Impure reworked evaporitic sandstones, preserved on Meridiani Planum, Mars, are mixtures of roughly equal amounts of altered siliciclastic debris, of basaltic provenance (40 ± 10% by mass), and chemical constituents, dominated by evaporitic minerals (jarosite, Mg-, Ca-sulfates ± chlorides ± Fe-, Na-sulfates), hematite and possibly secondary silica (60 ± 10%). These chemical constituents and their relative abundances are not an equilibrium evaporite assemblage and to a substantial degree have been reworked by aeolian and subaqueous transport. Ultimately they formed by evaporation of acidic waters derived from interaction with olivine-bearing basalts and subsequent diagenetic alteration. The rocks experienced an extended diagenetic history, with at least two and up to four distinct episodes of cementation, including stratigraphically restricted zones of recrystallization and secondary porosity, non-randomly distributed, highly spherical millimeter-scale hematitic concretions, millimeter-scale crystal molds, interpreted to have resulted from dissolution of a highly soluble evaporite mineral, elongate to sheet-like vugs and evidence for minor synsedimentary deformation (convolute and contorted bedding, possible teepee structures or salt ridge features). Other features that may be diagenetic, but more likely are associated with relatively recent meteorite impact, are meter-scale fracture patterns, veins and polygonal fractures on rock surfaces that cut across bedding. Crystallization of minerals that originally filled the molds, early cement and sediment deformation occurred syndepositionally or during early diagenesis. All other diagenetic features are consistent with formation during later diagenesis in the phreatic (fluid saturated) zone or capillary fringe of a groundwater table under near isotropic hydrological conditions such as those expected during periodic groundwater recharge. Textural evidence suggests that rapidly formed hematitic concretions post-date the primary mineral now represented by crystal molds and early pore-filling cements but pre-date secondary moldic and vug porosity. The second generation of cements followed formation of secondary porosity. This paragenetic sequence is consistent with an extended history of syndepositional through post-depositional diagenesis in the presence of a slowly fluctuating, chemically evolving, but persistently high ionic strength groundwater system.  相似文献

Method for Determining the Age of Diesel Oil Spills in the Soil   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
This study evaluates the changes in the composition of diesel oil as a function of the time during which the oil has been present in the vadose zone. The study also develops a reliable method for determining the age of diesel oil in the subsurface soil environment at service stations, oil terminals, and similar locations where the diesel is protected from direct exposure to factors increasing the rate of microbial activity.
Analyses demonstrate that n-alkanes are the dominant components of fresh diesel oil and isoprenoids the dominant components of degraded diesel oil. The analyses also show that the composition of fresh diesel oil produced in 1992 and that produced in 1974 is basically the same.
The difference in composition between fresh and degraded oil is the basis for defining a degradation ratio or rate of alteration in the composition of the diesel oil expressed in terms of a ratio between n-alkanes and isoprenoids. At 12 test locations where the date of property damage was known, the C17/pristane ratio had by far the highest correlation factor (.89) with the residence time of the diesel based on the average degradation ratio for each location. Based on this high correlation factor, the C17/pristane ratio can be used to estimate the age of a diesel oil spill. The standard error of such an estimate is approximately two years.  相似文献

Fugitive hydrocarbon emissions from oil and gas production, always a safety concern, are currently a growing environmental and economic concern. Fugitive emissions from the offshore industry comprise mainly methane, which has an atmospheric warming contribution of approximately 14 times that of CO2, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which have an atmospheric warming contribution of around twice that of CO2.

Current studies indicate that fugitive emissions are approximately equivalent to 0.02% of the total gas produced in 1992 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. A positive downward trend in fugitive emissions from oil and gas production has been identified and attributed to advances in technology and changes in design and operating philosophy.  相似文献

The velocities of two Devonian-Mississippian shales have been measured to confining pressures of 200 MPa in a laboratory study of anisotropy and wave propagation. Both samples were found to be transversely isotropic at elevated pressures with the main symmetry axis perpendicular to bedding. The elastic constants of the shales were used to calculate phase and group velocity surfaces as a function of angle to the bedding normal. Multiple velocity measurements in non-symmetry directions, not undertaken in previously published studies of shales, have been used to confirm features observed on calculated velocity surfaces. It is demonstrated that velocities measured in non-symmetry directions are phase velocities. Group velocities were found to be significantly lower than the corresponding phase velocities of the shales due to their high anisotropies. Shear wave splitting was found to be negligible for propagation directions within approximately 30° of the bedding normals.  相似文献

Information about the toxicity of heavy metals and organics to aquatic organisms can be obtained from bioassays. These are classified according to the type of response obtained: quantal or continuous, and according to whether individual organisms originate from a single clone or have a tolerance distribution. Basic features of the probit, logit, and Weibull dose-response models for one toxic substance are considered. It is shown that a version of the logit model is complementary to the Monod equation for the growth rate of microorganisms under substrate limitation. Multiple toxicity models can be of the non-interactive or competitive type. The standard water quality criterion for concentration addition is based on the assumption that the toxicants act on similar biological systems, and that the action tolerances for individuals are fully correlated. Pertinent examples of the application of the models for one or several toxic substances are discussed.  相似文献

Scaling laws are derived for the time-average magnetic dipole moment in rotating convection-driven numerical dynamo models. Results from 145 dynamo models with a variety of boundary conditions and heating modes, covering a wide section of parameter space, show that the time-average dipole moment depends on the convective buoyancy flux F. Two distinct regimes are found above the critical magnetic Reynolds number for onset of dynamo action. In the first regime the external magnetic field is dipole-dominant, whereas for larger buoyancy flux or slower rotation the external field is dominated by higher multipoles and the dipole moment is reduced by a factor of 10 or more relative to the dipolar regime. For dynamos driven by basal heating, the dipole moment M increases like M  F1/3 in the dipolar regime. Reversing dipolar dynamos tend to cluster near the multipolar transition, which is shown to depend on a local Rossby number parameter. The geodynamo lies close to this transition, suggesting an explanation for polarity reversals and the possibility of a weaker dipole earlier in Earth history. Internally heated dynamos generate smaller dipole moments overall and show a gradual transition from dipolar to multipolar states. Our scaling yields order of magnitude agreement with the dipole moments of Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Ganymede, and predicts a multipolar-type dynamo for Mercury.  相似文献

Solute exchange between the interstitial waters and overlying waters on the Washington continental shelf was investigated based on measurements of the pore-water sulfate distribution and sulfate reduction rates as well as through models describing the distribution of sulfate in anaerobic pore waters. The depth-integrated sulfate reduction rate greatly exceeded the influx of sulfate attributable to molecular diffusion and sediment accumulation acting on the measured vertical sulfate gradients, and indicated that additional transport mechanisms must have been operating. Sediment mixing was probably not the primary mechanism since high eddy diffusivities would be required to depths of 30 cm to maintain the observed sulfate distribution, whereas previously measured210Pb distributions indicated sediment mixing is primarily restricted to depths <7 cm. Irrigation of bottom water through animal burrows was the most likely mechanism. To describe this process, a general diffusive irrigation coefficient, B, was formulated. Vertical profiles of B showed the main irrigation zone occurred between 2 and 10 cm with reduced irrigation rates occurring below this. These coefficients calculated from the sulfate distribution were similar to ones calculated from previously published radon measurements at the same stations, indicating that this formulation of irrigation exchange may be useful in modelling the exchange of dissolved solutes between the pore water and the bottom water.  相似文献

This paper compares how well satellite versus weather station measurements of climate predict agricultural performance in Brazil, India, and the United States. Although weather stations give accurate measures of ground conditions, they entail sporadic observations that require interpolation where observations are missing. In contrast, satellites have trouble measuring some ground phenomenon such as precipitation but they provide complete spatial coverage of various parameters over a landscape. The satellite temperature measurements slightly outperform the interpolated ground station data but the precipitation ground measurements generally outperform the satellite surface wetness index. In India, the surface wetness index outperforms station precipitation but this may be reflecting irrigation, not climate. The results suggest that satellites provide promising measures of temperature but that ground station data may still be preferred for measuring precipitation in rural settings.  相似文献
