Summary. Processes involved in the generation of arc maginatism, which are associated with the evolution of subduction zones, may in certain cases be able to record the variations of the Earth's magnetic field with time. A mechanism is suggested which may generate lineated magnetic anomaly patterns, similar to those observed over oceanic areas, with bands of alternating normal and reverse polarity parallel to the subduction zone. It is suggested that magmatic arc rocks acquire remanent magnetizations creating a zone of normal or reverse polarity in the magmatic arc zone, and if the geometric arrangement of plate subduction changes, i.e. the region of primary magma generation is displaced normal to the trench by changes of either the Wadati—Benioff zone dip angle or the trench position, then active arc magmatism is displaced accordingly, creating another magnetic anomaly zone. An important factor is the rate of displacement of arc magnatism with time; estimates for the south-western North America magmatic arc gives a value of about 1.2 cm yr−l for the interval 100–55 Myr ago, which is comparable to sea-floor spreading rates. The elongated patterns of positive and negative magnetic anomalies, trenchward of the Japan trench and the Kurile—Kamchatka trench may have been produced by this process. Elongated intense magnetic anomalies are also observed in other magmatic arc assemblages, such as in western North America. Processes which may obscure these lineated anomaly patterns include, e.g. tectomc rotations within the magmatic arc zone, changes in thermal conditions and igneous activity, remagnetization events and decay of remanent magnetism. Experimental results on short-term magnetic viscosity behaviour at room temperature are described. A simple method, using a Digico spinner magnetometer, is used to measure short-term magnetic moment decays. These decays follow linear relationships with the logarithm of time showing relaxation times of less than 100–1000 s, i.e. superparamagnetic grain assemblages at room temperature. These effects are found to be very common in a wide variety of rock types, and may affect routine measurements of remanent magnetization. 相似文献

The inelastic response of single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) systems subjected to earthquake motions is studied and a method to derive hysteretic energy dissipation spectra is proposed. The amount of energy dissipated through inelastic deformation combined with other response parameters allow the estimation of the required deformation capacity to avoid collapse for a given design earthquake. In the first part of the study, a detailed analysis of correlation between energy and ground motion intensity indices is carried out to identify the indices to be used as scaling parameters and base line of the energy dissipation spectrum. The response of elastoplastic, bilinear, and stiffness degrading systems with 5 per cent damping, subjected to a world‐wide ensemble of 52 earthquake records is considered. The statistical analysis of the response data provides the factors for constructing the energy dissipation spectrum as well as the Newmark–Hall inelastic spectra. The combination of these spectra allows the estimation of the ultimate deformation capacity required to survive the design earthquake, capacity that can also be presented in spectral form as an example shows. A bright fireball appeared on the sky during the spectrophotometric observations with the 2.2-m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory. The CCD spectrum of the scattered light of the fireball has been recorded. The spectrum is typical for a very bright, slowly moving fireball. For the first time, the spectral region 6600 – 7150 Å could be studied in such a case. Six spectral lines were identified here, the most remarkable being the lithium line at 6708 Å. The estimated lithium abundance proved to be consistent with meteoritic values. 相似文献

Absolute paleointensity experiments were carried out using Shaw’s method [Geophys. J. Res. Astr. Soc. 39 (1974) 133] and its modifications [Geophys. J. Res. Astr. Soc. 54 (1978) 241; Geophys. J. Int. 80 (1985) 773; Geophys. J. Int. 118 (1994) 781] on 49 samples belonging to six Late Quaternary basaltic flows from central Mexico. Samples were selected from a large collection because of their low viscosity index, stable remanent magnetization and close to reversible continuous thermomagnetic curves. Moreover, they previously yielded high quality Thellier paleointensity results, which makes them good candidates to assess the reliability of Shaw’s paleointensity method. Only 13 samples yielded acceptable results using Shaw’s original method (ARM2/ARM1 ratio varies from 0.95 to 1.05 for accepted determinations) although 6 samples do not pass the validity test proposed by Tsunakawa and Shaw [Geophys. J. Int. 118 (1994) 781] and thus should be rejected for paleointensity analyses. Rolph and Shaw’s [Geophys. J. Int. 80 (1985) 773] method gives reliable determination only in one case and no single determination was obtained by Kono’s [Geophys. J. Res. Astr. Soc. 54 (1978) 241] modification. Our results indicate an extremely low success rate of Shaw’s paleointensity method, which may be due to magneto-chemical changes that occurred during heating of samples above their Curie temperatures. 相似文献

Engineering geological mapping was carried out, at a scale of 1:100,000, in the Fortaleza Metropolitan Region, located in northeastern Brazil, to provide engineering geological information as an aid in planning land use and occupation. In this study, eight basic maps were produced drawing: urban areas, lithology, unconsolidated materials in addition to geomorphological map showing slopes, water resources, engineering geological zoning and distribution of geological–geotechnical environmental problems based on information collected through field and laboratory investigations. The Chicxulub 200 km diameter crater located in the Yucatan platform of the Gulf of Mexico formed 65 Myr ago and has since been covered by Tertiary post-impact carbonates. The sediment cover and absence of significant volcanic and tectonic activity in the carbonate platform have protected the crater from erosion and deformation, making Chicxulub the only large multi-ring crater in which ejecta is well preserved. Ejecta deposits have been studied by drilling/coring in the southern crater sector and at outcrops in Belize, Quintana Roo and Campeche; little information is available from other sectors. Here, we report on the drilling/coring of a section of 34 m of carbonate breccias at 250 m depth in the Valladolid area (120 km away from crater center), which are interpreted as Chicxulub proximal ejecta deposits. The Valladolid breccias correlate with the carbonate breccias cored in the Peto and Tekax boreholes to the south and at similar radial distance. This constitutes the first report of breccias in the eastern sector close to the crater rim. Thickness of the Valladolid breccias is less than that at the other sites, which may indicate erosion of the ejecta deposits before reestablishment of carbonate deposition. The region east of the crater rim appears different from regions to the south and west, characterized by high density and scattered distribution of sinkholes. 相似文献
