We have used the results of a realistic simulation of convection to estimate the power input to coronal loops from the twisting of photospheric magnetic field in intergranular vortices. In this simulation, the vorticity is large (a mean of 0.03 s–1) nearly everywhere in the intergranular lanes, not merely at the corners of three granules. We found the autocorrelation time of vorticity images to be 45 s, but individual vortices last as long as 144 s. Our estimate suggests that field line twisting could supply a substantial fraction, if not all, of the required power to the quiet corona.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. Seven doubly photographed meteors reported in the literature are shown to be members of the Delta Aurigids, which now appear to extend from September 29 to October 18. Visual observations from the second half of activity in 1980 reveal a zenith hourly rate of no more than 2 or 3. The mean orbital elements of the stream point to an unknown short period (115 years) retrogade comet as a parent.  相似文献

X-ray observations from Vela-5 spacecraft of five flares occurring in November and December 1969 were leduced to temperatures and emission measures as a function of time. This reduction was done assuming a thermal spectrum including free-free and free-bound emission. A model is presented for the formation of HCN in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Jupiter by ultraviolet photolysis of the C2H5N isomer aziridine, a product of the recombination of NH2 and C2H3 radicals, which originate, respectively, from ammonia photolysis and addition of H atoms to acetylene. An HCN column density of ~ 2 × 1017 cm?2 in the tropopause region, which is comparable to that observed by A. T. Tokunaga, S. C. Beck, T. R. Geballe, J. H. Lacy, and E. Serabyn (Icarus48, 283–289, 1981), is predicted when vertical mixing is slow above the ammonia cloudtops. Sensitivity of the HCN column density to the individual rate constants and the eddy diffusion coefficient profile is discussed, as is the possibility of the existence of additional HCN-yielding pathways. Ammonia, which is saturated in the upper troposphere, is strongly depleted by photolysis in the lower stratosphere. Phosphine is also strongly depleted by photolysis and its abundance in the upper troposphere is shown to depend strongly on vertical mixing in the tropopause region. The possibility of the formation of phosphirane, the P-containing analog of aziridine, is considered but found to be substantially less probable than aziridine.  相似文献

For an Oort cloud comet to be seen as a new comet, its perihelion must be moved from a point exterior to the loss cylinder boundary to a point interior to observable limits in a single orbit. The galactic tide can do this continuously, in a non-impulsive manner. Near-parabolic comets, with specific angular momentum , will most easily be made observable. Therefore, to reduce the perihelion distance H must decrease. Since weakly perturbed comets are, in general, more numerous than strongly perturbed comets, we can anticipate that new comets made observable by a weak tidal torque will more likely be first observed when their slowly changing perihelion distances are approaching their minimum osculating values under the action of the tide, rather than receding from their minimum values. That is, defining ΔHtide as the vector change due to the galactic tidal torque during the prior orbit, and Hobs as the observed vector, the sign S≡Sign(Hobs·ΔHtide) will more likely be −1 than +1 if a weak galactic tidal perturbation indeed dominates in making comets observable. Using comet data of the highest quality class (1A) for new comets (a>10,000 AU), we find that 49 comets have S=−1 and 22 have S=+1. The binomial probability that as many or more would exhibit this characteristic if in fact S=?1 were equally likely is only 0.0009. This characteristic also persists in other long-period comet populations, lending support to the notion that they are dominated by comets recently arrived from the outer Oort cloud. The preponderance of S=−1 also correlates with weakly perturbed (i.e., smaller semimajor axis) new comets in a statistically significant manner. This is strong evidence that the data are of sufficiently high quality and sufficiently free of observational selection effects to detect this unique imprint of the tide.  相似文献

The loss of surface vegetation and reduced infiltration caused by wildfires can trigger gully rejuvenation, resulting in damage to downstream aquatic resources and risk to human life and property. We developed a spatially explicit metric of burn severity — the Burn Severity Distribution Index (BSDI) — and tested its ability to predict post-fire gully rejuvenation in 1st and 2nd order basins burned in the 2000 Valley Complex fires in the Sapphire Mountains of western Montana. The BSDI was derived from burn severity data interpreted from Landsat 7 satellite imagery using the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) method, and ranged from 0.0 for completely unburned basins to 4.0 for basins burned entirely at high severity. In July 2001 rainstorms with peak 30-minute intensities of up to 17 mm h− 1 triggered gully rejuvenation in 66 of the 171 basins examined. The frequency of gully rejuvenation was higher in basins with higher BSDI values, increasing from zero for basins with a BSDI less than 1.3 to 67% for basins with a BSDI greater than 3.0. Binary logistic regression indicated that BSDI was a more significant predictor of gully rejuvenation than basin morphometric variables. The absence of gully rejuvenation in several basins with a high BSDI was attributed to low gradient, dense riparian vegetation, or concentration of high burn severity at lower elevations in the basin. The presence of gully rejuvenation in several basins with a low BSDI was associated with false negative NBR classification errors in northwest aspects, and concentration of severe burn impacts in the drainage headslopes. BSDI is a useful metric for predicting gully rejuvenation after wildfire. The use of the BSDI in Burned Area Emergency Response team assessments could improve the planning, implementation, and monitoring of burned area recovery treatments.  相似文献
