We present a detailed analysis of the uncertainty on the theoretical population corrections to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) red clump (RC) absolute magnitude, by employing a population synthesis algorithm to simulate theoretically the photometric and spectroscopic properties of RC stars, under various assumptions concerning the LMC star formation rate (SFR) and age–metallicity relationship (AMR). A comparison of the outcome of our simulations with observations of evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars in the LMC allows one to select the combinations of SFR and AMR that bracket the real LMC star formation history, and to estimate the systematic error on the associated RC population corrections.
The most accurate estimate of the LMC distance modulus from the RC method (adopting the OGLE-II reddening maps for the LMC) is obtained from the K -band magnitude, and provides  ( m − M )0,LMC= 18.47 ± 0.01(random)+0.05−0.06(systematic)  . Distances obtained from the I band, or from the multicolour RC technique which determines at the same time reddening and distance, both agree (albeit with a slightly larger error bar) with this value.  相似文献

The dynamics of mergers of large circulations in Jupiter's atmosphere may permit different models of the atmosphere to be tested. We report well-resolved observations of such events at visible wavelengths: three anticyclonic and three cyclonic events. A merger of anticyclonic white ovals in the South South Temperate domain (2002 March) is compared with the previously reported merger of ovals BE and FA in the South Temperate domain (2000 March). In each case, the two similar-sized ovals converged rapidly once they were separated by less than the sum of their diameters; they orbited around each other anticyclonically during the merger; the merged oval initially had the same rapid drift as the western parent; and, in an unexpected similarity, a cyclonic oval emerged westward from the point of merger. Evidence suggests that a merger of smaller ovals in the North North Temperate domain (2002 February) had similar dynamics. In contrast, mergers of cyclonic ovals in the North Equatorial Belt (‘barges’: 2001 November, 2005 May) proceeded in a different manner. The two parent barges showed no consistent acceleration towards each other as they converged; on contact there was no obvious sign of mutual circulation, and the low-albedo regions had almost passed each other before they finally merged; and the resulting barge had a drift rate intermediate between the two parents, and a length that was greater than either parent. Again, a third such event involving a smaller barge (2002 December) showed many of the same characteristics. These observations define different dynamical behaviour during anticyclonic and cyclonic mergers.  相似文献

The understanding of the high energy γ-ray sky requires a coordinated multi-wavelength strategy. The Large Millimeter Telescope will be the largest and most sensitive single dish antenna operating between 0.8 mm and 3 mm in the foreseeable future. Its first light instrumentation and capabilities are well suited for studies of dust, dense molecular gas and the synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons. The Large Millimeter Telescope, due to enter commissioning and first light science phase in 2007, will be able to complement GLAST observations and help disentangling the nature of the new and old unidentified gamma-ray sources. We have studied the kinematics of the ionized gas in the nearly face-on galaxy NGC 3938 by means of observations made with theFabry–Perot interferometer TAURUS II at the William Herschel Telescope, using the Hα line. We have been able to produce high-resolution velocity and velocity-dispersion maps which allow us to make a detailed study of the kinematics of the ionized gas. In particular we have found that the vertical velocity dispersion is constant with galactocentric radius, as has already been found for the atomic and molecular gas in this galaxy. This suggests the existence of several heating mechanisms in the disc acting simultaneously to produce the observed behaviour. Sheets of salt and ductile shale advancing beyond the thrust front of the Gibraltar Arc (Iberian–Moroccan Atlantic continental margin) triggered downslope movements of huge allochthonous masses. These allochthons represent the Cádiz Nappe, which detached from the Gibraltar Arc along low‐angle normal faults and migrated downslope from the Iberian and Moroccan continental margins towards the Atlantic Ocean. Extensional tectonics initiated upslope salt withdrawal and downslope diapirism during large‐scale westward mass wasting from the shelf and upper slope. Low‐angle salt and shale detachments bound by lateral ramps link extensional structures in the shelf to folding, thrusting and sheets of salt and shale in the Gulf of Cádiz. From backstripping analyses carried out on the depocentres of the growth‐fault‐related basins on the shelf, we infer two episodes of rapid subsidence related to extensional collapses; these were from Late Tortonian to Late Messinian (200–400 m Myr?1) and from Early Pliocene to Late Pliocene (100–150 m Myr?1). The extensional events that induced salt movements also affected basement deformation and were, probably, associated with the westward advance of frontal thrusts of the Gibraltar Arc as a result of the convergence between Africa and Eurasia. The complexities of salt and/or shale tectonics in the Gulf of Cádiz result from a combination of the deformations seen at convergent and passive continental margins.  相似文献

The World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO-UV) is the space mission that will grant access to the ultraviolet (UV) range in the post Hubble epoch. WSO-UV is equipped with instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy and it is fully devoted to UV astronomy. We study heliospheric propagation and some space weather aspects of three Earth-directed interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), successively launched from the active region AR 11158 in the period 13?–?15 February 2011. From the analysis of the ICME kinematics, morphological evolution, and in situ observations, we infer that the three ICMEs interacted on their way to Earth, arriving together at 1 AU as a single interplanetary disturbance. Detailed analysis of the in situ data reveals complex internal structure of the disturbance, where signatures of the three initially independent ICMEs could be recognized. The analysis also reveals compression and heating of the middle ICME, as well as ongoing magnetic reconnection between the leading and the middle ICME. We present evidence showing that the propagation of these two, initially slower ICMEs, was boosted by the fastest, third ICME. Finally, we employ the ground-based cosmic ray observations, to show that this complex disturbance produced a single cosmic ray event, i.e., a simple Forbush decrease (FD). The results presented provide a better understanding of the ICME interactions and reveal effects that should be taken into account in forecasting of the arrival of such compound structures.  相似文献

The first thorough examination of oxygen concentrations in Canadian waters of the Pacific Ocean reveals several patterns in space and time. Sub-surface concentrations of oxygen tend to be lower in shelf waters than in deep-sea waters on the same isopycnal and lower in southern waters of the continental shelf than farther north. The lowest near-bottom concentration was 0.7 ml L?1 (31 μmol kg?1) in mid-shelf waters in summer off southwest Vancouver Island in the Juan de Fuca Eddy region. Oxygen concentration there declined at a rate of 0.019 ml L?1 y?1 (0.83 μmol kg?1 y?1) from 1979 to 2011. This decline is attributed mainly to changes in oxygen concentrations on the same density surfaces, rather than to changes in the depth of constant-density surfaces. A numerical simulation of ocean currents and nutrient concentrations in and surrounding the Juan de Fuca Eddy in summer reveals persistent upwelling into the centre of this eddy and slow bottom currents within the eddy. Upwelled water at bottom of the Juan de Fuca Eddy has water properties associated with the California Undercurrent on the 26.6 sigma-t surface at 200 m depth, where oxygen concentration is typically 2.0 ml L?1 (87 μmol kg?1) and declined at a rate of 0.025 ml L?1 y?1 (1.1 μmol kg?1 y?1) from 1981 to 2011, mainly as a result of changes on constant-density surfaces rather than to uplifting isopycnals. We propose that upwelling advects deep, oxygen-poor water onto the continental shelf bottom, and the slow bottom currents allow time for oxidation of organic material in bottom waters to further reduce the oxygen concentration.

RÉSUMÉ?[Traduit par la rédaction] Le premier examen approfondi des concentrations d'oxygène dans les eaux canadiennes de l'océan Pacifique révèle plusieurs configurations dans le temps et dans l'espace. Les concentrations d'oxygène sous la surface ont tendance à être plus faibles dans les eaux de la plate-forme continentale que dans les eaux de l'océan profond sur la même isopycne et plus faibles dans les eaux du sud de la plate-forme que plus loin au nord. La concentration la plus faible près du fond était de 0.7 ml L?1 (31 μmol kg?1) dans les eaux du milieu de la plate-forme en été au large du sud-ouest de l’île de Vancouver dans la région du remous de Juan de Fuca. Les concentrations en oxygène à cet endroit ont diminué au rythme de 0.019 ml L?1 a?1 (0.83 μmol kg?1 a?1) entre 1979 et 2011. Cette diminution est principalement attribuée aux changements dans les concentrations d'oxygène sur les surfaces d’égale densité plutôt qu'aux changements dans la profondeur des surfaces de densité constante. The authors present a novel self-organized climate regionalization (CR) method that obtains a spatial clustering of regions, based on the explained variance of physical measurements in their coverage. This method enables a microscopic characterization of the probabilistic spatial extent of climate regions, using the statistics of the obtained clusters. It also allows for the study of the macroscopic behaviour of climate regions through time by using the dissimilarity among different cluster size probability histograms. The main advantages of the presented method, based on the Second-Order Data-Coupled Clustering (SODCC) algorithm, are that SODCC is robust to the selection of tunable parameters and that it does not require a regular or homogeneous grid to be applied. Moreover, the SODCC method has higher spatial resolution, lower computational complexity, and allows for a more direct physical interpretation of the outputs than other existing CR methods, such as Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) or Rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function (REOF). These facts are illustrated with an example of winter wind speed regionalization in the Iberian Peninsula through the period (1979 − 2014). This study also reveals that the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has a high influence over the wind distribution in the Iberian Peninsula in a subset of years in the considered period.  相似文献
