnen zugeordnete Klüfte gehen zumeist aus einer plastischen Deformation hervor. Auch sind Verschiebungen an begrenzte Zonen gebunden und meist gefügefremd, obwohl sie sich bestehenden Kluftsystemen anpassen können. Die Systeme der gemeinen Klüfte sind dagegen fast gleichmäßig auf weite Bereiche verteilt und passen sich dem bestehenden Gesteinsgefüge an. Zur Deutung der Bruchtektonik sollten deshalb klufttektonische Analysen nur mit äußerster Vorsicht herangezogen werden.
Joints and faults are commonly regarded as genetically related. Recent investigations, however, tend to bring out a fundamental genetic distinction: Common joints form by brittle fracture following elastic deformation; faults result from ductile fracture. Moreover, faults and related joints are restricted to narrow zones and rarely conform with preexisting fabric, while common joints are regionally pervasive and are fabric controlled. When evaluating fracture analyses, therefore, the genetic distinction between common joints and faults must be borne in mind.

Les joints banaux proviennent d'une rupture cassante, à la suite d'une déformation élastique. Les failles suivent une rupture plastique. En plus, les failles et les joints qui leur sont apparentés sont restreints à des zones plus ou moins étroites et se conforment rarement à la structure interne de la roche, trandis que les joints banaux ont une distribution régionale, et sont liés à la structure interne. L'analyse des ruptures géologiques doit, par conséquent, tenir compte d'une distinction fondamentale entre joints banaux, et joints apparentés aux failles.

Lamprophyric dikes, mainly of camptonite/monchiquite affinities occur in the Wiedemanns Fjord area. One example contains a complex assemblage of olivine-orthopyroxene-chrome spinel nodules, megacrysts of kaersutite, diopside, strongly reverse-zoned green salite and various spinel phases. Microprobe analyses are presented for all these phases and for the lilac-coloured titansalites and strongly-coloured kaersutites of the groundmass. It is concluded that these minerals record evolution under various P, T and oxidation regimes during the formation of a lamprophyric parent magma. The nodules provide evidence for deep fractures in this area supposedly associated with early rifting in the North Atlantic.  相似文献

The behaviour and oxygen consumption rates of adult mud snails, exposed to five metals individually (arsenic, cadmium, copper, silver and zinc) and to one combination of two metals (cadmium and copper), have been examined. The oxygen uptake of distressed and retracted snails was found to be lower than that of controls after exposure to all individual metals except cadmium, which resulted in an elevation of oxygen consumption. The combination of copper and cadmium resulted in a lower rate than either metal alone.  相似文献

The results of radiometric dating of granitic rocks around Kotanopan near the west coast of Central Sumatra indicate an average age of 45 million years.Granites from the Lassi Mass in the Padang Highlands, Central Sumatra, and the Lampong Mass, South Sumatra, possess radiometric ages of ca. 112 and ca. 88 m.y., respectively. Granites and other rocks from the offshore areas north of Java indicate an average age of 100 m.y.Late Cretaceous granitic rocks are present in the islands of the Sunda Shelf namely Anambas (ca. 86 m.y.), Tembelan (ca. 85 m.y.) and Natuna (ca. 75 m.y.).Late Paleozoic granites possessing ages of ca. 276–298 m.y. are encountered in the basement rocks near Djambi, South Sumatra.The outcome of this radiometric age dating proves to be significant for it permits a fresh analysis of the geological evolution of Indonesia based on the plate-tectonics concept.The Tertiary volcano-plutonic arc exposed along the west coast of Sumatra can be traced to the south coast of Java. The corresponding subduction zone can be found in the islands west of Sumatra and the submarine ridge south of Java.The Late Cretaceous plutonic belt of Sumatra does not continue to Java but passes north of it, running however parallel to the subduction zone of Java. These two zones merge in the Meratus Mountains of Southeast Kalimantan.Sumatra was already a volcano-plutonic arc during Permian time, suggesting that since this Period the margins of at least four lithospheric plates have remained near the side of the active Sumatran arc.The presence of Permian volcanic and granitic rocks in the Malay Peninsula and West Kalimantan, and the results of the radiometric age determination of granitic rocks from the islands situated in the Sunda Shelf area, point to the existence of other Permian and Cretaceous volcano-plutonic arcs east and north of the arcs previously described in Sumatra and Java. Thus a double volcano-plutonic arc with opposing Benioff zones must have existed during Permian and Cretaceous time in this area.The Schwaner Mountains of West Kalimantan are considered to be the place where volcano-plutonic arcs of different ages have merged together. The correlative subduction zones have to be sought in the so-called Danau Formation of West Kalimantan and the northern part of the Kuching zone, the Sibu zone of Serawak situated north of the Schwaner Mountains.The evolution and complex geology of the western part of Indonesia can only be understood by the supposition of the existence of megaplates and sub-plates generated from spreading centers situated in the Indian Ocean and presumably in the area of the South China Sea, respectively.  相似文献
