The relations between the volume transport and the sea level difference across the Tsushima Straits have been investigated using current data provided by ADCP mounted on the ferry Camellia, plying between Hakata and Pusan. Empirical formulas to deduce the volume transports using the sea level differences across the eastern and western channels are proposed, considering the seasonal variation of the vertical current structure. The interannual variation of volume transport through the Tsushima Straits for 37 years from 1965 to 2001 is estimated using the empirical formulas. The total volume transport through the Tsushima Straits, averaged for 37 years, is 2.60 Sv and those of the eastern and western channels are 1.13 Sv and 1.47 Sv, respectively. The total volume transport through the Tsushima Straits tends to decrease with a roughly 15 year variation until 1992, then begins to increase. 相似文献

This study was undertaken to investigate the implication of geoacoustic behaviors in the shallow marine sediments associated with the changes in geotechnical index properties. Two piston cores (270 cm and 400 cm in core length) used in this study were recovered from stations 1 and 2, the western continental margin, the East Sea. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to illustrate the effects of microstructure on shear properties. The direct SEM observation of sediment fabrics is inevitable to understand the correlation of the changes in geoacoustic properties to the sediment structure. The consolidation of sediments by overburden stress resulting in the clay fabric alteration appears to play an important role in changing shear properties. Water contents and porosity of sediments gradually decreases with increasing depth, whereas wet bulk density shows a reverse trend. It is interesting to note that shear wave velocities increase rapidly from 8 to 20 m/s while compressional wave velocities significantly fluctuate, ranging from 1450 to 1550 m/s with depth. The fabric changes in sediment with increasing depth for example, uniform grain size and well oriented clay fabrics may cause the shear strength increase from 1 to 12 kPa. Shear wave velocity is, therefore, shown to be very sensitive to the changes in undrained strength for unconsolidated marine sediments. This study estimates a realistic change of the Japan Sea by assimilating satellite measurements into an eddy-resolving circulation
model. Suboptimal but feasible assimilation schemes of approximate filtering and nudging play essential roles in the system.
The sequential update of error covariance significantly outperforms the asymptotic covariance in the sequential assimilation
due to the irregular sampling patterns from multiple altimeter satellites. The best estimates show an average rms difference

The bimodality of the Kuroshio path is studied numerically with a barotropic inflow-outflow model. The dynamics that determines the path depends on the Rossby number,Ro (proportional to inlet velocity) and the Reynolds number (representing effects of viscosity). At lowRo (<Ro
1) only a meander path occurs, while at highRo(Ro
2) only a straight path is developed. Between these critical values (Ro
1RoRo2) either of the two paths can occur (multiple states), and the choice of path is determined by its history. Increase (decrease) inRo acrossRo

1) leads to catastrophic transition from one path to the other. In the intermediate range (Ro
1RoRo2), the straight path is conditionally unstable to finite amplitude disturbances, and abrupt changes to the meander path take place. Absolute vorticity is almost conserved along the meander path, while along the straight path it is dissipated in large amount near the coast. At low Re, the flow tends to a viscous flow, and steady states are obtained. At highRe, time variations with different periods for the meander and straight paths become dominant. We investigated the seasonal variability of free alkaline phosphatase activity in seawater and alkaline phosphatase hydrolysable
phosphorus (APHP) at 3 stations in Hiroshima Bay using alkaline phosphatase extracted from the dinoflagellates Alexandrium
tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum. The dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) was lower than 1 μM in all samples; the lowest
values were in May. The amount of APHP was high at the surface and bottom waters of all stations in May, showing DIP-depleted
conditions. In August and November, the amount of APHP was much less than the amount of APHP in May, indicating that the availability
of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) for these species was low and/or uptake during the dinoflagellate blooming might have
occurred in the area. The results obtained from short-term variations of AP activity might suggest that the growth of dinoflagellates

Behavior of warm water flowing into a model ocean with flat bottom filled with cold water is investigated numerically with a three-dimensional level model in a rotating system.The warm water which flows through the southern opening into the ocean is found to progress in two directions. The east front of the warm water progresses along the east coast and reaches the northern opening. And an eastern boundary current associated with this density structure is formed. The west front progresses along the west coast with the speed much less than that of the eastside front. However, the progression of the west front slows down remarkably half way between the southern and northern boundaries due to-effect, and a baroclinic western boundary current system is formed. Unstable waves whose scales are 200–400 km are found in the region of the eastern boundary current and propagate toward the west. These waves seem to be caused by the baroclinic instability.The boundary currents obtained in the present model are considered to represent some characteristics of the Tsushima Current system in the Japan Sea. 相似文献

Freshwater concentrations confirm the pristine character of the Lena River environment as already pointed-out in a previous study with a limited set of data (Martin et al., 1993). Total dissolved concentrations of the freshwater are 13.8 ± 1.6 nM, Cu, 4.4 ± 0.1 nM, Ni, 0.054 ± 0.047 nM, Cd, 642 ± 208 nM, Fe, 0.2–0.3 nM Pb and 1.2 ± 1.0 nM, Zn. For Zn and Pb, a simple mixing of the Lena River waters with the Arctic waters is observed. Relationships with salinity suggest that for Cu, Ni and Cd, there is a mobilization of the dissolved fraction from the suspended matter, with an increase of the dissolved concentration of 1.5, 3 and 6 times, respectively. For Fe, the total dissolved concentrations follow an exponential decrease in the mixing zone and 80% of the total “dissolved” Fe is removed from the solution. For Cu, Ni, Cd and Fe, the riverine end-members are 20 nM, 12 nM, 0.3 nM and 47 nM, respectively. When considering the input of total dissolved metals to the Arctic Ocean, the fraction attributed to the freshwaters from the Arctic rivers appears to be small (4% of the input of dissolved metal to the Arctic Ocean for Cd, 27% for Cu, 11 % for Ni and 2% for Zn). Metal concentrations in the Laptev Sea and Arctic Ocean are very similar, indicating a generally homogeneous distribution in the areas sampled. 相似文献

South Korean immigration to Canada has increased since the East Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s. Korean immigrants in Winnipeg chose the city for many reasons: the introduction of the Provincial Nominee Program, structural changes in the home country, and individual family strategies to provide better educational opportunities for their children. This article examines how changes in the current wave of globalization, at both global and local scale, have affected the migration of Koreans to Winnipeg, Canada and how individual households chose their immigration destination. This study contributes to understanding of the less popular immigrant destinations of Canada using a multiscalar analysis that includes household level. In addition to economic purposes and children’s education, changes of life style can be an important reason for immigrant location choice. Overall, the neoliberal economy in South Korea has pushed many Koreans to move to other countries, and the globalization of the Canadian economy has pulled nomadic middle-class members from other countries. 相似文献

We present a multivariate regression approach for mapping the spatial distribution of above-ground biomass (AGB) of B. planiculmis using field data and coincident moderate spatial resolution satellite imagery. A total of 232 ground sample plots were used to estimate the biomass distribution in the Nakdong River estuary. Field data were overlain and correlated with digital values from an atmospherically corrected multispectral image (Landsat 8). The AGB distribution was derived using empirical models trained with field-measured AGB data. The final regression model for AGB estimation was composed using the OLI3, OLI4, and OLI7 spectral bands. The Pearson correlation between the observed and predicted biomass was significant (R = 0.84, p < 0.0001). OLI3 made the largest contribution to the final model (relative coefficient value: 53.4%) and revealed a negative relationship with the AGB biomass. The total distribution area of B. planiculmis was 1,922,979 m2. Based on the model estimation, the total AGB had a dry weight (DW) of approximately 298.2 tons. The distribution of high biomass stands (> 200 kg DW/900 m2) constituted approximately 23.91% of the total vegetated area. Our findings suggest the expandability of remotely sensed products to understand the distribution pattern of estuarine plant productivity at the landscape level. 相似文献

This study presents a method to estimate streamflow in rivers regulated by lakes or reservoirs using synthetic satellite remote sensing data. To illustrate the approach, the new reservoir routing method is integrated into the Hillslope River Routing model, and a case study is presented for the highly regulated river in the Cumberland River basin (46,400 km2). The study period is April–May 2000, which contains a significant flood event that occurred in 1–2 May 2000. The model is shown to capture storage/release characterises in eight reservoirs with a mean normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 20% for entire simulation period and 27% for the May flood event. These errors are 69 and 75%, respectively, less than the NRMSE if reservoirs are not included in the model. Given the limitations of satellite missions, the impacts of the revisit cycles and operational periods are quantified. We used 26 observation sets of satellite altimetry over Cumberland River basin that are generated by considering both repeat cycles and satellite operation periods. For the revisit cycles, increasing the interval of repeat cycle leads to a corresponding increase of mean NRMSE from 27 to 59% as a result of sampling fewer flood events and smoothing of the change in storage signal as a result of longer intervals between visits. For the operation periods, the impact of data periods is limited because of the strong seasonal pattern of reservoir operations. Overall, the results suggest that the generalized routing model derived from reservoir stage observations can be used to simulate reservoir operating conditions, which can be used in forecasting hydrologic impacts of land cover or climate change.
