From September 2000 to December 2006, surface plankton samples were collected on a monthly basis, from a station located in the southern Bay of Biscay (43°37N; 1°43W France), near the deep Capbreton canyon. In this paper, the results for the ichthyoplankton assemblage are presented. Among the 62 taxa recorded, only 35 were present in the larval stage whilst only 10 were represented by their eggs. Taxa represented by both stages (eggs+larvae; N=17) had the highest abundance. The presence in the surface plankton assemblage of species, at either or both stage, is interpreted within the context of the bathymetric distribution of species. The maxima in abundance and diversity occurred in February–March, for eggs, and May–June, for larvae. This 3-month time-lag between the stages is proposed to be related to the timing of egg spawning and larval recruitment to the pelagic environment. Mean egg abundances (82.4±29.8 eggs/10 m2) were 10-fold higher than the larval abundances (7.1±1.8 larvae/10 m2). Despite pronounced monthly variability, no statistically significant decrease in either egg or larvae abundance was observed during this 6-year study period. Compared with previous published studies, this study shows that the peak in ichthyoplankton diversity occurred two months earlier. In addition, the spawning period occurred over the whole year, even during autumn and winter. Using ordination techniques, the annual sequence appearance of taxa are described at the study site: Gadiforms, Ammodytidae and Pleuronectiforms were present during the winter whilst Sparidae, Blennidae, Labridae and Gobiidae, formed the summer group. Only three species, European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, European pilchard Sardina pilchardus and Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus were recorded throughout the year.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of the definition studies performed for the European Space Agency (ESA) on system architectures and enabling technologies for “BepiColombo”, a Cornerstone class mission to be launched in the 2007–2009 time frame. The scientific mission comprises 1-year observations by a Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO), dedicated to remote sensing, and a Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), dedicated to particles and fields, plus short-duration in situ analysis by a Mercury surface element (MSE). A flexible approach to the programme has been developed, comprising two alternative launch scenarios. In the first option (2009), the 2500-kg class satellite composite, including two propulsion modules and three scientific modules, is launched by an Ariane-5. The trajectory design is based on Venus and Mercury gravity assists plus the thrust provided by a Solar Electric Propulsion Module (SEPM), that is jettisoned before being captured into Mercury orbit. Capture and orbit insertion, executed by successive manoeuvres of a Chemical Propulsion Module (CPM), occur less than 2.5 yr after launch. In the second scenario, the mission is split into two launches of a small launch vehicle. Two 1200-kg class composites are launched either in the same one-month window or at an interval of 1.6 yr. One composite comprises the SEPM, CPM, MMO and MSE and the other comprises duplicate SEPM+CPM and the MPO. The trajectory design follows the same principles as the Ariane-5 mission, with the SEPM thrust reduced by half and cruise duration ranging between 2.3 and 3.5 yr. Whatever be the implementation, the mission is expected to return about 1700 Gbit of scientific data during the one-year observation phase. The crucial aspects of the spacecraft design are associated with, and constrained by, the high-temperature and high-radiation environment. Basic feasibility has been demonstrated by an extensive design and analysis exercise, and the focus of the programme has now moved to a 3-year preparatory programme dedicated for developing the enabling technologies.  相似文献

A simplified process-based approach for evaluating onshore sandbar migration is presented in this study. This approach takes wave-averaged parameters as input and computes sediment transport processes using a reconstructed intra-wave orbital velocity signal. The proposed method guarantees good predictive skills for multiple onshore sandbar migration cases without an ad hoc calibration for each scenario. The study differs from previous onshore sandbar migration models, where calibration and testing are performed on just one or few events, and model assessment for uncalibrated realizations is rarely carried out. The present version of the model only addresses onshore sandbar migrations. For the onshore migration cases analyzed, the model has better predictive skills than state-of-the-art morphodynamic models (XBeach and Unibest-TC).  相似文献

In this article, the processing steps applied to the raw GOCE science payload instrument data (level 0) in order to obtain input data for the gravity field determination (level 1b) are described. The raw gradiometer measurements, which are given at the level of control voltages, have to be transformed into accelerations and gradients. For the latter step, knowledge about the GOCE attitude is required, which is provided by the star trackers. In addition, the data of the satellite to satellite tracking instrument are used to date the measurements, after its clock error has been corrected. All intermediate steps of the processing flow are described. Together with the explanation of the processing flow, an overview of the main level 1b products is given. The final part of the article discusses the means of quality control of the L1b data currently used and gives an outlook on potential processor evolutions.  相似文献

In most regions of the world overgrazing plays a major role in land degradation and thus creates a major threat to natural ecosystems. Several feedbacks exist between overgrazing, vegetation, soil infiltration by water and soil erosion that need to be better understood. In this study of a sub‐humid overgrazed rangeland in South Africa, the main objective was to evaluate the impact of grass cover on soil infiltration by water and soil detachment. Artificial rains of 30 and 60 mm h?1 were applied for 30 min on 1 m2 micro‐plots showing similar sandy‐loam Acrisols with different proportions of soil surface coverage by grass (Class A: 75–100%; B: 75–50%; C: 50–25%; D: 25–5%; E: 5–0% with an outcropping A horizon; F: 0% with an outcropping B horizon) to evaluate pre‐runoff rainfall (Pr), steady state water infiltration (I), sediment concentration (SC) and soil losses (SL). Whatever the class of vegetal cover and the rainfall intensity, with the exception of two plots probably affected by biological activity, I decreased regularly to a steady rate <2 mm h?1 after 15 min rain. There was no significant correlation between I and Pr with vegetal cover. The average SC computed from the two rains increased from 0·16 g L?1 (class A) to 48·5 g L?1 (class F) while SL was varied between 4 g m?2 h?1 for A and 1883 g m?2 h?1 for F. SL increased significantly with decreasing vegetal cover with an exponential increase while the removal of the A horizon increased SC and SL by a factor of 4. The results support the belief that soil vegetation cover and overgrazing plays a major role in soil infiltration by water but also suggest that the interrill erosion process is self‐increasing. Abandoned cultivated lands and animal preferred pathways are more vulnerable to erosive processes than simply overgrazed rangelands. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We examined Cu contamination effects on macrobenthic communities and Cu concentration in invertebrates within Shelter Island Yacht Basin, San Diego Bay, California. Results indicate that at some sites, Cu in sediment has exceeded a threshold for “self defense” mechanisms and highlight the potential negative impacts on benthic faunal communities where Cu accumulates and persists in sediments. At sites with elevated Cu levels in sediment, macrobenthic communities were not only less diverse but also their total biomass and body size (individual biomass) were reduced compared to sites with lower Cu. Cu concentration in tissue varied between species and within the same species, reflecting differing abilities to “regulate” their body load. The spatial complexity of Cu effects in a small marina such as SIYB emphasizes that sediment-quality criteria based solely on laboratory experiments should be used with caution, as they do not necessarily reflect the condition at the community and ecosystem levels.  相似文献
