Earthen mounds with archaeological artifacts have been well known in Marajó Island since the 19th century. Their documented dimensions are impressive, e.g., up to 20 m high, and with areas as large as 90 ha. The mounds, locally known as tesos, impose a significant relief on the very low‐lying landscape of this region, which averages 4 to 6m above present sea level. These features have been traditionally interpreted as artificial constructions of the Marajoara culture, designed for defense, cemetery purposes, or escape from flooding. Here, we provide sedimentological and geomorphological data that suggest an alternative origin for these structures that is more consistent with their monumental sizes. Rather than artificial, the Marajoara tesos seem to consist of natural morphological features related to late Pleistocene and Holocene fluvial, and possibly tidal‐influenced, paleochannels and paleobars that became abandoned as depositional conditions changed through time. Although utilized and modified by the Marajoara since at least 2000 years ago, these earthen mounds contain a significant non‐anthropogenically modified sedimentary substratum. Therefore, the large Marajoara tesos are not entirely artificial. Ancient Marajoara cultures took advantage of these natural, preexisting elevated surfaces to base their communities and develop their activities, locally increasing the sizes of these fluvial landforms. We evaluated the structure of planktonic communities and paleoenvironmental conditions throughout the Cenomanian–Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE2) by studying bulk geochemical properties and the molecular isotopic composition of source-specific hydrocarbons from organic-rich sediments deposited in an intrashelf basin at the Levant Platform, central Jordan. High concentrations of desmethyl and 4-methylsteranes as well as dinosteranes indicate that marine algae including dinoflagellates were the main primary producing organisms. The presence of 2-methylhopanes and 13C-enriched hopanes, in addition to isotopically enriched aryl isoprenoids, evidenced the contribution of cyanobacteria and green sulfur bacteria, respectively. Additionally, variable but fairly low δ15N values during OAE2 suggest the occurrence of diazotrophy as a likely important process fueling primary production during OAE2 in this stratified/anoxic continental platform. Variations in the relative contribution of biomarkers revealed changes in planktonic communities associated with sea level change and water column stratification. OAE2 was characterized by strong stratification, anoxic bottom waters and a deep chemocline, as evidenced by high gammacerane and homohopane indices and the absence of photic zone euxinia (PZE) markers, respectively. However, the presence of isorenieratane and its derivatives in post-OAE black shales points to a shoaling of the chemocline and to PZE. This interval was also characterized by an exceptionally high abundance of chlorophyll-derived pristane and phytane (up to 2 mg g?1 TOC), likely as a result of highly enhanced primary production and organic matter preservation. The narrow-barred Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson is one of the most important linefish species caught in KwaZulu-Natal and southern Mozambique waters, forming the basis of important commercial, artisanal and recreational fisheries. A total of 439 S. commerson were sampled along the east coast of southern Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and southern Mozambique) between April 2011 and March 2012. Retrospective length-at-age data observed from whole otoliths were used to compare and describe sex-specific growth. Growth rates obtained from otolith-derived data were compared with those estimated from 29 tag-recaptured fish. Overall, ages ranged from 0.48 to 14.6 years for females and 0.4 to 13.57 years for males. Otolith readings yielded an average percent error of 11.21%, lower than recorded in a previous study from the region. Marginal zone analysis provided strong evidence that one translucent and one opaque growth zone were laid down annually. Schnute growth-function parameters indicated significant differences in growth between sexes. Females approached their mean asymptotic length at a faster rate, and grew to a greater mean length-at-age, relative to males. Growth in both sexes was rapid, achieving 67.46 cm FL (females) and 65.4 cm FL (males) in their first year of life. Growth rates obtained from tag-recaptured S. commerson indicated slower growth for smaller/younger fish up until 70 cm FL after which growth was very similar to that observed from otolith-derived data. Large price increases over a short time period can be indicative of a deteriorating food security situation. Food price indices developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization are often used to monitor food price trends at a global level, but largely reflect supply and demand conditions in export markets. However, reporting by the United States Agency for International Development's Famine Early Warning Systems Network indicates that staple cereal prices in many markets of the developing world, especially in regions that are food insecure areas, are isolated from international export market price trends. Here we present country and regional staple food price indices compiled for improved food security monitoring and assessment, and specifically for monitoring conditions of food access across diverse food insecure regions. We examine the market integration of regional and country level staple food price indices for 35 countries in West, East and Southern Africa and in Central Asia and Central America. We found that cereal price indices constructed using local market prices of within a food insecure region showed significant differences from the international cereals price, and had a variable price dispersion across markets within each marketshed. This work supports the need for improved decision-making about targeted aid and humanitarian relief, by providing earlier warning of food security crises. 相似文献

In this case study we consider the seismic processing of a challenging land data set from the Arabian Peninsula. It suffers from rough top‐surface topography, a strongly varying weathering layer, and complex near‐surface geology. We aim at establishing a new seismic imaging workflow, well‐suited to these specific problems of land data processing. This workflow is based on the common‐reflection‐surface stack for topography, a generalized high‐density velocity analysis and stacking process. It is applied in a non‐interactive manner and provides an entire set of physically interpretable stacking parameters that include and complement the conventional stacking velocity. The implementation introduced combines two different approaches to topography handling to minimize the computational effort: after initial values of the stacking parameters are determined for a smoothly curved floating datum using conventional elevation statics, the final stack and also the related residual static correction are applied to the original prestack data, considering the true source and receiver elevations without the assumption of nearly vertical rays. Finally, we extrapolate all results to a chosen planar reference level using the stacking parameters. This redatuming procedure removes the influence of the rough measurement surface and provides standardized input for interpretation, tomographic velocity model determination, and post‐stack depth migration. The methodology of the residual static correction employed and the details of its application to this data example are discussed in a separate paper in this issue. In view of the complex near‐surface conditions, the imaging workflow that is conducted, i.e. stack – residual static correction – redatuming – tomographic inversion – prestack and post‐stack depth migration, leads to a significant improvement in resolution, signal‐to‐noise ratio and reflector continuity. 相似文献

From the abundant metre to km-sized eclogite bodies in the Variscan crystalline complex of the Saxonian Erzgebirge we have investigated 19 samples from the ultrahigh pressure area at the Saidenbach reservoir. Twenty-two samples were from the south-western Erzgebirge, and from occurrences located only some km away from the reservoir. These samples were analysed for major and trace elements using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).The non-Saidenbach eclogites (SiO2=49–53 wt%) can be derived from N-mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) partially transitional to P-MORBs (e.g., (Nb)N: 3–36; (Sr)N: 4–17; (La/Sm)N<1.5 (in most instances <0.7) and (Sm/Yb)N around 1.2). Eclogites from the Saidenbach reservoir (SiO2=49–61 wt%) are characterised by (Nb)N: 20–170; (Sr)N: 9–43; (La/Sm)N: 1.2–3.0; (Sm/Yb)N: 1.4–8.8, and a clear negative Eu anomaly for the Si-rich samples, thus, being significantly different from the other investigated eclogites. These signatures point to protoliths related to within plate igneous rocks. However, we also discuss the possibilities of (1) protoliths related to a magmatic arc along an active continental margin and (2) the formation by melting of crustal material in the deep mantle and final crystallisation in the lowermost continental crust similar to the adjacent diamondiferous quartzofeldspathic rocks.Due to the specific geochemical signatures of eclogites in the Saidenbach area including other facts, this ultrahigh pressure region is believed to represent a section of lowermost crust not outcropping in other portions of the Saxonian Erzgebirge. 相似文献
