Data regarding the frequency andoccurrence of sea storms in the Adriatic Sea and theWestern Mediterranean during the last millennium havebeen extracted from historical written sources. TheAdriatic Sea shows two anomalous periods of high stormfrequency: the first half of the 1500s and the secondhalf of the 1700s. In the 1500s the storms were morefrequent in autumn, while in the late 1700s theyoccurred at high frequency in winter. In the WesternMediterranean, storms had a higher frequency in thefirst half of the 1600s, with two lesser periods ofhigh frequency in the 1400s and at the end of the1700s. Although both records show a maximum frequencyof sea storms during the Spörer Minimum(1416–1534) of solar activity, sunspot series yieldno, or poor, correlation during the other periods oflowest activity, i.e., Oort Minimum (1010–1090), WolfMinimum (1282–1342), and Maunder Minimum (1645–1715),suggesting that a teleconnection between sea stormsand sunspots is improbable or masked in this region.No teleconnection was found either between the ElNiño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and surgesflooding Venice or the Western Mediterranean storms orbetween Venice surges and the Northern AtlanticOscillation (NAO).  相似文献

Sedimentary features, mineralogy, bulk geochemical composition, stable isotope analyses and pollen data from sediment cores were used to reconstruct the Late Quaternary depositional evolution of the Salada Mediana playa lake (central Ebro Basin, northeastern Spain). The 150-cm-long sediment core sequence is composed of gypsum- and dolomite-rich muds (Lower and Middle sections) and black, laminated, calcite-bearing sediments (Upper section). The Salada Mediana formed as a karstic depression in the Miocene gypsum substratum during the Late Pleistocene. The Lower section was deposited in a sulphate–carbonate saline lake that ended with a period of desiccation and basin floor deflation. Subsequent deposition (Middle section) took place in a playa-lake system. Two cycles of lower water table and expanded saline mud flats occurred. The Holocene sequence is missing, probably as a result of aeolian erosion. Sedimentation resumed only a few centuries ago, and saline pan environments dominated until modern times. The Salada Mediana facies succession was mainly governed by fluctuations in the hydrological balance, brine composition, and salinity; however, aeolian processes (detrital input and deflation) and recycling of previously precipitated salts also played a significant role.  相似文献

Analysis of the conodont colour alteration index and the Kübler index of illite allowed us the characterization of four types of very low‐ or low‐grade metamorphism in the Cantabrian Zone (CZ) and determination of their regional and temporal distribution. These types are: (1) an orogenic Variscan metamorphism present only in restricted areas of the western and north‐western parts of the CZ where epizonal conditions are reached; (2) a burial metamorphism that appears in the basal part of some nappes, where anchizonal conditions are sometimes achieved; the thermal peak preceded emplacement of the nappes; (3) a late‐Variscan metamorphism in the southern and south‐eastern parts of the CZ; a cleavage, cutting most of the Variscan folds, is associated with this metamorphism, which has been related to an extensional episode; (4) a contact metamorphism and hydrothermal activity associated with minor intrusive bodies. The extension continued after the Variscan deformation giving rise to hydrothermal activity during Permian times.  相似文献

A fluid inclusion and stable isotopic study has been undertaken on some massive sulphide deposits (Aguas Teñidas Este, Concepción, San Miguel, San Telmo and Cueva de la Mora) located in the northern Iberian Pyrite Belt. The isotopic analyses were mainly performed on quartz, chlorite, carbonate and whole rock samples from the stockworks and altered footwall zones of the deposits, and also on some fluid inclusion waters. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in quartz mostly range from 120 to 280 °C. Salinity of most fluid inclusions ranges from 2 to 14 wt% NaCl equiv. A few cases with T h=80–110 °C and salinity of 16–24 wt% NaCl equiv., have been also recognized. In addition, fluid inclusions from the Soloviejo Mn–Fe-jaspers (160–190 °C and ˜6 wt% NaCl equiv.) and some Late to Post-Hercynian quartz veins (130–270 °C and ˜4 wt% NaCl equiv.) were also studied. Isotopic results indicate that fluids in equilibrium with measured quartz (d 18O fluid ˜–2 to 4‰), chlorites (d 18O fluid ˜8–14‰, dD fluid ˜–45 to –27‰), whole rocks (d 18O fluid ˜4–7‰, dD fluid ˜–15 to –10‰), and carbonates (d 18O ankerite ˜14.5–16‰, d 13C fluid =–11 to –5‰) evolved isotopically during the lifetime of the hydrothermal systems, following a waxing/waning cycle at different temperatures and water/rock ratios. The results (fluid inclusions, d 18O, dD and d 13C values) point to a highly evolved seawater, along with a variable (but significant) contribution of other fluid reservoirs such as magmatic and/or deep metamorphic waters, as the most probable sources for the ore-forming fluids. These fluids interacted with the underlying volcanic and sedimentary rocks during convective circulation through the upper crust.  相似文献

We reanalyzed a model introduced by T. R. Madden for the evaluation of the state of connectivity among the microcrack population existing inside crystalline rocks. The model assumes that cracks are distributed randomly in a cubic lattice with a basic occupation probability, p.Depending on the value of p, the stale of connectivity can give rise to macroscopic paths, which allow electrical conduction of the sample, or to extended crack surfaces, which would be responsible for rock failure. The position of the phase boundaries, that is, the threshold values of pfor the onset of conductivity or macroscopic fracture, are estimated by a real-space renormalizalion-group (RG) technique. By identifying all the relevant configurations of the lattice model, we have been able to provide explicit analytic formulae for the critical lines. The criterion used by Madden to accept the existence of microscopic linear connectivity is modified and the new consequences discussed. We analyze the limitations of simple versions of the RG technique, in particular when concerned with anisotropic spatial distributions of cracks. Finally, we emphasize the interest of acquiring experimental data, especially to test the position of the conduction thresholds.  相似文献

Although seawater desalination has increased significantly over recent decades, little attention has been paid to the impact of the main by-product (hypersaline water: brine) on ecosystems. In the Mediterranean, potentially the most affected ecosystems are meadows of the endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica. We studied the effect of brine on a shallow P. oceanica meadow exposed to reverse osmosis brine discharge for more than 6 years. P. oceanica proved to be very sensitive to both eutrophication and high salinities derived from the brine discharge. Affected plants showed high epiphyte load and nitrogen content in the leaves, high frequencies of necrosis marks, low total non-structural carbohydrates and low glutamine synthetase activity, compared to control plants. However, there was no indication of extensive decline of the affected meadow. This is probably due to its very shallow situation, which results in high incident radiation as well as fast dilution and dispersion of the brine plume.  相似文献

This study presents a detailed discrimination between the natural and anthropogenic sources of dissolved major elements in the Têt River, a typical small coastal river in the south of France. The main objectives were to quantify the materials that were released by human activities in the basin, and to determine the specific element inputs for the major land use forms. The dissolved material fluxes were estimated by weekly monitoring over a hydrological year (2000–2001) along the major water gauging stations, and the flux relationships were examined in the context of anthropogenic and natural basin characteristics as determined by a Geographical Information System (GIS). Intensive agricultural land use in the form of fruit tree cultures and vineyards has a strong control on the dissolved element fluxes in the river. Area specific element releases for these cultures are greatest for SO4, with an estimated average of about 430 ± 18 keq km−2 a−1. This is ?11 times the natural SO4 release by rock weathering. Also for K, NO3, PO4 and Mg, the specific releases were ?6 times the natural weathering rates (respectively about 44, 60, 4 and 265 keq km−2 a−1). Waste-waters are the other major source of anthropogenic elements in the river. They have an important role for the fluxes of inorganic P and N, but they are also a considerable source of Cl and Na to the river. For example, the average annual release of Cl is around 150 moles/inhabitant in the rural basin parts. Further downstream, however, where population density strongly increases, industrial effluents can enhance this value (>300 moles/inhabitant). The waste-waters contribute more than 70% of the dissolved inorganic N export to the sea, although their contribution to the average DOC export is almost negligible (3%).  相似文献

The present study reports on perturbations of the water column by large rainfall at Lake Alchichica, a saline lake in Central Mexico. Alchichica is located in the “Llanos de San Juan,” a high-altitude plateau with a minimum elevation of 2,300 m above sea level. The climate is arid with annual precipitation less than 400 mm and annual evaporation of 500–600 mm. A single day large rainfall event delivered 1,810,000 m3 of water to the basin, raising the lake’s water level by about 1 m. Temperature and salinity profiles showed an atypical temperature inversion up to 1°C in the upper layer accompanied by salinity decrease up to 0.5 g l−1. Transparency and pH were slightly altered, but dissolved oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations were not changed. In spite of the heavy rainfall and associated wind, the effects of the event were limited to the upper half of the epilimnion. After 2 days, the lake water level returned to its original level. The rapid leakage of the runoff minimized any long-term effects of the large rainfall.  相似文献
