Ilmenite is one of the common kimberlitic indicator minerals recovered during diamond exploration, and its distinction from non-kimberlitic rock types is important. This is particularly true for regions where these minerals are present in relatively low abundance, and they are the dominant kimberlitic indicator mineral recovered. Difficulty in visually differentiating kimberlitic from non-kimberlitic ilmenite in exploration concentrates is also an issue, and distinguishing kimberlitic ilmenite from those derive from other similar rocks, such as ultramafic lamprophyres, is practically impossible. Ilmenite is also the indicator mineral whose compositional variety has the most potential to resolve provenance issues related to mineral dispersions with contributions from multiple kimberlite sources.
Various published data sets from selected kimberlitic (including kimberlites, lamproites, and various ultramafic lamprophyres) and non-kimberlitic rock types have been compiled and evaluated in terms of their major element compositions. Compositional fields and bounding reference lines for ilmenites derived from kimberlites (sensu stricto), ultramafic lamprophyres, and other non-kimberlitic rock types have been defined primarily on MgO–TiO2 graphs as well as MgO–Cr2O3 relationships. 相似文献

The exchange of NO3 radicals with the aqueous-phase was investigated at room temperature (293 K) in a series of wetted denuders. From these experiments, the uptake coefficient of NO3 was determined on 0.1 M NaCl solutions and was found to be (NO3) 2 × 10-3 in good agreement with recent studies. The Henry coefficient of NO3 was estimated to be KH(NO3) = 1.8 M · atm-1, with a (2) uncertainty of ±3 M · atm-1. From the upper limit for the Henry coefficient (KH = 5 M · atm-1) and available thermodynamic data, the redox potential of dissolved NO3/NO

is estimated to be in the range of 2.3 to 2.5 V. This range is at the lower boundary of earlier estimates. The results are discussed in the light of a recent publication. The low bioavailability of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) is one of the key sources of uncertainty in the implementation of in situ bioremediation. Bioavailability of HOCs in the subsurface is affected by sorption/desorption processes in two important ways. First, sorption causes high organic concentrations in microporous regions and impermeable zones to which bacterial access is obstructed. Second, because desorption and immobile zone diffusion must occur before biodegradation can proceed, the overall rate of bioremediation can be limited or even controlled by these mass transfer processes, not by the activity of the degrading microorganisms. Rate models that couple sorption/desorption—related mass transfer processes and biodegradation have been successfully applied to laboratory results and are beginning to offer some insight into the problem. Specifically, the influence of sorption on biodegradation is quantified here by defining a bioavailability factor, Bf . However, many questions remain and predictive modeling is elusive, especially in the context of complicated heterogeneous natural systems. Challenges facing environmental engineers are to develop a better understanding of these processes at both laboratory and field scales and ultimately to use such understanding toward the development of more effective and economical remediation technologies. 相似文献

This article offers an analysis of the emerging scalar configuration of the governance of the European Union. It discusses how European integration stands for a move from a collection of territorially homogenous systems of rule towards a new assemblage of territories, authorities and rights. The paper first questions the stretchy territoriality of the seemingly obvious European level. Second it analyses the sectoral differences in the evolution of the width and the depth of integration, measured as the transfer of competencies to the EU level between the Rome Treaty (1958) and the Lisbon Treaty (200y). The Earth's topography is shaped by surface processes that operate on various scales. In particular, river processes control landscape dynamics over large length scales, whereas hillslope processes control the dynamics over smaller length scales. This scale separation challenges numerical treatments of landscape evolution that use space discretization. Large grid spacing cannot account for the dynamics of water divides that control drainage area competition, and erosion rate and slope distribution. Small grid spacing that properly accounts for divide dynamics is computationally inefficient when studying large domains. Here we propose a new approach for landscape evolution modeling that couples irregular grid‐based numerical solutions for the large‐scale fluvial dynamics and continuum‐based analytical solutions for the small‐scale fluvial and hillslope dynamics. The new approach is implemented in the landscape evolution model DAC (divide and capture). The geometrical and topological characteristics of DAC's landscapes show compatibility with those of natural landscapes. A comparative study shows that, even with large grid spacing, DAC predictions fit well an analytical solution for divide migration in the presence of horizontal advection of topography. In addition, DAC is used to study some outstanding problems in landscape evolution. (i) The time to steady‐state is investigated and simulations show that steady‐state requires much more time to achieve than predicted by fixed area calculations, due to divides migration and persistent reorganization of low‐order streams. (ii) Large‐scale stream captures in a strike‐slip environment are studied and show a distinct pattern of erosion rates that can be used to identify recent capture events. (iii) Three tectono‐climatic mechanisms that can lead to asymmetric mountains are studied. Each of the mechanisms produces a distinct morphology and erosion rate distribution. Application to the Southern Alps of New Zealand suggests that tectonic advection, precipitation gradients and non‐uniform tectonic uplift act together to shape the first‐order topography of this mountain range. The world oceans and seas are experiencing a dramatic decline in their health and viability. In the midst of this crisis, the Norwegian fjords represent under-studied and highly vulnerable ecosystems. Fjord chemistry and fjord ecosystems are poorly studied given the current focus on polar ice melting, fish stock reductions and oil disasters. For this reason, this review sheds light on and aims to accumulate local and national findings concerning the current viability of the Sognefjord, the world's second longest fjord and Norway's longest and deepest fjord, stretching 205 km (127 miles) and reaching 1308 m below sea level as its deepest point. This review shows that there is a critical need to establish knowledge and parameters to better monitor and prevent an ecosystem catastrophe from developing in Norwegian fjords. The poor circulation in fjords compared to opens seas reduces their ability to circulate waste and transport fresh water from hydroelectricity plants. Because of fjord morphology, pollutants and heavy metals are potentially trapped within them at great depths for decades. The monitoring of Norwegian fjords is thus of fundamental importance. 相似文献

Asthemaintectoniccomponentofthe Himalayan–Tibetan orogen,the Lhasa terrane has received much attention as it records the entire history of the orogeny.The occurrence of high pressure eclogite in the Sumdo complex in central Lhasa terrane has a significant importance on the understanding of the Paleo-Tethys subduction and plate itineration processes in this area.The petrological,geochemical and geochronological data of eclogite and associated blueschist and garnet-bearing mica schist from Sumdo,Jilang and Bailang area have been briefly reviewed to explore the origin and metamorphic evolution of this suture.Eclogites from the Sumdo complex have experienced low temperature,high pressure to ultrahigh pressure metamorphism,revealing a fastsubduction and exhumation process in a typical oceanic subduction zone.The large P-T range between different eclogites in the literature may be affected by the big error of unappropriated using geothermobarometry and may also because of slices of subducted blocks derived from different depths juxtapose together during exhumation.By summarizing the U-Pb,Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd ages of eclogites,the eclogite facies metamorphism is likely to occur in early Triassic during 245-225 Ma,but not the previously accepted late Permian at ca.260 Ma by the reinterpretation of the former geochronological data from literature.The opening of Paleo-Tethys Ocean between the Lhasa terrane initiate prior to ca.280 Ma and ultimate closure to integrate the Lhasa terrane was no earlier than225 Ma and may triggered by the initial subduction of Bangong-Nujiang Tethys Ocean in the north. 相似文献
