An observational analysis of boundary layer moisture evolution during the dryline on 22 May 2002 is presented. This dryline occurred during the International H2O Project (IHOP) and was well observed by a variety of instruments at the intensive observing region (IOR), Homestead site. Although the observed strong upward air motion and the well-mixed boundary layer favored convection, the dryline did not trigger a convective storm. Several operational and research forecast models predicted deep convection at the IOR. High spatial and temporal resolution observational data from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) lidar instruments, Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI), sounding profiles and simulation results are used to investigate the role of moisture during this dryline. It is hypothesized that in addition to convection and lifting, abundant, deep and persistent moisture is required for a dryline to trigger convection. The possible reason why the dryline failed to trigger convection over the IOR is discussed.  相似文献

This is one of a series of papers on the Askervein Hill Project. It presents results on the variations in mean wind speed at fixed heights (z) above the ground from linear arrays of anemometer posts and towers. Most of the data are for z = 10 m but some are for z = 3 m. Selected and directionally grouped data from the 55 Mean Flow runs are presented together with mean flow data from Askervein '83 Turbulence runs. Comparisons are made between the data and guideline estimates of fractional speed-up ratio at hilltop locations and between the data and MS3DJH/3 model predictions along the tower lines. There is good agreement in most cases.  相似文献

Fossil diatom assemblages in a sediment core from a small lake in Central Kamchatka (Russia) were used to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental conditions of the late Holocene. The waterbody may be a kettle lake that formed on a moraine of the Two-Yurts Lake Valley, located on the eastern slope of the Central Kamchatka Mountain Chain. At present, it is a seepage lake with no surficial outflow. Fossil diatom assemblages show an almost constant ratio between planktonic and periphytic forms throughout the record. Downcore variations in the relative abundances of diatom species enabled division of the core into four diatom assemblage zones, mainly related to changes in abundances of Aulacoseira subarctica, Stephanodiscus minutulus, and Discostella pseudostelligera and several benthic species. Associated variations in the composition and content of organic matter are consistent with the diatom stratigraphy. The oldest recovered sediments date to about 3220 BC. They lie below a sedimentation hiatus and likely include reworked deposits from nearby Two-Yurts Lake. The initial lake stage between 870 and 400 BC was characterized by acidic shallow-water conditions. Between 400 BC and AD 1400, lacustrine conditions were established, with highest contributions from planktonic diatoms. The interval between AD 1400 and 1900 might reflect summer cooling during the Little Ice Age, indicated by diatoms that prefer strong turbulence, nutrient recycling and cooler summer conditions. The timing of palaeolimnological changes generally fits the pattern of neoglacial cooling during the late Holocene on Kamchatka and in the neighbouring Sea of Okhotsk, mainly driven by the prevailing modes of regional atmospheric circulation.  相似文献

Abstract

Arctic haze has been attributed to industrial pollution released at mid‐latitudes. Our current understanding has been pieced together from routine meteorological data, ground‐based air chemistry observations and limited aircraft measurements. This study investigates the relationship between synoptic boundary‐layer meteorology and the composition of the near‐surface atmosphere during the polar sunrise at Alert, N.W.T. A secondary objective is to characterize the influence of local activity on the atmospheric composition at a site for a new baseline monitoring station and at a location where aerosol chemistry and grab‐flask samples for CO2 have been made for many years. Detailed measurements of the vertical distribution of aerosols were obtained from an upward‐looking lidar to complement the ground‐based measurements. Meteorological profiles of the near‐surface boundary layer were obtained from both free‐flying and tethered balloons. Near‐surface measurements were made of aerosol physical and chemical properties, O3, NO2, NO/NOx, Peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) and hydrocarbons.

The study period was characterized by prolonged periods with strong surface inversions, which were broken up occasionally by intrusions of cold air into the warmer air aloft. Lidar observations showed that ice crystals often accompanied aerosols and were responsible for reducing visibility below 30–40 km. There was a strong correlation between aerosol mass in the diameter size range 0.15 to 1.5 μm and total SO4 = . PAN found at concentrations of about 200 ppt(v) was the main carrier of atmospheric nitrogen. Aerosol trace elements were divisible into anthropogenic soil, mixed soil/anthropogenic sea salt and halogens. Vertical transport in the surface boundary layer, as regulated by the strength of the surface radiation inversion, may play an important role in influencing the chemical composition of the air at the ground. The location of the new baseline monitoring laboratory was found to be generally windier and warmer than the lower altitude weather station, and the influence of local activity was found to be minimal.  相似文献

An a priori, analytical model in system identification of vibrating structures is improved by input and output measurements with least square fitting. The structure is modelled by the finite element method. Finite element models usually need a large number of degrees of freedom to simulate a small number of lower spectrum eigenfrequencies with accuracy. The large finite element model is reduced to a subspace of significant eigenfrequencies. The size of the subspace is chosen with regard to the frequency content of the measured data and the accuracy of the large analytical model. An identification method is formulated for the large analytical model. This procedure improves system parameters in the matrices of the large model by measured input and output data with a least square functional. The objective function is consistently reduced, so that the whole identification procedure can be performed in the small subspace. The proposed reduction method permits very large and accurate analytical models to be used, and it decreases the computational cost of the identification procedure significantly. The computational efficiency is demonstrated on an in situ experiment of a radar tower.  相似文献

Concerns about the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus have motivated many discussions regarding new approaches for managing water, energy and food resources. Despite the progress in recent years, there remain many challenges in scientific research on the WEF nexus, while implementation as a management tool is just beginning. The scientific challenges are primarily related to data, information and knowledge gaps in our understanding of the WEF inter-linkages. Our ability to untangle the WEF nexus is also limited by the lack of systematic tools that could address all the trade-offs involved in the nexus. Future research needs to strengthen the pool of information. It is also important to develop integrated software platforms and tools for systematic analysis of the WEF nexus. The experience made in integrated water resources management in the hydrological community, especially in the framework of Panta Rhei, is particularly well suited to take a lead in these advances.  相似文献

Holocene palaeolimnological conditions were reconstructed by analysing fossil diatom assemblages within a lacustrine sediment core from Lake Sokoch, southern Kamchatka (Russia). Sediments of this proglacial lake cover the past 9400 years and hence represent almost the whole Holocene history. The biosiliceous muddy sample material was analysed for several geochemical and biological parameters, such as the total organic carbon and biogenic silica content, and the diatom community (quantitative and qualitative changes). Based on changes in the relative abundances of the most frequent species Aulacoseira subarctica, Staurosira martyi and Stephanodiscus alpinus and a depth‐constrained cluster analyses (CONISS), five diatom assemblage zones could be identified. The oldest stage recovered lies between 9400 and 9000 cal. a BP and reflects the initial lake stage after the retreat of local glaciers, with a high detrital sediment supply, shallow‐water conditions and a high diatom diversity. The next zone (9000–6200 cal. a BP) shows a more mature lake system with accumulating biogenic remains and higher water levels during climate amelioration. This is followed by the most obvious change in the diatom assemblage, delineated by an occurrence of S. alpinus, between 6200 and 2700 cal. a BP. Wet conditions in spring probably led to an enhanced fluvial runoff and eutrophic to hypertrophic conditions. The end of this period might reflect climate deterioration related to the Neoglacial epoch of the Holocene. Between 2700 and 1600 cal. a BP the sediments of Lake Sokoch reveal oligotrophic water conditions in a windy high‐energy environment. The youngest interval, between 1600 cal. a BP and the Present, indicates shallow‐water conditions and a very short growing season, which might reflect the Little Ice Age. The results may offer a baseline for the interpretation of Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes in Kamchatka and their relation to regional climate change from a palaeoecological perspective.  相似文献
