The medium-level radioactive waste deposited in the Asse 2 salt mine, Germany, has a total activity of 1.2 × 1015 Bq (1 January 2002). The waste lies in a former mining chamber on the −511 m mining level close to the contact between the
Mesozoic country rock and the Zechstein salt dome. The Mesozoic country rock is strongly faulted but the geometry of the fault
pattern is incompletely known. Two tectonic cases are considered: a pessimistic case, which assumes that the radioactive source
is linked to the surface by a single fault, and an optimistic case, which assumes that the radioactive source is not connected
to any fault at all. The potential groundwater contamination by radioactive fluids expelled from the cavity is simulated with
the TOUGH2 code for periods of up to 6,000 years, when the potential contamination reaches its greatest vertical extent. Two
types of driving forces are considered: convergence of the rock salt surrounding the cavity and generation of H2 gas by the corrosion of iron, steel and other metallic components of the waste at low O2 fugacities. Rock-salt creep has the greatest potential impact, as it leads to a radioactive plume whose 1 Bq/L activity contour
rises up to 240 m below the surface in the pessimistic tectonic case. The value of the model for the assessment of the environmental
risk is limited. The knowledge of the hydrogeological situation is incomplete and the pessimistic tectonic case may not be

Mining of copper and other metals to a lesser extent is the mainstay of the Zambian economy. Copper is mined in the Copperbelt situated in the northern part of the country. It is not only the the most thickly populated part of the country but also the most urbanized. Urban centers developed with the mines as their nuclei and hence pose spatial problems between the needs of a rapidly increasing population on the one hand and the requirements of the mining industry on the other. The provision of raw material for the extractive industries is a geological one. Economic history shows the realization of these potentials and thirdly, lack of planning has permitted exploitation of minerals and dumping of wastes without much regard to reclamation. Spoilation of land by mining activity is mainly caused by the methods of mining as well as by the dumping of the solid and liquid wastes from the ore crushers and concentrators; while air pollution from sulphurdioxide and dust is from the smelters. Legislation has recently being enacted to regulate the dumping of wastes and for the reclamation of waste dumps. However, this has had only a minimal effect on the problem as yet. The soil from a dump which is ready for reclamation is analysed and methods of revegetating such a dump based on ecological principles is attempted. Finally, the conflict for land between the needs of a growing urban population and the requirements of the mining industry is discussed taking Kitwe, the capital of the Copperbelt as an example. 相似文献

In the urbanizing world,the Yangtze Delta Region (YDR) as one of the most developed regions in China,has drawn a lot of the world’s attention for the remarkable economic development achieved in the past decades.Nevertheless,the rapid economic development was certain to be accompanied by unprecedented consumption and loss of natural resources.Therefore,the analysis of the ecological situation and driving factors of environmental impact was of great significance to serve the local sustainable development decision-making and build a harmonious society.In this paper,the ecological footprint (EF) was taken as the index of the ecological environmental impact.With the help of Geographic Information System (GIS),we studied the spatiotemporal change of ecological footprint at two scales (region and city) and assessed urban sustainable development ability in YDR.Then we discussed the driving factors that affected the change of ecological footprint by the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population,Affluence,and Technology (STIRPAT) model.The results showed that increasing trends of regional ecological footprint during 1998-2008 (1.70-2.53 ha/cap) were accompanied by decreasing ecological capacity (0.31-0.25 ha/cap) but expanding ecological deficit (1.39-2.28 ha/cap).The distribution pattern of ecological footprint and the degree of sustainable development varied distinctly from city to city in YDR.In 2008,the highest values of ecological footprint (3.85 ha/cap) and the lowest one of sustainable development index (SDI=1) in YDR were both presented in Shanghai.GDP per capita (A) was the most dominant driving force of EF and the classical EKC hypothesis did not exist between A and EF in 1998-2008.Consequently,increasing in ecological supply and reducing in human demand due to technological advances or other factors were one of the most effective ways to promote sustainable development in YDR.Moreover,importance should be attached to change our definition and measurement of prosperity and success. 相似文献

Sea floor rhyolites from the Iberian Pyrite Belt show strong enrichment in potassium and adularia is observed to replace plagioclase. This process is in accord with thermodynamic data for the exchange reaction with ocean water which favours adularia up to about 140° C. Archaean felsic intrusives and extrusives exhibit sodium enrichment, a contrast which we attribute to lower K levels in sea water and, or, higher ocean temperatures. All of these rocks show 18O enrichment of + 6 to + 8, in compliance with low temperature sea water exchange. 相似文献

The Sitno Natura 2000 Site covers an area of 935,56 hectares. The Sitno region is significant due to the number of rare and endangered species of plants, and as a result is considered a location of great importance to the maintenance of floral gene pools. The study area suffers human impacts in the form of tourism. The main purpose of this study is to the measure landscape elements, determine the ecological significance of habitats within the Sitno area, and from this data, organize the study area into conservation zones. The results of this landscape quantification are numerical values that can be used to interpret the quality of ongoing ecological processes within individual landscape types. Interpretation of this quantified data can be used to determine the ecological significance of landscapes in other study areas. This research examines the habitats of Natura 2000 Sites by a set of landscape metrics for habitat area, size, density, and shape, such as Number of patches (NP), Patch density (PD), Mean patch size (MPS), Patch size standard deviation (PSSD) and Mean shape index (MSI). Wetland plant communities in the plateau lakes of Yunnan Province, China, have decreased significantly over the past decades. To better understand this degradation, we analyzed the processes and characteristics of changes in wetland plant communities in two of the largest lakes in Yunnan Province, Dianchi and Erhai lakes. We collected records of native and alien plant communities in the two lakes from literature published from the 1950s to current period. We calculated plant community types and their area in some historical periods when related data were reported, and analyzed the relationship between changes in plant communities and water pollution. In Dianchi Lake, 12 community types of native plant communities, covering over 80% of the surface in the 1950s and 1960s, were reduced to four types covering 2.4% by the late 2000s. Alien plant communities started to appear in the lake in the late 1970s, and have since come to cover 4.9% of the lake surface, thereby becoming dominant. In Erhai Lake, 16 community types of native plant communities, covering 47.1% of the lake surface in the late 1970s, declined to 10 community types, covering 9.3% of the surface, by the late 2000s. Alien plant communities appeared in the middle 1980s, and at present cover 0.7% of the surface area. It was indicated that changes in plant communities were significant related to water eutrophication. The area occupied by native and alien plant communities was, respectively, negatively and positively related to the content of nutrients in water. We isolated 4 Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) contaminated oysters from 33 Chinese oysters collected from local commer-cial sources of Shandong Province. After amplification of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) region of NLVs genomes with RT-PCR, the open reading frame 1 (ORF1) of the RdRp was sequenced and subjected to multiple-sequence alignment. The re-suits showed that NLVs in the four isolates belong to genogroup Ⅱ. The sequence comparison showed that the similarity between four Chinese oyster isolates were higher than 99.0%, which indicated that NLVs prevalent in close areas have high homogeneity in genome sequences. In addition, the most conserved sequences between diverse NLVs were used to design primers and TaqMan probes, then the real-time quantitative PCR assay was performed. According to the standard curve of GII NLVs, the original amounts (copies) of NLVs in positive patient's fecal isolate, positive Japanese oyster isolate, and the Chinese oyster isolate were 8.9×108, 1.25×108 and 4.7×101 respectively. The detecting limit of NLVs was 1×101 copies. This study will be helpful for routine diagnosis of NLVs pathogens in foods and thus for avoiding food poisoning in the future. 相似文献

Magnetotelluric investigations have been carried out in the Garhwal Himalayan corridor to delineate the electrical structure
of the crust along a profile extending from Indo-Gangetic Plain to Higher Himalayan region in Uttarakhand, India. The profile
passing through major Himalayan thrusts: Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFF), Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Central Thrust
(MCT), is nearly perpendicular to the regional geological strike. Data processing and impedance analysis indicate that out
of 44 stations MT data recorded, only 27 stations data show in general, the validity of 2D assumption. The average geoelectric
strike, N70°W, was estimated for the profile using tensor decomposition. 2D smooth geoelectrical model has been presented,
which provides the electrical image of the shallow and deeper crustal structure. The major features of the model are (i) a low resistivity (<50Ωm), shallow feature interpreted as sediments of Siwalik and Indo-Gangetic Plain, (ii) highly resistive (> 1000Ωm) zone below the sediments at a depth of 6 km, interpreted as the top surface of the Indian plate,
(iii) a low resistivity (< 10Ωm) below the depth of 6 km near MCT zone coincides with the intense micro-seismic activity in the
region. The zone is interpreted as the partial melting or fluid phase at mid crustal depth. Sensitivity test indicates that
the major features of the geoelectrical model are relevant and desired by the MT data. 相似文献

Petrographic and geochemical features of a suite of eclogite xenoliths from the Rietfontein kimberlite that erupted through
probable Proterozoic crust west of the Kaapvaal Craton in the far Northern Cape region of South Africa, are described. Group
II eclogites dominate the suite both texturally and chemically, but can be subdivided into bimineralic, opx-bearing and kyanite-bearing
groups. Temperature estimates from different geothermometers range from 700 to 1,000°C, indicating derivation from relatively
shallow mantle depths. Orthopyroxene-bearing eclogites are inferred to originate from depths of 85 to 115 km and lie close
to the average cratonic thermal profile for southern Africa. These uppermost mantle temperatures during the late Cretaceous
provide evidence for equilibration of the off-craton lithosphere to craton-like thermal conditions following Namaqua-Natal
orogenesis. The kyanite eclogites are distinct from the remaining eclogites in terms of both major and trace element compositions
and their lesser degree of alteration. Garnets are richer in Ca, and are Cr-depleted relative to garnets from the bimineralic
and opx-bearing eclogites, which tend to be more magnesian. Clinopyroxenes from the kyanite eclogites are more sodic, with
higher Al2O3 and lower MgO contents than the bimineralic and opx-bearing eclogites. LREE-depletion, positive Sr and Eu anomalies, and
the Al-rich, Si-poor bulk composition suggest a plagioclase-rich, probably troctolitic protolith for the kyanite eclogites.
In contrast, the major and trace element bulk compositions of the high-MgO bimineralic and orthopyroxene-bearing eclogites
are consistent with gabbroic or pyroxenitic precursors, or high-pressure cumulates, rather than mafic to ultramafic lavas.
δ18O values for garnets do not deviate significantly from typical mantle values. The observations reported do not discriminate
unambiguously between continental and oceanic origins for the various eclogite components in the mantle lithosphere of this

A mechanism of damped oscillations of a coronal loop is investigated. The loop is treated as a thin toroidal flux rope with
two stationary photospheric footpoints, carrying both toroidal and poloidal currents. The forces and the flux-rope dynamics
are described within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The main features of the theory are the following:
i) Oscillatory motions are determined by the Lorentz force that acts on curved current-carrying plasma structures and ii) damping is caused by drag that provides the momentum coupling between the flux rope and the ambient coronal plasma. The
oscillation is restricted to the vertical plane of the flux rope. The initial equilibrium flux rope is set into oscillation
by a pulse of upflow of the ambient plasma. The theory is applied to two events of oscillating loops observed by the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). It is shown that the Lorentz force and drag with a reasonable value of the coupling coefficient (c
d
) and without anomalous dissipation are able to accurately account for the observed damped oscillations. The analysis shows
that the variations in the observed intensity can be explained by the minor radial expansion and contraction. For the two
events, the values of the drag coefficient consistent with the observed damping times are in the range c
d
≈2 – 5, with specific values being dependent on parameters such as the loop density, ambient magnetic field, and the loop
geometry. This range is consistent with a previous MHD simulation study and with values used to reproduce the observed trajectories
