The use of ultrasonic anemometers under cloudy weather conditions is often doubted, even rejected or not discussed in the literature. To investigate the influence of liquid water content on the behaviour of sonic anemometers a small intercomparison experiment using an ultrasonic anemometer, a fast response propeller anemometer, and a Particulate Volume Monitor was performed at the German Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus near the top of Mt. Zugspitze. The results obtained under different conditions (dry/cloudy) give no significant hint on such an influence. 相似文献

Double-layered structures found over the Baltic Sea are investigated using radiosoundings and lidar measurements. Situations with double-layer structures are also simulated with the regional model REMO in a realistic manner. The double layer consists of two adjacent well-mixed layers, with a sharp inversion in between.Results from radiosoundings show that the double-layer structure over the Baltic Sea mainly occurs during the autumn with thermally unstable stratification near the surface. The structure is present in about 50 % of the radiosoundings performed during autumn. The presence of the double-layer structure cannot be related to any specific wind direction, wind speed or sea surface temperature.The lidar measurements give a more continuous picture of the time evolution of the double-layer structure, and show that the top of the lower layer is not a rigid lid for vertical transport. Two possible explanations of the double-layer structure are given, (i) the structure is caused by `advection' of land boundary-layer air over the convective marine boundary layer or, (ii) by development of Sc clouds in weak frontal zones connected to low pressure systems. —We have examined the effect of surface contamination on the attenuation and stiffness of compressional seismic waves in artificial cylindrical glass cracks that are partially saturated with water. The compression of the gap perpendicularly to its plane reduces the gap volume and forces the water to redistribute within the gap (conservation of volume of an incompressible liquid). On clean surfaces, the water can flow without significant resistance across the glass. This leads to a very low and almost constant attenuation over a wide frequency range (approx. 3 mHz to 10 Hz), while the sample stiffness is constant. In the case of propanol contaminated surfaces, both the attenuation and the stiffness are considerably higher than in the clean case, and display a considerable frequency dependence. Both effects can be explained with the Restricted Meniscus Motion Model. In this model, the redistribution of the liquid in the gap first leads to a change (increase) of the contact angle. The change of the meniscus curvature results in an increase of the pressure in the liquid and thus to a stiffening of the sample. When the resistive force, that prevents the contact line from sliding along the surface, is finally overcome, the contact line starts moving across the contaminated surface. The motion against the resistive force dissipates energy and increases the attenuation. The calculated data are in good agreement for both the clean and the contaminated case; the model parameters fall in the range that was established by independent experiments (e.g. ). 相似文献

Various methods (or recipes) have been proposed to predict future solar activity levels – with mixed success. Among these, some precursor methods based upon quantities determined around or a few years before solar minimum have provided rather high correlations with the strength of the following cycles. Recently, data assimilation with an advection-dominated (flux-transport) dynamo model has been proposed as a predictive tool, yielding remarkably high correlation coefficients. After discussing the potential implications of these results and the criticism that has been raised, we study the possible physical origin(s) of the predictive skill provided by precursor and other methods. It is found that the combination of the overlap of solar cycles and their amplitude-dependent rise time (Waldmeier's rule) introduces correlations in the sunspot number (or area) record, which account for the predictive skill of many precursor methods. This explanation requires no direct physical relation between the precursor quantity and the dynamo mechanism (in the sense of the Babcock-Leighton scheme or otherwise). In this paper we report on a series of replicated tracer experiments with deuterium conducted under controlled, steady stormflow conditions at the Gårdsjön G1 catchment in south‐western Sweden. In five different years, these experiments were carried out in a subcatchment of G1. Deuterium was applied as a narrow pulse so that distributions of water transit times could be directly inferred from the observed tracer breakthrough curves. Significantly different transit times of water were observed under similar experimental conditions. Coefficients of variation for estimated mean transit times were greater than 60%, which can be understood as a measure of the interannual variability for this type of experiments. The climate of the South China Sea is dominated by the East Asian monsoon (EAM) system. Existing paleoclimate reconstructions offered an excellent insight into longer-term EAM variations. However, due to a lack of appropriate high-resolution paleoclimate data, relatively little is known about the frequency and strength of EAM extremes during the Holocene. To evaluate and establish a potential proxy archive for past variations of the EAM on shorter time-scales, we have carried out a calibration study on shells of the bivalve mollusk, Paphia undulata (Born 1778) from Daya Bay, China. This species has a short lifespan (3 years). Shells grow uninterruptedly between February/March and mid-November and are formed near oxygen isotopic (δ18O) equilibrium with the ambient environment. Shell growth patterns, δ18Oshell and δ13Cshell values, can be used to estimate the relative amount of precipitation and terrestrial runoff. Therefore, shells of this species can provide reliable, sub-seasonally resolved data on past East Asian summer monsoon strengths. The feasibility of this method has been tested with two Holocene shells from sediment cores taken from the nearby Beibu Gulf. A rather peculiar finding is that shell growth of P. undulata seems to be largely uncoupled to measured local environmental variables. Growth rates are negatively correlated to seawater temperature and chlorophyll a levels and positively to salinity. It is hypothesized here that extraordinary fast shell growth in early spring (February/March; low temperature and primary productivity) are facilitated by preserved energy resources, ensuring that the bivalve quickly reaches the predation window and the required size for reproduction. 相似文献

Single-frequency single-site VTEC retrieval using the NeQuick2 ray tracer for obliquity factor determination 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A single-frequency single-site GPS/Galileo algorithm for retrieval of absolute total electron content is implemented. A single-layer approximation of the ionosphere is used for data modeling. In addition to a standard mapping function, the NeQuick model (version 2) of the ionosphere is now applied to derive improved mapping functions. This model is very attractive for this purpose, because it implements a ray tracer. We compare the new algorithm with the old one using an effective global height of the ionosphere of 450 km. Combined IGS IONEX gridded data sets serve as reference data. On global average, we find a small improvement of 1 % in precision (standard deviation) of the NeQuick2 mapping method versus the conventional approach on global average. A site-by-site comparison indicates an improvement in the precision for 34 % of the 44 sites under investigation. The level of improvement for these stations is 0.5 TECU on average. No improvement was observed for 41 % of the sites. Further comparisons of the single (code ranges and carrier phases) versus dual-frequency (carrier phases only) single site algorithm show that dual-frequency VTEC estimation is more accurate for the majority of the stations, but only in the range of 0.3 TECU (2.6 %) in average. 相似文献
