We study a model of extended radio sources (ERS), in particular, extragalactic jets and radio lobes, which are inhomogeneous and where noncompressive Alfvén and surface Alfvén waves (and not shocks and magnetosonic waves) are primarily excited. We assume that a negligible thermal population exists (i.e., the ion density at the low-energy cut-off of the power law distribution is greater than the ion density of the thermal population, if present). Due to internal instabilities and/or the interaction of the ERS with the ambient medium, surface Alfvén waves (SAW) are created. We show that even very small amplitude SAW are mode converted to kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW) which produce large moving accelerating potentials , parallel to the magnetic field. Neglecting nonlinear perturbations, and for typical physical parameters of ERS, we obtaine1 MeV. Wesuggest that these potentials are important in acceleration (e.g., injection energy) and reacceleration of electrons in ERS. We show that energy losses by synchrotron radiation can be compensated by reacceleration by KAW. The relation between KAW acceleration, and previously studied cyclotron-resonance acceleration by Alfvén waves, is discussed.  相似文献

A new period (P=2 . d 9042997) of the eclipsing binary system VZ Hydrae has been given, which is based on all the available times of minima. The period based on the photoelectric epochs has also been presented. The O?C diagram and detailed period study of VZ Hya have been presented for the first time, and the period changes have been estimated in different portions of the O?C diagram. Significant period changes do not appear to have occurred in VZ Hya, however, the O?C diagram suggests that the period of the system shows a slow tendency to increase. Period changes of 10?5 d (?) to 10?7 d have occurred around the years 1933, 1971, and 1975. All four period changes are noted in the time-interval 1918 to 1978. Upward treands appear stronger than the declining trends. Secondary minima show larger fluctuations than the primary minima. The fluctuations of the O?C values around the zero-line of VZ Hya demands notice for searching out the cause of period variations such as the presence of a third body.  相似文献

We describe the first X-ray monitoring of a symbiotic star during phases of enhanced activity. AG Dra is a Pop II object with a composite spectrum, characterized by a cool K-type component, prominent high ionization emission lines and a strong UV continuum which is attributed to a hot dwarf companion. Periodic variability of the UV radiation during minimum could be attributed to the orbital motion of the system. In April 1980 HEAO-2 detected an intense, soft X-ray flux from AG Dra, stronger than in other symbiotic stars. After one major outburst of November 1980, which continued until 1983, two more outbursts occurred in February 1985 and January 1986, and coordinated X-ray (EXOSAT) and ultraviolet (IUE) observations were organized to study the behaviour of AG Dra during different activity phases. EXOSAT observations made during decline after the 1985 outburst, revealed a weak X-ray flux in the Thin Lexan filter of the Low Energy dedtector. Observations made during minimum, in June and November 1985, at phases 0.22 and 0.50 of the UV light curve, disclosed the presence of an intense X-ray flux, which was not occulted in November. AG Dra was again observed with EXOSAT in February 1986 when the stellar luminosity was still at maximum. No X-ray flux was detected, in spite of the prominent, high ionization UV spectrum observed with IUE.A detailed discussion of the X-ray and ultraviolet results on AG Dra in the light of possible models is in progress.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. We present the two-dimensional imaging observations of radio bursts in the frequency range 25–50 MHz made with the Clark Lake multifrequency radioheliograph during a coronal mass ejection event (CME) observed on 1984, June 27 by the SMM Coronagraph/Polarimeter and Mauna Loa K-coronameter. The event was spatially and temporally associated with precursors in the form of meter-decameter type III bursts, soft X-ray emission and a H flare spray. The observed type IV emission in association with the CME (and the H spray) could be interpreted as gyrosynchrotron emission from a plasmoid containing a magnetic field of 2.5 G and nonthermal electrons with a number density of 105 cm–3 and energy 350 keV.On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Kodaikanal, India.  相似文献

Two outbursts and a minimum phase of the dwarf nova CN Orionis have been observed spectroscopically. One outburst was covered almost completely. The outburst spectra show periodic variations of the absorption lines which are interpreted with the formation of an elliptic disc during outburst stage. During decline from outburst a narrow emission line appears in the core of the broad H absorption line. The balmer decrement in the outburst phase is much steeper than in the minimum phase. This implies that during the outburst the emission line region is located more outward in the disk. The semi amplitude of the radial velocity curve was determined to K1=152 km/s±10 km/s. Using the photometric orbital period and an assumption about the inclination angle the approximate system parameters could be derived.Based on observations colleted at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile and at Mount Stromlo Observatory, Canberra, Australia.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Using a sample of 885 females (1/2 of all married women of reproductive age), this study examines the role of education as a determinant of fertility among couples in Kullu town of Himachol Pradesh, India. Of the 885 respondents, only 149 were illiterate. The average family size was 2.88. Findings reveal that 1) the average family size was largest for illiterate respondents (3.57) and for illiterate males (3.76); 2) average family size declined consistently after the middle level of education to 1.29 for post graduate respondents and 2.33 for post graduate males; 3) a negative correlation exists between fertility and education of both husband and wife, with the wife's education having a stronger negative correlation with fertility; and 4) couples with an educational level of matriculation and above have a distinctly smaller family size than those less educated.  相似文献

R. D. Graetz 《Climatic change》1991,18(2-3):147-173
The potential feedback on global atmospheric and climate change of climate-driven changes in terrestrial vegetation is examined by systematically relating the surface exchanges of energy, mass and momentum to two dimensions of vegetation, structure and taxonomy, such that the significance of climate driven changes in these characteristics can be assessed. A detailed quantitative understanding of this feedback is an important prerequisite to realistic and dynamic representations of the Earth's surface within general circulation and biological models (GCMs and GBMs). Without realistic representations of terrestrial vegetation within these models, any forecasts of future climates by these models must be suspect.Several general conclusions are drawn. The first is that the indirect feedbacks, those associated with the clouds and aerosols of the planetary boundary layer, appear to be very powerful but as yet their behaviour and connections with the underlying surface are both poorly understood and captured within GCMs.The physical structure of vegetation, the disposition of biomass in 3-D, is the characteristic that most strongly influences the exchange of momentum (via aerodynamic roughness) and solar radiation (via albedo). Vegetation structure and species composition determine the most important of the mass exchanges, evapotranspiration. Of all of the surface exchanges, the parameterization of evapotranspiration (E ) and the simulation of the water balance over time is the most critical.Lastly, the problems of scaling and spatial heterogeneity, the sub-grid variability of the modellers, looms as a difficult, but not insoluble, problem. It remains a critical problem however, and the detailed parameterization of the various big leaf models stands in absurd contrast to the simplistic generalization of the spatial heterogeneity of terrestrial landscapes.Plant ecologists can contribute to the task of improving the representation of vegetated landscapes within GCMs. There is need to simply and unify the way in which vegetation can be grouped at landscape scales. A classification that is based on function rather than phylogeny is required. The definition of Vegetation Functional Types (VFTs) would expedite research on both the impact of, and feedback on, climate change.  相似文献

Six anchor stations in the St. Lawrence River from the outflow of Lake Ontario to Quebec City, were occupied for ca. 24 hours in June 1987 during low flow conditions. Samples of water and suspended particulate matter were separated by continuous-flow centrifugation, and were collected every two hours.During this sampling period, fluxes of dissolved forms of zinc, copper and nickel increased in Lac St. François and downstream relative to the sum of the fluxes for the two upstream stations at the outflow of Lake Ontario. Increases in the flux of dissolved zinc and copper were pronounced below Montreal and above Lac St. Pierre. For particulate forms of metals, all five metals show that there are significant inputs in the section of the St. Lawrence River between Lac St. François and the station just above the entrance to Lac St. Pierre. The average concentrations of dissolved cadmium, lead, zinc, copper and nickel ranged from 7–23 ng/l; 9–35 ng/l; 0.434–0.939 g/l; 0.15–0.89 g/l and 0.58–1.12 g/l respectively.Regression analysis of the dissolved and particulate metal concentrations suggests that the concentration of dissolved cadmium, lead, zinc and nickel can be predicted from the regression equation and the determination of particulate metal concentration. This prediction appears to be independent of the suspended particulate matter concentration which varies from ca. 1 to 10 mg/l from the outflow of Lake Ontario to Québec City.  相似文献

The water quality of an urban pond in the thickly populated area of Varanasi city (5 km apart) was studied and compared with a rural pond in the Banaras Hindu University campus for transparency, conductivity and nutrient richness (Cl?, SO, PO? P, NO? N, organic carbon, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+) at three depths (surface, 1.5 m, 3 m) at monthly intervals between February 1982 and February 1983. This was done to assess the effects of urban surroundings of a very ancient city sector on pond water quality in reference to that of a rural pond. The rural pond had a lush growth of 12 macrophytic species, whereas the urban one had only such a growth with many phytoplanktonic species. Transparency was maximum in the winter season and the rural pond water was more transparent, while the electrolytical conductance was maximum in the rainy season, being higher in the urban pond. Electrolytical conductivity was negatively correlated to transparency: urban: EC = 1081.612–6.575 T, r2 = 0.897, F1,11 = 96, P <0.005; rural: EC = 728.981–4.328 T, r2 = 0.892, F1,11 = 91, P <0.005. Chloride and sulphate concentrations were highest in summer months, but the former was much higher in the urban pond while the latter in the rural pond. NO3–N was highest in the rainy season in the rural pond and in early winter in the urban one and showed a definite trend with change in depth. PO4–P also varied with depth and time and it was higher in late summer and the early rainy season in the rural pond and in early winter in the urban pond. But both these nutrients were much higher in the urban pond. The maximum organic carbon concentration was found in the rainy season in the rural pond and in summer months in the urban pond. The variation of organic carbon with depth was distinct. Both summer and winter seasons showed almost similar values of calcium concentration in the rural pond, but in the urban pond it was maximum in summer. Organic carbon and calcium were higher in the urban pond. The magnesium concentration was highest in rainy months in both the ponds, but the periodicity of the minimum differed. The distribution of calcium with depth was not well defined. The highest concentration of potassium was found in the winter season in both the ponds. The sodium concentration in the rural pond was observed maximum in summer and minimum in the rainy season, but in the urban pond the trend was different. The variation of potassium and sodium with depth was not well defined. Magnesium and sodium were also higher in the urban pond but potassium was almost at the same concentration in both the ponds. The effect of urbanisation may be one of the factors which might be responsible to the shift of the species composition towards phytoplanktonic flora.  相似文献
