The magnetic fields of celestial bodies are usually supposed to be due to a ‘hydromagnetic dynamo’. This term refers to a number of rather speculative processes which are supposed to take place in the liquid core of a celestial body. In this paper we shall follow another approach which is more closely connected with hydromagnetic processes well-known from the laboratory, and hence basically less speculative. The paper should be regarded as part of a general program to connect cosmical phenomena with phenomena studied in the laboratory. As has been demonstrated by laboratory experiments, a poloidal magnetic field may be increased by the transfer of energy from a toroidal magnetic field through kink instability of the current system. This mechanism can be applied to the fluid core of a celestial body. Any differential rotation will produce a toroidal field from an existing poloidal field, and the kink instability will feed toroidal energy back to the poloidal field, and hence amplify it. In the Earth-Moon system the tidal braking of the Earth's mantle acts to produce a differential angular velocity between core and mantle. The braking will be transferred to the core by hydromagnetic forces which at the same time give rise to a strong magnetic field. The strength of the field will be determined by the rate of tidal braking. It is suggested that the magnetization of lunar rocks from the period ?4 to ?3 Gyears derives from the Earth's magnetic field. As the interior of the Moon immediately after accretion probably was too cool to be melted, the Moon could not produce a magnetic field by hydromagnetic effects in its core. The observed lunar magnetization could be produced by such an amplified Earth field even if the Moon never came closer than 10 or 20 Earth's radii. ABSTRACTData covering the whole of the surface of the Earth in a homogeneous and reliable manner has been accumulating over many years. This type of data became available from meteorological satellites from the 1960s and from Earth-observing satellites at a small scale from the early 1970s but has gradually accumulated at larger scales up to the present day when we now have data covering many environmental themes at large scales. These data have been used to generate information which is presented in the form of global data sets. This paper will give a brief introduction to the development of Earth observation and to the organisations and sensors which collect data and produce global geospatial data sets. Means of accessing global data sets will set out the types of data available that will be covered. Digital elevation models are discussed in a separate section because of their importance in georeferencing image data as well as their application to analysis of thematic data. The paper will also examine issues of availability, accuracy, validation and reliability and will look at future challenges. 相似文献

This paper presents an assessment of the avalanche hazard potential and the resulting risks on mountain roads for a 38.7-km-long
section of road no 76 (Siglufjarearvegur) in northern Iceland following a regional scale approach developed in the Alps. The
assessment of the individual avalanche death risk proved applicable to distinguish areas of avalanche hazard with a risk above
the accepted level, which should be given priority in following detailed investigations and the planning of possible protective
measures, from road sections where the avalanche death risk is low and accepted according to international practice. The cumulative
individual and collective avalanche death risks in the investigated road section provide a comparable measure for assessing
the avalanche hazard both within the Icelandic public road network and on an international scale. The case study on road no
76 in northern Iceland shows that a standardised regional scale risk-based approach is practical to determine, analyse and
assess the avalanche hazard situation on mountain roads in Iceland and guarantees comprehensible, reproducible and comparable

We used geologic and geochemical techniques to document the change with time of the distribution and concentration of contaminated bottom sediments in southern Lake Champlain near an International Paper Company plant. Our work, initiated in 1972, was expanded on behalf of Vermont citizens in a class-action suit against the International Paper Company. To update our 1972–1973 results, we collected nine cores in 1988 upstream and downstream from the paper plant effluent diffuser. Water content, volatile solids, organic carbon, and three ratios, Al/Si, Cl/Si, and S/Si, in addition to megascopic and microscopic observations, were evaluated to identify and trace the distribution of effluent and to measure the thickness of sediment affected by or containing components of effluent. Analyses were carried out on samples from the cores as well as from effluent collected directly from the plant's waste treatment facility. In 1973, two years after the plant opened, we cored near the diffuser; sediment contaminated with effluent was 4.5 cm thick. In 1988, in the same area, sediment contaminated with effluent was 17 cm thick. In 15 years, water content increased from 72 to 85 percent, volatile solids from 7 to 20 percent, and organic carbon from 2 to 12 percent. Cl/Si and S/Si were high only near the diffuser and were zero elsewhere. In the area of the diffuser, contaminated sediment appears to be accumulating at a rate of about 1 cm/yr. At a control location 22 km upstream (south) from the plant, the top, poorly consoli-dated layer was only 1 cm or less thick both in 1973 and in 1988. If an electrically conducting medium (e.g. a dusty plasma) rotates around a gravitating central body, which possesses an axisymmetric dipole field, the medium is supported to two-thirds by the centrifugal force and to one-third by electromagnetic forces under the condition that the magnetic field is strong enough to controll the motion. If the electromagnetic forces disappear — e.g. by a de-ionisation of the dusty plasma — the medium will fall down to two-thirds of its original central distance. The result of this process will be a cosmogonic shadow effect which is described in some detail.The Voyager 1/Saturn results demonstrate that the macro-structure of the Saturnian ring system can be explained as a result of this effect working at the formation of the system. The agreement between the theoretical results and the observations is better than a few percent.A similar analysis of the asteroidal belt shows that its macro-structure can also be explained by the cosmogonic shadow effect. The agreement between theory and observations is perhaps even better than in the Saturnian ring system.The observational results demonstrate that during their formation both the Saturnian ring and the asteroidal belt passed a plasma state dominated by electromagnetic effects. 相似文献

The most voluminous eruption of natrocarbonatite lava hitherto recorded on Earth occurred at Oldoinyo Lengai in March–April
2006. The lava flows produced in this eruption range from blocky 'a'a type to smooth-surfaced inflated pahoehoe. We measured
lava inflation features (i.e. one tumulus and three pressure ridges) that formed in the various pahoehoe flows emplaced in
this event. The inflation features within the main crater of Oldoinyo Lengai are relatively small-scale, measuring 1-5 m in
width, 2.5–24.4 m in length and with inflation clefts less than 0.4 m deep. Their small sizes are in contrast to a tumulus
that formed on the northwestern slope of the volcano (situated ~1140 m below the crater floor). The tumulus is roughly circular,
measures 17.5 × 16.0 m, and is cut by a 4.4 m deep axial inflation cleft exposing two separate flow units. We measured the
elastic properties (i.e. shear- and bulk moduli) of natrocarbonatitic crust and find that these are similar to those reported
for basaltic crust, and that there is no direct correlation between magmastatic head and pressure required to form tumuli.
All inflated flows in the 2006 event were confined by lateral barriers (main crater, erosional channel or erosional gully)
suggesting that the two most important factors for endogenous growth in natrocarbonatitic lava flows are (1) lateral barriers
that prevent widening of the flow, and (2) influx of new material beneath the viscoelastic and brittle crust. 相似文献

The possibility that annihilation is a major source of energy in cosmic physics is discussed. Since Klein suggested that the Universe might be matter-antimatter symmetric over two decades ago, there have been a significant number of papers developing the consequences of this view. These, however, have been largely ignored in the general literature. There have also been a number of papers claiming to prove that there cannot be antimatter anywhere in the observable Universe. In the first part of this paper an assessment of the differing views is given, and it is shown that none of the arguments against antimatter is convincing. The existence of antimatter is not in conflict with any observational fact. The reason for the negative attitude towards the existence of antimatter seems to be that this view is in conflict with a number of speculative but generally accepted theories. However, recent magnetospheric and heliospheric research, includingin situ measurements of cosmic plasmas, is now drastically changing cosmic plasma physics in a way that leads to growing scepticism about quite a few of the speculative theories.An attempt is made to develop a simple phenomenological model of QSOs based on star-antistar collisions. This model can account for such basic observational properties as the acceleration to very large (non-cosmological) velocities, the existence of broad emission lines, and at the same time narrow absorption lines with different redshifts. The absence of blueshifts is also explained. The model predicts that relatively young QSOs should be at cosmological distances whereas the old ones may very well be much closer to us than indicated by their redshift. 相似文献
