Data on the distribution of dimethylsulphide (DMS) and dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) in relation to phytoplankton abundance in different oceanic environments is important to understand the biogeochemistry of DMS, which plays an important role in the radiation balance of the earth. During the summer monsoon of 2001 measurements were made for DMS and DMSPt (total DMSP) together with related biological parameters in the Bay of Bengal. Both DMS and DMSPt were restricted to the upper 40 m of the water column. Diatoms accounted for more than 95% of the phytoplankton and were the major contributors to the DMS and DMSPt pool. The mean concentration of DMS in the upper 40 m was observed to be around 1.8+/-1.9 nM in the study area, while DMSPt concentrations varied between 0.7 nM and 40.2 nM with a mean of 10.4+/-8.2 nM. The observed lower DMSPt in the northern Bay in spite of higher mean primary productivity, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton cell counts seemed to result from grazing. Though salinity divides the Bay into different biogeochemical provinces there is no relation between salinity and DMS or DMSPt. On the other hand DMS was linearly related to chlorophyll a:phaeopigments ratio. The results suggest the need for deeper insight into the role of diatoms in the biogeochemical cycling of DMS. 相似文献

The EM12 multibeam echosounder can record acoustic backscatter information as well as high resolution bathymetry. The dataset presented, from the axis of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 45° N, was the first EM12 survey of a mid-ocean ridge. This paper presents methods for utilising the backscatter information. Data processing enables the production of a mosaic of acoustic backscatter, and visualisation techniques are investigated to provide initial qualitative views of the combined backscatter and bathymetry datasets. The co-registration of the backscatter and bathymetry data enables quantitative analysis of their relationships. Various sites of different geological type have been selected and their angular acoustic backscattering relationships estimated, including the effect on backscatter of incidence angle, its regional variability with bottom type and the influence of bottom slope. Incidence angles and bottom type are shown to affect backscatter to a similar degree, while slopes appear to contribute little. The geometry of hull-mounted systems, such as the EM12, is significantly different from that of conventional sidescan sonars, such as GLORIA, and the backscatter images from the two types differ in various respects. Because of the wide variations in incidence angle that are common with hull-mounted systems, and the importance of incidence angle in determining backscatter strength, it is vital to consider the effect of incidence angle during interpretation. 相似文献

Abstract— Densities and porosities of meteorites are physical properties that can be used to infer characteristics of asteroid interiors. We report density and porosity measurements of 42 pieces of 30 ordinary chondrites and provide a quantification of the errors of the gas pycnometer method used in this study. Based on our measurements, we find that no significant correlation exists between porosity and petrologic grade, chemical group, sample mass, bulk and grain density, or shock level. To investigate variations in porosity and density between pieces of a meteorite, we examined stones from two showers, Holbrook and Pultusk. Examination of nine samples of Holbrook suggests relative homogeneity in porosity and density between pieces of this shower. Measurements of three samples of Pultusk show homogeneity in bulk density, in contrast to Wilkison and Robinson (2000), a study that reported significant variations in bulk density between 11 samples of Pultusk. Finally, examination of two friable ordinary chondrites, Bjurböle and Allegan, reveal variability in friability and porosity among pieces of the same fall. Bayesian modelling of health risks in relation to environmental exposures offers advantages over conventional (non-Bayesian)
modelling approaches. We report an example using research into whether, after controlling for different confounders, air pollution
(NOx) has a significant effect on coronary heart disease mortality, estimating the relative risk associated with different levels
of exposure. We use small area data from Sheffield, England and describe how the data were assembled. We compare the results
obtained using a generalized (Poisson) log-linear model with adjustment for overdispersion, with the results obtained using
a hierarchical (Poisson) log-linear model with spatial random effects. Both classes of models were fitted using a Bayesian
approach. Including spatial random effects models both overdispersion and spatial autocorrelation effects arising as a result
of analysing data from small contiguous areas. The first modelling framework has been widely used, while the second provides
a more rigorous model for hypothesis testing and risk estimation when data refer to small areas. When the models are fitted
controlling only for the age and sex of the populations, the generalized log-linear model shows NOx effects are significant at all levels, whereas the hierarchical log-linear model with spatial random effects shows significant
effects only at higher levels. We then adjust for deprivation and smoking prevalence. Uncertainty in the estimates of smoking
prevalence, arising because the data are based on samples, was accounted for through errors-in-variables modelling. NOx effects apparently are significant at the two highest levels according to both modelling frameworks.

Changes in deformation mechanism coupled with spatial and temporal variations in reaction rates can result in preservation of disequilibrium mineral compositions in rocks affected by synmetamorphic shearing. Thermobarometric calculations on such rocks may thus yield meaningless results. We use Garbenschiefer samples from a shear zone in the Eastern Alps to study the effects of different deformational processes on calculated pressures and temperatures in samples that experienced the same overall PTt history. We focus on plagioclase, which accommodates strain by a variety of deformation mechanisms and is a key mineral in many thermobarometers. Plagioclase that deformed largely via dislocation creep mechanisms shows concentric chemical zoning, whereas plagioclase that experienced dissolution-precipitation creep preserves complex zoning. Rim compositions in the latter domains are not necessarily the youngest compositions, nor did they typically equilibrate with other phases in the assemblage. The timing of hornblende breakdown reactions relative to changes in plagioclase deformation mechanism also affected chemical zoning. Samples that escaped shear strain while near the thermal maximum yield internally consistent thermobarometric results, whereas samples that experienced shearing near the thermal maximum yield scattered results. Some of the variability in the results likely represents real differences in the P–T conditions at which equilibration occurred during deformation. However, much of the variability represents spurious results obtained by pairing mineral compositions that were never in equilibrium with one another. Extraction of useful P–T information from samples that experienced synmetamorphic deformation requires careful documentation of the relationships between deformation mechanisms and chemical zoning in order to select appropriate mineral compositions for thermobarometric calculations.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users. 相似文献

A substantial proportion of the glacial sediments of East Anglia, England, are chaotic and highly deformed. This has been attributed to (a) direct glaciotectonic deformation or (b) slumping of glaciomarine sediments. We show that interpretation (a) leads to a classification of subglacial glaciotectonic deposits into sites of ‘constructional deformation’, where little or no erosion of the preglacial deposits has occurred and styles of deformation are preserved moving up in the sequence, and ‘excavational deformation’, where substantial erosion of preglacial sediments has occurred and deformational styles are superimposed on each other. By using glaciological and geotechnical theory, we show that the expression of these deformational styles in East Anglia is a natural response to the stress fields imposed by the ice-sheet, and that in consequence their spatial relationships are explicable. The depth of deformation is related to the geotechnical properties of till and substrate, the stress and effective stress fields, and found to be consistent with observations. 相似文献

In this paper, an economic model was constructed to determine the optimal wolf population and distribution across the Northern Rocky Mountains. Both ecological and economic concepts were incorporated in an implicitly spatial social welfare maximization problem. This interdisciplinary model relies on multiple data sources, including current wolf population and distribution information, opportunity cost to local landowners, and contingent valuation studies to determine willingness-to-pay for wolves. Economic models tend to externalize ecological concerns and ecological models often omit the complex human dimensions of conservation policy. Accordingly, this model can serve as a guide for integrating best practices from both fields. The model presented here is sufficiently general to apply to wolves in other ecosystems and to other highly interacting species such as beavers and bison. The Northern Rocky Mountain wolf was used as an example of how this economic model works, but this model can be applied far more broadly. 相似文献

During long-lived basaltic eruptions, overflows from lava channels and breaching of channel levées are important processes
in the development of extensive 'a'ā lava flow-fields. Short-lived breaches result in inundation of areas adjacent to the
main channel. However, if a breach remains open, lava supply to the original flow front is significantly reduced, and flow-field
widening is favoured over lengthening. The development of channel breaches and overflows can therefore exert strong control
over the overall flow-field development, but the processes that determine their location and frequency are currently poorly
understood. During the final month of the 2008–2009 eruption of Mt. Etna, Sicily, a remote time-lapse camera was deployed
to monitor events in a proximal region of a small ephemeral lava flow. For over a period of ~10 h, the flow underwent changes
in surface elevation and velocity, repeated overflows of varying vigour and the construction of a channel roof (a required
prelude to lava tube formation). Quantitative interpretation of the image sequence was facilitated by a 3D model of the scene
constructed using structure-from-motion computer vision techniques. As surface activity waned during the roofing process,
overflow sites retreated up the flow towards the vent, and eventually, a new flow was initiated. Our observations and measurements
indicate that flow surface stagnation and flow inflation propagated up-flow at an effective rate of ~6 m h−1, and that these processes, rather than effusion rate variations, were ultimately responsible for the most vigorous overflow
events. We discuss evidence for similar controls during levée breaching and channel switching events on much larger flows
