Trace gas measurements during aircraft flights in the tropopause region over Europe and North Africa

During aircraft flights in May 1981 from Munich (40°N) to north of the Spitsbergen Islands (82°N) and to Monrovia, Liberia (6°N), air samples were obtained in the altitude range of 8 to 11 km and during the ascents and descents near the airports. These samples have been analyzed for the trace gas mixing ratios of CH4, CO and N2O. The results of these analyses are presented and discussed.The results provide new evidence of tropospheric-stratospheric exchange events in the vicinity of the subpolar and subtropical tropopause foldings and possibly show a case of transport of CO-enriched air in the upper troposphere above the North Atlantic Ocean. 相似文献

This paper describes how measurements of the movement of identifiable features at the edge of a turbulent plume can be interpreted to determine the properties of the mean flow and consequently, using plume theory, can be used to make estimates of the fluxes of volume (mass), momentum, and buoyancy in a plume. This means that video recordings of smoke rising from a chimney or buoyant material from a source on the sea bed can be used to make accurate estimates of the source conditions for the plume. At best we can estimate the volume flux and buoyancy flux to within about 5% and 15% of the actual values, respectively. Although this is restricted to the case of a plume rising in a stationary and unstratified environment, we show that the results may be of practical use in other more complex situations. In addition, we demonstrate that large-scale (turbulent) coherent structures at the plume edge form on a scale approximately 40% of the local (mean) plume half-width and travel at almost 60% of the average local (mean) velocity in the plume. 相似文献

Determination of biosphere–atmosphere exchanges requires accurate quantification of the turbulent fluxes of energy and of
a wide variety of trace gases. Relaxed Eddy Accumulation (REA) is a method that has received increasing attention in recent
years, because it does not require any rapid sensor for the scalar measurements as the Eddy Correlation method (EC) does.
As in all micrometeorological studies, REA measurements in the atmospheric surface layer are valid under some restrictive
conditions so as to be representative of a specific ecosystem. These conditions are the homogeneity of the underlying surface,
stationary and horizontally homogeneous turbulence. For most experiments these conditions are not fully satisfied. Data uncertainties
can also be related to not fulfilling the method principles or to the technical characteristics of the REA system itself.
In order to assess REA measurement quality, a methodological approach of data analysis is developed in this study. This methodological
analysis is based on the establishment of criteria for data quality control. A set of them, deduced from the mean and turbulent
flow, are called ‘Dynamic criteria’ and are designated to control the stationarity and homogeneity of the w function and the validation of Taylor’s hypothesis. A second set (‘REA operational criteria’) is designed to check the sampling
process and, more precisely, the homogeneity of the negative and positive selection process throughout the sampling period.
A third set of criteria (‘Chemical scalar criteria’) concerns the scalar measurements. Results of the criteria application
to data measured at two different experimental sites are also presented. Cut-off limits of criteria are defined based on their
statistical distribution and shown to be specific for each site. Strictness of each criterion, defined by the percentage of
flagged samples, is analysed in conjunction with the meteorological conditions and atmospheric stability. It is found that
flagged samples mainly correspond to neutral and stable nocturnal conditions. During daytime, nearly free convection conditions

Aircraft and ground-based measurements made during the1995 Australian OASIS field campaign are compared. The aircraft data were recorded during low-level flightsat 6 m above ground level and grid flights at altitudes of between 15 and 65 m, allin unstable atmospheric conditions. The low-level flights revealed an inadequate temperaturesensor response time, a correction for which was determined from subsequent work ina wind tunnel. Aircraft and ground-based measurements of mean wind speed, wind directionand air temperature agree to within 0.2 m s-1, 4° and 0.9 °C respectively.Comparisons between aircraft and ground-based observations of the standarddeviations of vertical velocity, horizontal wind speed, air temperature and specifichumidity have slopes of 0.96, 0.97, 0.92 and 0.99 respectively but the observed scatter isroughly twice the random error expected due to the averaging length of the aircraft data andthe averaging period of the ground-based data. For the low-level flights, the ground-basedand aircraft measurements of sensible and latent heat flux show mean differences of 27 and-25 W m-2 respectively, which reduce to 11 and -4 W m-2 respectivelywhen analysis of aircraft data is limited to areas immediately adjacent to the fluxtowers. For the flights at 15 to 65 m above ground level, the mean differences between theground-based and aircraft measurements of sensible and latent heat flux are -22 and-1 W m-2 respectively and these change to -1 and -7 W m-2 respectively oncethe effect of surface heterogeneity is included. Aircraft and ground-based measurementsof net radiation agree to within 6% at one ground-based site but differ by 20% at a second.Aircraft measurements of friction velocity at 6 m above the ground agree well withground-based data, but those from flights between 15 and 65 m above ground level do not.This is because at these heights the aircraft measurements provide the local shear stress,not the surface shear stress. Overall, the level of agreement allows confidence in the aircraftdata provided due care is taken of instrument response times and differences in thesurfaces sampled by aircraft and ground-based systems. 相似文献

Within the framework of the PMIP (Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project), we have compared mid-Holocene climate
simulations from 16 atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs) with new pollen-based reconstructions of the European bioclimatic
variables for winter and growing season temperatures as well as annual water budget changes. In winter, some models are able
to simulate the reconstructed northeastern warming, due to an increased heat transport from the ocean, associated with a larger
north-south pressure gradient over the northern Atlantic. Whereas most models are only able to simulate a strong summer warming,
data indicate a shorter and/ or colder growing season in southern Europe and a longer and/or warmer growing season in northwestern
Europe. The reconstructed change in annual water budget indicates drier conditions in northwestern Europe and wetter conditions
in southern Europe. Some models simulate such moisture changes, due to more summer evaporation over Scandinavia during summer,
and more autumn-winter-spring precipitation over southern Europe. To address the PMIP approximation of no change in ocean
and land boundary conditions, we have performed short sensitivity experiments to surface boundary conditions (sea-surface-temperatures,
vegetation) using one single model. The model-data disagreements over Europe are probably due to the local influence of the
surrounding oceans which are not taken into account in the first PMIP simulations. We therefore stress the need for more mid-Holocene
SST reconstructions and further analysis of pollen data in the Mediterranean region.

Energy-intensive industries play an important role in low-carbon development, being particularly exposed to climate policies. Concern over possible carbon leakage in this sector poses a major challenge for designing effective carbon pricing instruments (CPI). Different methodologies for assessing carbon leakage exposure are currently used by different jurisdictions, each of them based on different approaches and indicators. This paper aims to analyse the extent to which the use of different methodologies leads to different results in terms of exposure to the risk of carbon leakage, using the Brazilian industry sector as a case study. Results indicate that carbon leakage exposure is an expected outcome of eventual CPI implementation in Brazilian industry. However, results vary according to the chosen methodology, so the definition of the criteria is paramount for assessing sectoral exposure to the risk of carbon leakage.
Key policy insights
Despite increasing discussion about the implementation of carbon pricing on the Brazilian industrial sector, the evaluation of carbon leakage risks is still neglected.
Assessments of the risk of carbon leakage are directly related to the indicators and criteria used by each methodology. Thus, a given subsector may present different levels of exposure to carbon leakage depending on the methodological choice.
More than a purely technical discussion, the methodological definition of carbon leakage risk is a political discussion – it can be well-conducted, leading to the success of a CPI, or even sabotaged, by implicitly subsidizing energy-intensive industries.

Summary Recent studies imply that significant climatic changes over the central and southern coastal plain in Israel may be due to
changes in land usage, which have taken place since the National Water Carrier operation in the early 1960’s. Such changes
are reflected in the spatial distribution of the surface albedo pattern, obviously resulting in changes in the surface radiation
balance and, subsequently, modifying the surface heat fluxes and the stability conditions of the Planetary Boundary Layer
(PBL).
An Eppley PSP Pyranometer facing downward was mounted on a small Cessna aircraft and flown along the coastal plain from Tel
Aviv to the northern Negev south of Beer Sheva, at an altitude of approximately 500 feet, measuring surface reflection. The
incoming solar radiation was measured simultaneously, at several surface radiation stations of the Israel Meteorological Service,
along the flight path. The results show large differences in surface reflection distributions, between the cultivated areas
in southern Israel (as low as 0.15), and the adjacent arid regions (with values of up to 0.35). Historical albedo maps were
reconstructed according to land utilization maps of the 1930’s and the 1960’s. A comparison between recent albedo map and
the reconstructed maps, indicates temporal changes in the surface albedo pattern during the last decades.

The parameterization of the stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer is a difficult issue, having a significant impact on medium-range weather forecasts and climate integrations. To pursue this further, a moderately stratified Arctic case is simulated by nineteen single-column turbulence schemes. Statistics from a large-eddy simulation intercomparison made for the same case by eleven different models are used as a guiding reference. The single-column parameterizations include research and operational schemes from major forecast and climate research centres. Results from first-order schemes, a large number of turbulence kinetic energy closures, and other models were used. There is a large spread in the results; in general, the operational schemes mix over a deeper layer than the research schemes, and the turbulence kinetic energy and other higher-order closures give results closer to the statistics obtained from the large-eddy simulations. The sensitivities of the schemes to the parameters of their turbulence closures are partially explored. 相似文献
