As part of the STRATAFORM project, a series of cores were obtained from the Eel River Margin area of Eureka, California. The geotechnical analysis of intact specimens and of reconstituted samples provides some insight on the development of shear strength with burial. The results show the effect of bioturbation in the early part of the lifetime of a sediment. SEDCON tests were used to proposed various relationships which help predict the changes in density, liquidity index, and strength as a function of depth. These relationships are found useful from near the water sediment-interface down to a depth of at least 400 m in the sediment column. 相似文献

Morphological and chronological studies have been carried out on coralline algal buildups (“coralligène”) situated between 10 and 60 m depth near Marseilles, and in Corsica (France). Despite the presence of occasionally sizeable quantities of iron hydroxide, these constructions prove to be a reliable material for radiocarbon dating. Ages obtained using this method range from 640±120 yrs B.P. (Corsica, Scandola Natural Reserve, −15 m) to 7760±80 yrs B.P. (Marseilles, Grand Congloue, −52 m). Internal erosion surfaces within the buildups give evidence of discontinuous development. The accumulation rate of the coralligène constructions is very low (0.006–0.83 mm yr−1 according to the depth and time period). The higher values (0.53–0.83 mm yr−1) were recorded for the deeper constructions. They correspond to a period between 8000 and 6000 yrs B.P. After 6000 yrs B.P., the only appreciable accumulation rates (0.11–0.42 mm yr−1) were recorded for constructions situated between 10 and 35 m depth, whereas the accumulation rates of deep coralligène (> 50 m) appear to be low or zero. The age of the large constructions (overhang: 80 cm in width) is positively correlated with depth (r = 0.95; p < 0.005). Their development occurred during the Flandrian transgression. The oldest structures, today situated at 50 to 60 m depth, started to develop when water depth was probably no greater than 10 to 15 m. Apart from in strongly shaded fissures on rocky coasts and areas subjected to heavy sedimentation, the main framework building algal species was initially Mesophyllum lichenoides (Ellis) Lemoine, a high tolerant species to light, hydrodynamic energy and temperature. With the rise in sea level, the coralligène structure gradually became available to other less tolerant algal species (Lithophyllum, Lithothamnion), and the crustforming population diversified. Because of the good preservation of coralligène structures, the reliability of radiocarbon dating and the correlation between the age and bathymetric position of the large coralligène structures (except in areas of heavy sedimentation and fissures in shallow rocky coasts), these buildups are considered to be of use as biological indicators of variations in sea level. 相似文献

The Ethiopian side of central Afar was struck in August 1989 by the largest seismic sequence (three 6.1 ≤ M s ≤ 6.3 events, 15 with M s or m b ≥ 5.0) since that of Serdo in 1969. Using the Djibouti seismological network, we relocated 297 of the events of that sequence. As most of the large events took place outside the network, we assessed the accuracy and stability of earthquake relocations by using three different velocity models and two relocation codes to try to relate individual shocks to distinct faults and surface breaks. A majority of the events apparently occurred underneath the floor of the Dôbi graben, an area about 45 km long and 15 km wide, rupturing boundary and inner floor faults, in agreement with the surface cracks and scarps that we mapped in the area. The relocation shows that the principal events propagated about 50 km northwestwards along the graben in the first 40 hr. A day and a half after the beginning of the sequence, smaller events ( M ≤ 4) started to propagate more than 55 km eastwards, towards Asal Lake. Using two three-component stations installed near the Ethiopian border, we could determine reliable depths for 21 events. The depths are compatible with a seismogenic crust about 14 km thick in the Dôbi and Hanle graben area. Although the Dôbi sequence ruptured about 50 km of the fault array extending from Serdo to Asal, where the regional stress was released by earthquakes in 1969 and 1978, respectively, a seismic gap about 50 km long still subsists along the northern part of the Gaggade region (Der'êla half-graben). 相似文献

A 1.5-dimensional, 1.5-layer shallow water model and an ensemble Kalman filter are used to evaluate the feasibility of estimating friction parameters and determining friction laws of oceanic gravity currents. The two friction laws implemented are a linear Rayleigh friction and a quadratic drag law. We demonstrate that the assimilation procedure rapidly estimates the total frictional force, whereas the distinction between the two laws is evolving on a slower time scale. We also demonstrate that parameter estimation can, in this way, choose between different parametrisations and help to discriminate between physical laws of nature by estimating the coefficients presented in such parametrisations. 相似文献

The Dog Creek archaeological site (NcVi‐3), located in the northern Yukon, provides evidence of complex site transformational processes related to microclimatic conditions occurring since the mid‐Holocene. Geoarchaeological research at Dog Creek sought to interpret site formation processes in order to understand the relationship between surficial artifacts, buried artifacts, and stratified sediments. It also attempted to reconstruct the periglacial processes that were active in transforming the site and their relationships to microclimatic conditions. Sedimentology and fabric analysis show that artifacts were buried by solifluction and disturbed by frost heave and cryoturbation. Radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis demonstrated that solifluction took place approximately 5200–2000 years ago when a spruce forest existed at the site. This evidence suggests an onset of cooling conditions that continues to the present. Resonance period is a key parameter in the seismic design of a structure, thus dynamic parameters of buildings in Beirut (Lebanon) were investigated based on ambient vibration method for risk and vulnerability assessment. Lebanon is facing high seismic hazard due to its major faults, combined to a high seismic risk caused by dense urbanization in addition to the lack of a seismic design code implementation. For this study, ambient vibration recordings have been performed on 330 RC buildings, period parameters extracted and statistically analyzed to identify correlations with physical building parameters (height, horizontal dimensions, age) and site characteristics (rock sites or soft sites). The study shows that (1) the building height or number of floors (N) is the primary statistically robust parameter for the estimation of the fundamental period T; (2) the correlation between T and N is linear and site dependent: T ≈ N/23 for rock sites and N/18 for soft sites; (3) the measured damping is inversely proportional to the period: the taller the building the lower is the damping; (4) a significant overestimation of the period exists in current building codes. The Sun in not located in a major spiral arm, and sits in a small ‘Local Arm’ (variously called arm, armlet, blob, branch, bridge, feather, finger, segment, spur, sub-arm, swath, etc.). The diversity of names for the ‘Local Arm’ near the Sun indicates an uncertainty about its shape or pitch or its extent from the Sun in each galactic quadrant, as well as an uncertainty about its origin.Here we extract data about the small ‘Local Arm’ near the Sun, from the recent observational literature, over many arm tracers, and we use statistics in order to find the local arm’s mean extent from the Sun, its possible shape and pitch angle from the direction of galactic longitude \(90^{\circ}\). Employing all tracers, the Local Arm is about 4 kpc long by 2 kpc large. The Sun is within 1 kpc of the center of the local arm. Proposed ‘bridges’ and ‘fingers’ are assessed. These bridges to nearby spiral arms and fingers across spiral arms may not reach the nearest spiral arms, owing to kinematic and photometric distance effects.We then compare these statistical results with some predictions from recent models proposed to explain the local arm (perturbations, resonances, density wave, halo supercloud, debris trail from a dwarf galaxy).The least controversial models involve importing materials from elsewhere (halo supercloud, debris trail) as a first step, and to be later deformed in a second step (by the Galaxy’s differential rotation into become roughly parallel to spiral arms) and then subjected to ongoing forces (global density waves, local perturbations). 相似文献
