Subtropical and extratropical proxy records of wind field, sea level pressure (SLP), temperature and hydrological anomalies from South Africa, Australia/New Zealand, Patagonian South America and Antarctica were used to reconstruct the Indo-Pacific extratropical southern hemisphere sea-level pressure anomaly (SLPa) fields for the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA ~700–1350 CE) and transition to the Little Ice Age (LIA 1350–1450 CE). The multivariate array of proxy data were simultaneously evaluated against global climate model output in order to identify climate state analogues that are most consistent with the majority of proxy data. The mean SLP and SLP anomaly patterns derived from these analogues illustrate the evolution of low frequency changes in the extratropics. The Indo-Pacific extratropical mean climate state was dominated by a strong tropical interaction with Antarctica emanating from: (1) the eastern Indian and south-west Pacific regions prior to 1100 CE, then, (2) the eastern Pacific evolving to the central Pacific La Niña-like pattern interacting with a +ve SAM to 1300 CE. A relatively abrupt shift to –ve SAM and the central Pacific El Niño-like pattern occurred at ~1300. A poleward (equatorward) shift in the subtropical ridge occurred during the MCA (MCA–LIA transition). The Hadley Cell expansion in the Australian and Southwest Pacific, region together with the poleward shift of the zonal westerlies is contemporaneous with previously reported Hadley Cell expansion in the North Pacific and Atlantic regions, and suggests that bipolar climate symmetry was a feature of the MCA. 相似文献

The equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of a coronal loop embedded in a stratified isothermal atmosphere are investigated. The shape of the loop is determined by a balance between magnetic tension, buoyancy, and external pressure gradients. The footpoints of the loop are anchored in the photosphere; if they are moved too far apart, no equilibrium is possible and the loop erupts upwards. This critical separation is independent of the pressure differential between the loop and the external medium if the loop has enhanced magnetic field, but varies if instead the loop pressure is increased. The maximum width is proportional to the larger of the gravitational scale-height and the length-scale of the ambient field. In some circumstances, it is shown that multiple solutions exist for the tube path. These results may be relevant to the eruption of prominences during the preflare phase of two-ribbon flares and to the onset of coronal loop transients. The magnetostatic equilibrium of a coronal loop in response to slow twisting of the photospheric footpoints is investigated. A numerical code is used to solve the full non-linear 2-D axisymmetric problem, extending earlier linearised models which assume weak twist and large aspect ratio. It is found that often the core of the loop tends to contract into a region of strong longitudinal field while the outer part expands. It is shown that, away from the photospheric footpoints, the equilibrium is very well approximated by a straight 1-D cylindrical model. The overall goal of this study was to strengthen understanding of the hydrographic structure in shallow estuaries as influenced by seasonal and depth-dependent variability, and by variability from extreme meteorological events. The mesohaline Neuse Estuary, North Carolina, U.S.A., which was the focus, receives surface inputs from upriver and tributary freshwater sources and bottom inputs from downriver high-salinity sound water sources, resulting in varying degrees of stratification. To assess depth-dependent, estuary-wide changes in salinity, a multiple time series was created using data from four discrete depths (surface and 1, 2, and 3 m±0.25 m). The database was developed from weekly to biweekly sampling of the entire water column, and included side-channel as well as mid-channel data. We characterized seasonal differences in halocline depth affecting the hydrographic structure of the mesohaline estuary and site-specific variation in nutrient concentrations, based on a comprehensive eight-year physical/chemical database. The first two years of the record showed an expected seasonal signal and included events that impacted the surface layer from freshwater inputs. Remaining years had greater variability over seasons and depths, with freshening events that affected all depths. Halocline depth was compared at specific locations, and a “snapshot” view was provided of the relative depth of these water masses within the estuary by season. We also examined flow patterns at the same cross-estuary sites over a three-year period, using a boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with bottom-tracking capability. Composite visualizations constructed with single-transect ADCP data revealed a classical estuarine circulation pattern of outflow at the surface/southern shore and inflow at the bottom/northern shore. Although this pattern deviated under extreme climatological events and was sometimes variable, the estuary generally exhibited a high probability of direction of flow. In this article we consider phenomena on a hierarchy of scales: the broad synoptic-scale flows in mid-latitude depressions, the mesoscale patterns of precipitation, the nature and origin of convection at the surface and aloft, and the microphysical properties of the resulting precipitation.
