Dissolved Fe, Mn and Al concentrations (dFe, dMn and dAl hereafter) in surface waters and the water column of the Northeast Atlantic and the European continental shelf are reported. Following an episode of enhanced Saharan dust inputs over the Northeast Atlantic Ocean prior and during the cruise in March 1998, surface concentrations were enhanced up to 4 nmol L− 1 dFe, 3 nmol L− 1 dMn and 40 nmol L− 1 dAl and returned to 0.6 nmol L− 1 dFe, 0.5 nmol L− 1 dMn and 10 nmol L− 1 dAl towards the end of the cruise three weeks later. A simple steady state model (MADCOW, [Measures, C.I., Brown, E.T., 1996. Estimating dust input to the Atlantic Ocean using surface water aluminium concentrations. In: Guerzoni. S. and Chester. R. (Eds.), The impact of desert dust across the Mediterranean, Kluwer Academic Publishers, The Netherlands, pp. 301–311.]) was used which relies on surface ocean dAl as a proxy for atmospheric deposition of mineral dust. We estimated dust input at 1.8 g m− 2 yr− 1 (range 1.0–2.9 g m− 2 yr− 1) and fluxes of dFe, dMn and dAl were inferred. Mixed layer steady state residence times for dissolved metals were estimated at 1.3 yr for dFe (range 0.3–2.9 yr) and 1.9 yr for dMn (range 1.0–3.8 yr). The dFe residence time may have been overestimated and it is shown that 0.2–0.4 yr is probably more realistic. Using vertical dFe versus Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) relationships as well as a biogeochemical two end member mixing model, regenerative Fe:C ratios were estimated respectively to be 20 ± 6 and 22 ± 5 μmol Fe:mol C. Combining the atmospheric flux of dFe to the upper water column with the latter Fe:C ratio, a ‘new iron’ supported primary productivity of only 15% (range 7%–56%) was deduced. This would imply that 85% (range 44–93%) of primary productivity could be supported by regenerated dFe. The open ocean surface data suggest that the continental shelf is probably not a major source of dissolved metals to the surface of the adjacent open ocean. Continental shelf concentrations of dMn, dFe, and to a lesser extent dAl, were well correlated with salinity and express mixing of a fresher continental end member with Atlantic Ocean water flowing onto the shelf. Temporal trends in mercury concentrations ([Hg]) during the last two to three decades were determined in liver of shorthorn sculpin, ringed seal and Atlantic walrus from northwest Greenland (NWG, 77 degrees N) and in liver of shorthorn sculpin and ringed seal from central west Greenland (CWG, 69 degrees N) during the last decade. Stable-nitrogen (delta(15)N) and carbon (delta(13)C) isotope values were determined in muscle of ringed seals to provide insight into potential trophic level changes through time. Log-linear regressions on annual median [Hg] did not reveal any temporal trend in shorthorn sculpin from CWG and NWG and walrus from NWG. In ringed seals from NWG, an increase in [Hg] of 7.8% per year was observed. When based on delta(15)N-adjusted [Hg] this rate increased to 8.5% but was still non-significant. In ringed seal from CWG no trend was found in [Hg] during the period 1994-2004. However, during the last part of the period (1999-2004) the [Hg] increased significantly. Including tissue delta(15)N values as a covariate had a marked effect on these results. The annual changes in delta(15)N-adjusted [Hg] was estimated to -5.0% for the whole period and 2.2% during the last 5 years compared to -1.3% and 12.4%, respectively, for the non-adjusted [Hg]. 相似文献

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite, launched on 17 March 2009, is designed to measure the Earth’s mean gravity field with unprecedented accuracy at spatial resolutions down to 100?km. The accurate calibration of the gravity gradiometer on-board GOCE is of utmost importance for achieving the mission goals. ESA’s baseline method for the calibration uses star sensor and accelerometer data of a dedicated calibration procedure, which is executed every 2?months. In this paper, we describe a method for monitoring the evolution of calibration parameter during that time. The method works with star sensor and accelerometer data and does not require gravity field models, which distinguishes it from other existing methods. We present time series of calibration parameters estimated from GOCE data from 1 November 2009 to 17 May 2010. The time series confirm drifts in the calibration parameters that are present in the results of other methods, including ESA’s baseline method. Although these drifts are very small, they degrade the gravity gradients, leading to the conclusion that the calibration parameters of the ESA’s baseline method need to be linearly interpolated. Further, we find a correction of ?36 × 10?6 for one calibration parameter (in-line differential scale factor of the cross-track gradiometer arm), which improves the gravity gradient performance. The results are validated by investigating the trace of the calibrated gravity gradients and comparing calibrated gravity gradients with reference gradients computed along the GOCE orbit using the ITG-Grace-2010s gravity field model. 相似文献

Isotope evolution in a differentiated (crust and upper mantle) and chemically heterogeneous Earth has been computed for a model with isotopic exchange between crust and mantle at an exponentially decreasing rate. To simulate the effects of subduction, cells of crust and mantle are selected at random, their contents mixed and then redistributed into the cells from which they came—to give new chemically heterogeneous but momentarily isotopically homogeneous systems. Daughter isotopes in each cell grow according to equations appropriate for closed chemical systems. Rock age distributions and isotopic data created by the computer calculation mimic nature. Pb isotope data changes through geologic time are illustrated to demonstrate that two-stage interpretations applied to Pb data for rocks with complex histories may be misleading. The intercept of the Pb ore growth curve and regressions fit to Pb data gives minimum values only for the duration of heterogeneous systems, not the time when heterogeneous distribution first occurred. An intercept derived time of about 3 b.y., in the Pb system is shown to be quantitatively compatible with an average age of crustal rocks of 1.5 b.y. and with a constant degree of chemical heterogeneity for all of Earth history. 相似文献

The Gutenberg-Richter relation, which means that the number of earthquakes within a given magnitude interval is an exponential function of the magnitude, is considered almost as a law in seismology. In many cases the relation is not very evident but only for relatively narrow magnitude intervals. It is more like a rule that a dual behaviour exists. Further the frequency-magnitude diagrams are often so scattered that it is difficult to get any clear pattern and by using cumulated frequencies we have a great smoothing of the data, which increases the linearity of the logarithmic number-magnitude behaviour. In the present paper we have as an example studied three selected subregions of the Fennoscandian area, principally comprising the following regions: southwestern Norway, northern Norway, northeastern Sweden and northern Finland. We have found that the log-M relationship may be interpreted as a normal distribution of magnitudes as well as the generally assumed exponential one. 相似文献

Although not considered for the first generation of European Galileo satellites, the use of C-Band frequencies for navigation purposes may be taken into account for a future generation of Galileo. For this reason, a frequency band of 20 MHz bandwidth (5,010–5,030 MHz) has been allocated in the course of the World Radio Communications Conference 2000 held in Istanbul, Turkey. The use of C-Band navigation signals offers both advantages and drawbacks. One example is the ionospheric path delay which is inversely proportional to the (squared) carrier frequency and is therefore significantly smaller at C-Band. On the other hand, the use of C-Band frequencies results in increased attenuation effects such as free space loss or rainfall attenuation. It is therefore necessary to provide a detailed analysis of the effects of C-Band frequencies on the navigation process. In order to assess the feasibility of using C-Band frequencies, various aspects of signal propagation and satellite signal tracking at C-Band are examined in the context of this article. In particular, aspects like free space loss, atmospheric effects, foliage attenuation, code and carrier tracking performance, code noise, phase noise and multipath are discussed with respect to their performance at C-Band. In order to allow comparison with the current GPS system, the performance at C-Band is compared to the L-Band performance under similar or identical conditions. The results of this analysis will finally be discussed with respect to their impact on satellite payload and receiver design.

The behavior of dissolved Hf in the marine environment is not well understood due to the lack of direct seawater measurements of Hf isotopes and the limited number of Hf isotope time-series obtained from ferromanganese crusts. In order to place better constraints on input sources and develop further applications, a combined Nd-Hf isotope time-series study of five Pacific ferromanganese crusts was carried out. The samples cover the past 38 Myr and their locations range from sites at the margin of the ocean to remote areas, sites from previously unstudied North and South Pacific areas, and water depths corresponding to deep and bottom waters.For most of the samples a broad coupling of Nd and Hf isotopes is observed. In the Equatorial Pacific εNd and εHf both decrease with water depth. Similarly, εNd and εHf both increase from the South to the North Pacific. These data indicate that the Hf isotopic composition is, in general terms, a suitable tracer for ocean circulation, since inflow and progressive admixture of bottom water is clearly identifiable.The time-series data indicate that inputs and outputs have been balanced throughout much of the late Cenozoic. A simple box model can constrain the relative importance of potential input sources to the North Pacific. Assuming steady state, the model implies significant contributions of radiogenic Nd and Hf from young circum-Pacific arcs and a subordinate role of dust inputs from the Asian continent for the dissolved Nd and Hf budget of the North Pacific.Some changes in ocean circulation that are clearly recognizable in Nd isotopes do not appear to be reflected by Hf isotopic compositions. At two locations within the Pacific Ocean a decoupling of Nd and Hf isotopes is found, indicating limited potential for Hf isotopes as a stand-alone oceanographic tracer and providing evidence of additional local processes that govern the Hf isotopic composition of deep water masses. In the case of the Southwest Pacific there is evidence that decoupling may have been the result of changes in weathering style related to the buildup of Antarctic glaciation. 相似文献
