An assessment of the fine-scale eddies in a high-resolution model of the shelf seas west of Great Britain 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
High-resolution (1.8 km) simulations of the shelf seas west of Great Britain with the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS) demonstrate the formation of an intense field of baroclinic eddies in open stratified waters such as the Celtic Sea. These eddies are most likely to be the result of an inverse energy cascade resulting from tidal flow over rough topography, as demonstrated by a series of idealised model experiments. They are shown to possess many of the properties of eddies identified in idealised laboratory and numerical simulations. Namely, they are predominantly anticyclonic and they merge to increase their size up to a limit set by the internal Rossby radius. An investigation of satellite sea surface temperature observations provides indirect evidence that these model eddies are too energetic, long-lived and frequent. The inclusion of a horizontal diffusion term with a shear dependent diffusivity is shown to significantly reduce the eddy kinetic energy and improve the simulation, without significantly affecting the results in other regions. An optimal parameter value is suggested for this resolution, but the need to put the treatment of horizontal turbulence in such models on a sounder theoretical or empirical footing is identified. 相似文献

This study evaluates the ship of opportunity (Ferrybox) concept for both sustained monitoring of UK shelf sea waters and numerical model validation. Release of phosphate from the wreck of a chemical tanker (MV Ece) in the western English Channel (49.73 degrees N, 3.25 degrees W) in March 2006 is used to demonstrate the importance of sustained observations in decision support systems and policy development. The Ferrybox system continuously collects sea surface (5m) data from a suite of autonomous electronic sensors installed on a passenger ferry operating year-round between Portsmouth (UK) and Bilbao (Spain). The detection of anomalously high concentrations of phosphate (1.54mmolm(-3), four times the usual level) and onset of phytoplankton growth close to the wreck site in March 2006 was placed in the context of multiple years of measurements (phosphate, nitrate, silicate and chlorophyll) collected from the Ferrybox system (2003-2006) and the long-term time series station E1 (50.03 degrees N, 4.65 degrees W, 1930-1987) in the English Channel. With regard to decision support, release of phosphate from the tanker is unlikely to pose a threat as phytoplankton growth at the end of winter is not unusual in this region and dissolved inorganic nitrogen rather than phosphate (DIN:DIP=10-18) is likely to ultimately limit algal growth in spring 2006. With regard to policy development, the Oslo and Paris (OSPAR) commissions recommendation of sampling every three years in "non-problem areas" is likely to provide statistically inadequate data, given the interannual and decadal variability identified in the Ferrybox and E1 data: the Ferrybox data show that oceanic winter nutrient concentrations varied by 35-50% between 2003/2004 and 2005/2006 due to deeper mixing of water off-shelf in early 2005/2006 and comparisons between the Ferrybox and E1 years show that the western English Channel is currently experiencing a low in phosphate concentrations similar to those in the 1960s. The importance of Ferrybox data in evaluating the reliability of predictive operational models needed in decision support is also demonstrated, by highlighting both strengths and weaknesses in a state-of-the-art ecosystem model designed for UK shelf waters. 相似文献

Tephras provide one of the most reliable methods of time control and synchronisation within Quaternary sequences. We report on the identification of two widespread rhyolitic tephras – the Kawakawa and Rangitawa tephras – preserved in extensive peat deposits on Chatham Island ~900 km east of New Zealand. The tephras, both products of supereruptions from the Taupo Volcanic Zone, occur as pale, fine‐ash dominated layers typically 10–150 mm thick. Mineralogically they are dominated by rhyolitic glass, together with subordinate amounts of quartz, feldspar, hypersthene, hornblende, Fe–Ti oxides and zircon. Phlogopite/biotite was identified additionally in Rangitawa Tephra. Ages for each tephra were obtained via mineralogical and major element glass composition‐based correlation with well‐dated equivalent deposits on mainland New Zealand, and we also obtained a new zircon fission‐track age for Rangitawa Tephra (350 ± 50 ka) on Chatham Island. Both tephras were erupted at critical times for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions in the New Zealand region: the Kawakawa at ca. 27 cal. ka, near the beginning of the ‘extended’ LGM early in marine isotope stage (MIS) 2; and the Rangitawa at ca. 350 ka near the end of MIS 10. The time constraints provided by the tephras demonstrate that Chatham Island peats contain long‐distance pollen derived from mainland New Zealand, which provides a reliable proxy for identifying glacial–interglacial climate conditions, in this case during the MIS 11–10 and MIS 2–1 cycles. The two tephras thus provide important chronostratigraphic tie‐points that facilitate correlation and synchronisation not only across the Quaternary deposits of the Chatham Islands group but also with climatically significant terrestrial and marine records in the wider New Zealand region. A finite element approach is used to assess the transient stability of excavation in elasto-plastic soils. Stability is shown to be a function of the rate of excavation, the soil permeability and the drainage path lengths. Sequential excavation has been modelled rigorously in the finite element analysis, together with the transient effects through a fully coupled Biot formulation. Results are presented which demonstrate the effects of the rate of excavation and permeability on stability. Both drained and undrained behaviour of the problem are retrieved as special cases of the transient analysis, and comparisons made with classical solutions where available. 相似文献
