This paper critically discusses Samuel Huntington's contribution to development studies. Long before his currently debated work on the clash of civilizations, Huntington wrote on the political order in changing societies. In this highly influential book of the late 1960s he argued on the basis of modernization theory for strong governments to accompany the inevitable and universal process of modernization. His clash of civilizations seems to argue from different assumptions. It insists on the essential differences between cultures based on religion. These cultural differences would now give rise to the most important conflict constellations. In his earlier and later work Huntington insists on the primacy of Western values and the need to defend them. The author critiques the assumptions, concepts and some of the empirical evidence of Huntingtons recent study.  相似文献

Late Pleistocene and Holocene vegetational and climatic change have been studied palynologically at a site at 1750 m elevation in the subandean vegetation belt near Popayán, in the southern Colombian Andes. Time control on the pollen record is based on six AMS 14C ages, ranging from possibly Middle Pleniglacial time (around 50000 yr BP) to 1092 ± 44 yr BP. Because of the presence of two hiatuses only the Middle Pleniglacial and Late Holocene periods (the last 2300 yr BP) are represented. Pollen data indicate the presence of closed subandean forest during glacial time. Changes in the contribution of pollen originating from the uppermost and lowermost subandean forest belts, changes in the contribution of a number of other subandean forest taxa, and changes in species composition between the three pollen zones, suggest that the climate during the Middle Pleniglacial was markedly colder, and perhaps also wetter, than during the Late Holocene. Pollen assemblages from the Late Holocene indicate that the landscape has been affected by deforestation and agriculture since at least 2300 yr BP, but that human impact decreased in the last 780 yr BP. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Der Transport radioaktiver Aerosol-Partikel durch die Atmosphäre wirft neue meteorologische Probleme auf. Eine kinematische Methode der Vorhersage von Trajektorien zeigt erhebliche Unterschiede gegenüber den Stromlinien. Die Ausbreitung von Partikelwolken ist eine Funktion der Vektorstreuung des Windfeldes und einem von der Zeit abhängigen Parameter. Der Massenaustausch zwischen der Troposphäre und der viel partikelreicheren Stratosphäre vollzieht sich vorwiegend in horizontaler Richtung im Niveau der Strahlströmungen. Einige Besonderheiten der Stratosphäre über dem tropischen Pazifik werden kurz beschrieben: die Aufspaltung der Tropopause über dem Äquator und die großen zeitlichen Änderungen der zonalen Windströmungen. Während die Gravitation und das Auswaschen durch Niederschläge vorwiegend gröbere Partikel (Durchmesser>2) zur Sedimentation bringen, fällt die Koagulation an Wolkenelementen hauptsächlich die kleinsten Partikel (<0.1 ) aus.
Summary The transport of radioactive particulate matter by the atmosphere introduces new meteorological problems. A kinematical method of forecasting air trajectories demonstrates substantial differences compared with stream-lines. The spread of particle clouds can be derived from the standard vector deviation of winds and a time-dependent parameter. Between the troposphere and the stratosphere with its much higher concentration of particles, the mass exchange occurs mainly in a horizontal direction near the jet-stream level. Some pecularities of the stratosphere above the Tropical Pacific are shortly described: the splitting of the tropopause above the equator, and the large time-variations of the zonal currents. While particles with a diameter of at least 2 micron are mainly deposited by gravitation and rain scavenging, coagulation with cloud droplets prefers particles below 0.1 micron.

Zusammenfassung Im westlichen Rheingaugebirge, am Südrand des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges, wurde durch kleintektonische und gefügekundliche Methoden der tektonische Großbau untersucht. Die vom nördlichen Schiefergebirge abweichende Fazies und die Nähe der Mitteldeutschen Schwelle beeinflußten das tektonische Bild des durch seinen Vergenzfächer, Abscherfaltungen, Schuppen und Achsenwölbungen charakterisierten Gebirges. - Eine strukturchronologische Gliederung zeigt die Persistenz der Bewegungen in den alten z.T. geosynklinalen Schwächezonen.  相似文献

Within the framework of the Tropospheric Research Programme (TFS) four working groups in Germany (University of Stuttgart, University of Cologne, Research Center Karlsruhe, German Weather Service) formed a network developing a model system for chemistry transport calculations on different scales. The network was optimized, based on each module and combined for the different interfaces in order to perform daily preoperational ozone forecasts and its precursors at the German Weather Service in summer 1999 (May through September). The setup of the model system, the interfaces and changes of each module are described. The results of the whole preoperational episode are displayed and discussed. Main efforts were done analyzing the model climate statistics and the verification of the predictions with an extensive data base of observations at stations in Germany. The results of this extensive verification demonstrate the relatively good performance of the entire forecast system.  相似文献

The transfer of fluid and trace elements from the slab to the mantle wedge cannot be adequately explained by simple models of slab devolatilization. The eclogite-facies mélange belt of northern New Caledonia represents previously subducted oceanic crust and contains a significant proportion of talc and chlorite schists associated with serpentinite. These rocks host large quantities of H2O and CO2 and may transport volatiles to deep levels in subduction zones. The bulk-rock and stable isotope compositions of talc and chlorite schist and serpentinite indicate that the serpentinite was formed by seawater alteration of oceanic lithosphere prior to subduction, whereas the talc and chlorite schists were formed by fluid-induced metasomatism of a mélange of mafic, ultramafic and metasedimentary rocks during subduction. In subduction zones, dehydration of talc and chlorite schists should occur at sub-arc depths and at significantly higher temperatures (∼ 800°C) than other lithologies (400–650°C). Fluids released under these conditions could carry high trace-element contents and may trigger partial melting of adjacent pelitic and mafic rocks, and hence may be vital for transferring volatile and trace elements to the source regions of arc magmas. In contrast, these hybrid rocks are unlikely to undergo significant decarbonation during subduction and so may be important for recycling carbon into the deep mantle. BVRI photometry of 107 TNOs and Centaurs establishes the range of spectral gradients to be between –5 to 55%/100 nm (with one exception). A cluster of very red Cubewanos is firmly identified in orbits of low inclination and eccentricity beyond 40 AU from the Sun. Further correlations between surface colours and dynamical parameters (inclination and perihelion distance) are suggested for Cubewanos and scattered disk objects, but lack complete confidence for their reality. Plutinos and Centaurs do not show any clear correlation between surface colours and orbital parameters. We present in this paper 12 spectra obtained in the visible region and nine of them for which we obtained also near infrared spectra up to 2.4 microns. A few other objects have been observed, but the data are still under reduction and analysis. The principal reported results obtained are: (i) a wide range of visible slopes; (ii) evidence for surface variations on 2001 PT13; and (iii) possible detection of few percent of water ice (1999 TC36}, 2000 EB173, 1999 DE9, 2001 PT13, 2000 QC243, 1998 SG35).  相似文献

Complementary geochemical and stable isotope investigations of the Gorski Kotar karst aquifer system in western Croatia were obtained for the first time, to answer the question whether both studied rivers drain the same aquifer system or not. The two main rivers, the Kupa and the Rje?ina, rise under the same mountain range, but belong to two different watersheds (Black Sea and Adriatic Sea). The karst aquifer of Gorski Kotar is a potentially important source of drinking water for two neighboring countries, Croatia and Slovenia (Central and South Europe), and is strongly influenced by both Mediterranean and continental weather conditions. It is a part of the Dinaric karst, which is “locus typicus” for karst worldwide and one of the most typical karst areas in the world.  相似文献
