An enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) is characteristic for most of the acidic, Fe- and SO4-rich pit lakes and groundwaters in the lignite mining area of Lower Lusatia (Germany). One of these acidic lakes – the pit lake “RL 1223” – has a strong thermal and chemical stratification. The upper water layer (0–9 m) shows pH values of about 3 during all seasons. The monimolimnion (10–17 m) of the lake is anoxic and has pH values of about 7. The rare earth element (REE) patterns of the upper lake water show enriched LREE (LaN/YbN = 1.6) whereas the opposite patterns (depletion of LREE, LaN/YbN = 0.4) are found in the anoxic water of the monimolimnion. Experiments were conducted to observe the behaviour of REE during Fe oxidation in water from the monimolimnion (depth 14 m). The sampled monimolimnion water was placed in plastic bottles, and the changing water chemistry was observed for 40 weeks after sampling. Due to the initial anoxic conditions almost all Fe precipitated in the investigated water, and the pH value decreased from about 7 to 3 during the oxidation. The Fe precipitates are identified as ferrihydrite which is transformed into goethite within the oxidation process. Stable pH conditions (pH 3.0) were reached after about 10 weeks of oxidation.The original REE patterns of the investigated water are generally reflected in the Fe precipitates collected at the beginning of the experiment as well as after up to 40 weeks of oxidation. However, in the corresponding water LREE were temporally enriched with a maximum LaN/YbN ratio of 1.0 and a maximum LaN/SmN ratio of 2.3 after 6 weeks of oxidation time (pH 3.8–4.9). Although complex geochemical changes took place between the start and the end of the experiment REE patterns observed at these points in time are nearly identical. These differences of the REE pattern can be explained by the sampling procedure. The experimental findings can be transmitted to the mining dump aquifers of the study area where geochemical conditions comparable to the experimental oxidation time from 3 to 6 weeks are found and hydrous ferric oxides are precipitating. Groundwater passing through the mining dumps can preferentially desorb LREE from the Fe precipitates and display the typical LREE enrichment and carry it to the epilimnion of the acidic pit lakes in Lower Lusatia.  相似文献

Intracellular crystals of magnetite synthesized by cells of the magnetotactic vibroid organism, MV-1, and extracellular crystals of magnetite produced by the non-magnetotactic dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium strain GS-15, were examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and57Fe Mo¨ssbauer spectroscopy. The magnetotactic bacterium contained a single chain of approximately 10 crystals aligned along the long axis of the cell. The crystals were essentially pure stoichiometric magnetite. When viewed along the crystal long axis the particles had a hexagonal cross-section whereas side-on they appeared as rectangules or truncated rectangles of average dimension, 53 × 35 nm. These findings are explained in terms of a three-dimensional morphology comprising a hexagonal prism of 110 faces which are capped and truncated by 111 end faces. Electron diffraction and lattice imaging studies indicated that the particles were structurally well-defined single crystals. In contrast, magnetite particles produced by the strain, GS-15 were irregular in shape and had smaller mean dimensions (14 nm). Single crystals were imaged but these were not of high structural perfection. These results highlight the influence of intracellular control on the crystallochemical specificity of bacterial magnetites. The characterization of these crystals is important in aiding the identification of biogenic magnetic materials in paleomagnetism and in studies of sediment magnetization.  相似文献

Limiting accessibility to a fishing area can reduce fishing effort effectively and may therefore promote local recovery of depleted stocks. In January 2002, beach driving was banned in South Africa, thereby reducing angler access to large areas of the coastline, particularly in less-developed areas. In November 2001 a project had been established in the St Lucia Marine Reserve, on the east coast of South Africa, to compare surf-zone fish populations inside a no-take sanctuary zone with those in an adjacent exploited area. Subsequent to the ban, the aim of the project was adapted such that surf-zone fish populations were monitored for potential recovery in what had been the exploited area, located to the north of Cape Vidal, which anglers could no longer access easily, because of the prohibition on beach driving. Standardised research fishing was conducted at two sites in the previously exploited area and two sites in the no-take sanctuary. Conventional stock-status indicators showed evidence of recovery in the four most common species caught in the previously exploited area, in terms of both abundance and biomass. Generalised additive mixed models were used to account for the influence of targeting specific species; however, subtle differences in habitat between the sampling sites, improved angling skill over time, variability in recruitment, and differential species-specific responses complicated interpretation of results. The implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the future monitoring and management of marine protected areas both within the St Lucia Marine Reserve and farther afield.  相似文献

In this paper the solar neutron and white-light flare is studied on the basis of radioastronomical observations. It is shown that the 3 June, 1982 flare had an impulsive character. A strong shock wave (M A 2.9) was observed unusually soon after the impulsive phase of the flare. The radio spectrum of this event shows that the primary acceleration process probably occurred in the region with an electron density of n e = 4.4 × 1015 m–3. A physics-based computational model has been developed that is capable of reliably predicting the motion of a 3-D mine-shaped object impacting the water surface from the air, and subsequently, dropping through the water toward the sea bottom. This deterministic model [mine's six-degree-of-freedom dynamics (MINE6D)] accounts for six-degree-of-freedom motions of the body including unsteady hydrodynamic interaction effects. MINE6D allows for physics-based modeling of other hydrodynamic effects due to water impact, viscous drag associated with flow separation and vortex shedding, air entrainment, and realistic flow environments. To demonstrate the efficacy of the model, we compare deterministic MINE6D predictions with tank drops tests and field measurements. MINE6D captures the myriad of complex 3-D motions of cylindrical mines observed in field and laboratory experiments. For relatively simple straight motions, it obtains quantitative comparisons with the field measurements for the kinematics of mines freely dropping in the water including water impact and air cavity effects. In practical applications, the environments are often quite irregular, and the releasing conditions are also with uncertainties. To provide some guidance in understanding and interpreting statistical characterizations of mine motions in practical environments, we perform Monte Carlo simulation using MINE6D. These statistical results are not only the essential input for stochastic bottom impact and burial predictions of mines but also useful for the design of mines.  相似文献

Oil stranded as a result of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill has persisted for >10 years at study sites on Gulf of Alaska shores distant from the spill's origin. These sites were contaminated by "oil mousse", which persists in these settings due to armoring of underlying sediments and their included oil beneath boulders. The boulder-armored beaches that we resampled in 1999 showed continued contamination by subsurface oil, despite their exposure to moderate to high wave energies. Significant declines in surface oil cover occurred at all study sites. In contrast, mousse has persisted under boulders in amounts similar to what was present in 1994 and probably in 1989. Especially striking is the general lack of weathering of this subsurface oil over the last decade. Oil at five of the six armored-beach sites 10 years after the spill is compositionally similar to 11-day old Exxon Valdez oil. Analysis of movements in the boulder-armor that covers the study beaches reveals that only minor shifts have occurred since 1994, suggesting that over the last five, and probably over the last 10 years, boulder-armors have remained largely unmoved at the study sites. These findings emphasize the importance of particular geomorphic parameters in determining stranded oil persistence. Surface armoring, combined with stranding of oil mousse, results in the unexpectedly lengthy persistence of only lightly to moderately weathered oil within otherwise high-energy wave environments.  相似文献
