Following previous studies on beach and dune sediments from the Espinho–Mondego Cape coastal sector, geochemical studies have been done on the same sediments aiming to unravel the lithological from the anthropogenic geochemical signal. 129 samples have been collected from 45 profiles, in beach and dune sediments. Total Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Cd, Co, Ni, Cr, Ca, Mg and Al concentrations were measured in the fine fractions of the sediments. The absence of relationship between the analysed heavy elements and Al and the exhibition of contents higher than the rocks outcropping in the hinterland, point to an additional source of heavy metals related to human activities. The available data allowed us to consider that inputs from Aveiro lagoon (natural and anthropogenic), Douro River and coastal erosion (by littoral drift or advective currents) are the main sources of heavy metals in this region. 相似文献

Summary. The general problem of inverting Love-wave dispersion and amplitude data to obtain a velocity and Qs structure is considered. A formulation is used which incorporates attenuation into the Haskell-Thompson matrix method in an exact manner and thus retains the inherent non-linearity in the anelasticity. The resulting exact inversion kernels allow simultaneous inversion for velocity and intrinsic attenuation parameters. The method is applied to synthetic data which allows a comparison to be made with inexact kernels. The results indicate that the use of inexact kernels may introduce spurious oscillations into the Qs structure and that a simultaneous inversion can be more stable than inverting for velocity alone. 相似文献

This paper treats analytically the problem of the stability of the attitude motions of a gravity-stabilized gyrostat satellite that is in a circular orbit around a spherical planet. The vehicle considered consists of a body with no special symmetries that has any number of rotors attached to it. The internal angular momentum vector due to these rotors is parallel to one of the principal axes of the entire satellite; this axis is aligned with (or close to) the normal to the orbit plane. Both the cases in which each rotor is driven by a motor at a constant spin rate relative to the main body of the vehicle and the one in which each rotor is rotating freely, without any friction, are treated. Stability (both infinitesimal and in the sense of Liapunov) of the attitude motions of the vehicle can be quickly predicted by using the results derived here, which are summarized in the form of a continuous, three-dimensional, stability diagram.National Research Council Post-Doctoral Research Associate at NASA-Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. Recently (Granato, Lacey, Silva et al., 2000, astro-ph/0001308)we have combined our spectrophotometric galaxy evolution code which includes dust reprocessing (GRASIL, Silva et al., 1998) with semi-analytical galaxy formation models (GALFORM, Cole et al. 1999). One of the most characteristic features of the former is that the dust is divided in two main phases: molecular cloud complexes, where stars are assumed to be born, and the diffuse interstellar medium. As a consequence, stellar populations of different ages have different geometrical relationships with the two phases, which is essential in understanding several observed properties of galaxies, in particular those undergoing major episodes of star formation at any redshift. Indeed, our merged GRASIL+GALFORM model reproduces fairly well the SEDs of normal spirals and starbursts from the far-UV to the sub-mm and their internal extinction properties. In particular in the model the observed starburst attenuation law (Calzetti, 1999) is accounted for as an effect of geometry of stars and dust, and has nothing to do with the optical properties of dust grains. 相似文献

The key to comprehending the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya is to understand the relationships between large-scale faulting, anatexis, and inverted metamorphism. The great number and variety of mechanisms that have been proposed to explain some or all of these features reflects the fact that fundamental constraints on such models have been slow in coming. Recent developments, most notably in geophysical imaging and geochronology, have been key to coalescing the results of varied Himalayan investigations into constraints with which to test proposed evolutionary models. These models fall into four general types: (1) the inverted metamorphic sequences within the footwall of the Himalayan thrust and adjacent hanging wall anatexis are spatially and temporally related by thrusting; (2) thrusting results from anatexis; (3) anatexis results from normal faulting; and (4) apparent inverted metamorphism in the footwall of the Himalayan thrust is produced by underplating of right-way-up metamorphic sequences. We review a number of models and find that many are inconsistent with available constraints, most notably the recognition that the exposed crustal melts and inverted metamorphic sequences not temporally related. The generalization that appears to best explain the observed distribution of crustal melts and inverted metamorphic sequences is that, due to specific petrological and tectonic controls, episodic magmatism and out-of-sequence thrusting developed during continuous convergence juxtaposing allochthonous igneous and metamorphic rocks. This coincidental juxtaposition has proven to be something of a red herring, unduly influencing attention toward finding a causal relationship between anatexis and inverted metamorphism. 相似文献

Loess‐paleosol sequences are important terrestrial archives of palaeoenvironmental change. Such sequences are rich in pedogenic carbonate, the oxygen and carbon isotopic values of which can provide important palaeoenvironmental information. Although some studies have pioneered the use of O and C isotopes in loess‐paleosol sequences, they are not routinely used as palaeoclimate proxies. In this study we analysed the sedimentology, micromorphology, geochronology and isotopic geochemistry of a Middle Pleistocene loess‐paleosol section, located at Kärlich, Germany. The section studied correlates with the Elsterian glacial (MIS 12) and Holsteinian interglacial (MIS 11). Embedded tephra layers yielded 40Ar/39Ar ages of 466±3 ka, 447±1 ka and 361±3 ka. The sedimentology and micromorphology of the sequence record a shift from accretionary loess accumulation (MIS 12) to prolonged pedogenesis at a stable land surface (MIS 11). Soil carbonate δ18O values record an enrichment of ~3‰ during the accumulation of the loess, reaching peak values comparable with those found in the MIS 11 soil. The δ18O signal is interpreted as reflecting temperature, highlighting the potential of δ18O analysis of European loess soil carbonates as a means of reconstructing palaeotemperature history. 相似文献

This study presents the first regional analysis of cirques on Vestfirðir, NW Iceland, using a Geographical Information System (GIS). The length, width, elevation of cirque‐floor, latitude and the distance to the modern coastline (both ocean and fjord coastlines) of cirques were quantified using ArcGIS. The topographical analysis revealed a total of 100 cirques on western and northern Vestfirðir. Several additional cirques are present, but they had poorly defined toewalls, making the cirque‐floor difficult to identify. Mean cirque length is 515 m and mean cirque width is 752 m. The modal orientation of the aspect of cirques is northeast, with a strong secondary mode to the northwest. Cirques at low elevations are more abundant close to the ocean, whereas cirques further from the ocean are present at high elevations. Three techniques were used to reconstruct past equilibrium‐line altitudes (ELAs) of cirque glaciers: the cirque‐floor method, the altitude‐ratio method and the accumulation‐area ratio method. The largest range of past ELAs is generated from the cirque‐floor method with values from 40 up to 730 m. Mean past ELA values range from ~395 to 423 m depending on the method used to reconstruct former ELAs. A strong positive relationship is observed between past ELA values and distance to the ocean demonstrating the importance of access to a moisture source for glacier survival. This relationship is stronger than the relationship between former ELAs and latitude. Based on the small size of cirque glaciers, it is likely that even minor fluctuations in the Irminger Current and the East Greenland Current influence cirque glaciation on Vestfirðir. 相似文献
