The article describes methodology of space monitoring of the existing landscapes as it is practised in the CIS (former USSR). Different points of mew are presented concerning environmental monitoring as well as the aspects of its practical organization. The objectives of automation of the ecological data acquisition, storage and processing are also dealt with; necessity of geographic information systems creation is substantiated. Experience gained in the operation of geoinformation systems is considered with plans on geo‐information base development for the needs of geographical and ecological studies of the CIS landscapes. Practical experience with case studies on identifying and mapping the ecological disaster zones is described in the Aral Sea basin and the Kyzyl Kum desert.  相似文献

The Dead Sea is an extensional basin developing along a transform fault plate boundary. It is also a terminal salt basin. Without knowledge of precise stratigraphy, it is difficult to differentiate between the role of plate and salt tectonics on sedimentary accumulation and deformation patterns. While the environmental conditions responsible for sediment supply are reasonably constrained by previous studies on the lake margins, the current study focuses on deciphering the detailed stratigraphy across the entire northern Dead Sea basin as well as syn and post-depositional processes. The sedimentary architecture of the late Quaternary lacustrine succession was examined by integrating 851 km of seismic reflection data from three surveys with gamma ray and velocity logs and the stratigraphic division from an ICDP borehole cored in 2010. This allowed seismic interpretation to be anchored in time across the entire basin. Key surfaces were mapped based on borehole lithology and a newly constructed synthetic seismogram. Average interval velocities were used to calculate isopach maps and spatial and temporal sedimentation rates. Results show that the Amora Formation was deposited in a pre-existing graben bounded by two N-S trending longitudinal faults. Both faults remained active during deposition of the late Pleistocene Samra and Lisan Formations—the eastern fault continued to bound the basin while the western fault remained blind. On-going plate motion introduced a third longitudinal fault, increasing accommodation space westwards from the onset of deposition of the Samra Formation. During accumulation of these two formations, sedimentation rates were uniform over the lake and similar. High lake levels caused an increase in hydrostatic pressure. This led to salt withdrawal, which flowed to the south and southwest causing increased uplift of the Lisan and En Gedi diapirs and the formation of localized salt rim synclines. This induced local seismicity and slumping, resulting in an increased thickness of the Lisan succession within the lake relative to its margins. Sedimentation rates of the Holocene Ze'elim Fm were 4–5 times higher than before. The analysis presented here resolves central questions of spatial extent and timing of lithology, deposition rates and their variability across the basin, timing of faulting at and below the lake floor, and timing and extent of salt and plate tectonic phases and their effect on syn and post-depositional processes. Plate tectonics dictated the structure of the basin, while salt tectonics and sediment accumulation were primarily responsible for its fill architecture during the timeframe examined here.  相似文献

Abstract— Radar data enable us to estimate an asteroid's near‐surface bulk density, thus providing a joint constraint on near‐surface porosity and solid density. We investigate two different approaches to simplifying this joint constraint: estimating solid densities by assuming uniform porosities for all asteroids; and estimating porosities by assuming uniform mineralogy within each taxonomic class. Methods used to estimate asteroids' near‐surface solid densities from radar data have not previously been calibrated via independent estimates. Recent spacecraft results on the chondritic nature of 433 Eros now permit such a check, and also support porosity estimation for S‐class objects. We use radar albedos and polarization ratios estimated for 36 main‐belt asteroids and nine near‐Earth asteroids to estimate near‐surface solid densities using two methods, one of which is similar to the uncalibrated algorithms used in previous studies, the other of which treats Eros as a calibrator. We also derive porosities for the same sample by assigning solid densities for each taxonomic class in advance. Density‐estimation results obtained for Eros itself are consistent with the uncalibrated method being valid in the mean; those derived for the full sample imply that uncalibrated solid densities are, at most, a few tens of percent too large on average. However, some derived densities are extremely low, whereas most porosity estimates are physically plausible. We discuss the relative merits of these two approaches.  相似文献

The substituted topaz Al2GeO4(OH,F)2, Al2(SixGe1-x)O4(OH,F)2 and Ga2GeO4(OH,F)2, as well as the substituted zunyite Al13Ge5O20(OH,F)16F2Cl have been synthetised. The unit-cell parameters of these artificial minerals, isomorphs of natural compounds, have been determined; the corresponding lists of dhkl are given. The study by I.R. spectroscopy of these compounds with a total or a partial replacement of Si by Ge in the same way as Ga-Ge topaz suggests the assignment of certain absorption bands to characteristic structural groups. The thermal decomposition of AlSi and AlGe topaz into mullite has been studied.  相似文献

Regional groundwater monitoring in the Athabasca region of Alberta, Canada, provides information on groundwater quality and geochemical changes over time, including data useful for evaluating potential impacts of industrial activity such as oil sands mining and in situ operations. Data collected from over 5000 wells from the 1950s to 2014, including 161 wells from government’s monitoring network, were used to develop and apply bootstrap techniques for the detection of changes in groundwater geochemistry over time and at specific points in time. Increasing temporal anomalies were identified in Cl, TDS, B, and naphthenic acids in the McMurray formation across 2003 and 2008, while decreasing anomalies were found for SO4. Temporal variance for 15 indicators was quantified for a smooth bootstrap approach to arrive at stable values representative of the most recent samples taken from wells in the study area. Stable values revealed sampling bias in the Devonian, Grand Rapids, Empress, Channel Beverly, and Muriel Lake formations suggesting expansion of sampling may be necessary. Although temporal anomalies were found in the McMurray formation, sampling bias was not identified. The entropy and relative magnitude of time series were evaluated to identify candidate wells for continued observations, which consist of wells with low measurements and low entropy that are near active industry lease boundaries. Temporal anomalies, stable values, and entropy were combined into type-well information to provide plots for visual inspection and interpretation. Stable values are useful for regional mapping, for detecting future changes and trends, and for identifying areas of interest warranting further investigation.

Powdered samples of carbon-nitrogen-hydrogen “tholins” that mimic Titan's atmosphere aerosols were produced under levitation conditions in the laboratory with a dusty plasma (PAMPRE experiment) using different initial N2:CH4 gas mixtures and studied using UV Raman and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Comparison between the tholins produced in the PAMPRE experiments and samples prepared by other techniques reveal that they form a fairly homogeneous family of hydrogenated carbon nitride materials. Wall effects during the PAMPRE deposition experiments and other were found to have little effect on the chemical structure of tholins. The first-order UV Raman bands of the disordered carbonaceous materials point to a large contribution of sp2 clusters present compared with olefinic CN or CC groupings, whereas features at 690 and 980 cm−1 suggest C3N3 rings are present as a species inserted in the macromolecular network. Diffraction techniques do not indicate the presence of large polyaromatic species in any of the tholins studied, whatever their nitrogen concentration, in disagreement with certain previous observations. This precludes the idea that the nature and degree of absorption in the visible range is controlled by the size of polyaromatic species, as has been observed in series of carbon-based materials obtained via thermal processing. Infrared spectroscopy analysis of the tholins has confirmed earlier identifications of chemical groups present including primary amines, nitriles, and alkyl moieties such as CH2/CH3, but has ruled out CH2/CH3 branches appearing on secondary or tertiary amines. Similar analyses were also performed on a polymeric (HCN)x material, which was found to present several similarities with the tholins, hence suggesting similar polymerization processes.  相似文献

Over the past 200 years of written records, the Hawaiian Islands have experienced tens of tsunamis generated by earthquakes in the subduction zones of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ (for example, Alaska–Aleutian, Kuril–Kamchatka, Chile and Japan). Mapping and dating anomalous beds of sand and silt deposited by tsunamis in low-lying areas along Pacific coasts, even those distant from subduction zones, is critical for assessing tsunami hazard throughout the Pacific basin. This study searched for evidence of tsunami inundation using stratigraphic and sedimentological analyses of potential tsunami deposits beneath present and former Hawaiian wetlands, coastal lagoons, and river floodplains. Coastal wetland sites on the islands of Hawai΄i, Maui, O΄ahu and Kaua΄i were selected based on historical tsunami runup, numerical inundation modelling, proximity to sandy source sediments, degree of historical wetland disturbance, and breadth of prior geological and archaeological investigations. Sand beds containing marine calcareous sediment within peaty and/or muddy wetland deposits on the north and north-eastern shores of Kaua΄i, O΄ahu and Hawai΄i were interpreted as tsunami deposits. At some sites, deposits of the 1946 and 1957 Aleutian tsunamis are analogues for deeper, older probable tsunami deposits. Radiocarbon-based age models date sand beds from three sites to ca 700 to 500 cal yr bp , which overlaps ages for tsunami deposits in the eastern Aleutian Islands that record a local subduction zone earthquake. The overlapping modelled ages for tsunami deposits at the study sites support a plausible correlation with an eastern Aleutian earthquake source for a large prehistoric tsunami in the Hawaiian Islands.  相似文献

A geochemical proxy for surface ocean nutrient concentrations recorded in coral skeleton could provide new insight into the connections between sub-seasonal to centennial scale nutrient dynamics, ocean physics, and primary production in the past. Previous work showed that coralline P/Ca, a novel seawater phosphate proxy, varies synchronously with annual upwelling-driven cycles in surface water phosphate concentration. However, paired contemporaneous seawater phosphate time-series data, needed for rigorous calibration of the new proxy, were lacking. Here we present further development of the P/Ca proxy in Porites lutea and Montastrea sp. corals, showing that skeletal P/Ca in colonies from geographically distinct oceanic nutrient regimes is a linear function of seawater phosphate (POSW) concentration. Further, high-resolution P/Ca records in multiple colonies of Pavona gigantea and Porites lobata corals grown at the same upwelling location in the Gulf of Panamá were strongly correlated to a contemporaneous time-series record of surface water POSW at this site (r2 = 0.7-0.9). This study supports application of the following multi-colony calibration equations to down-core records from comparable upwelling sites, resulting in ±0.2 and ±0.1 μmol/kg uncertainties in POSW reconstructions from P. lobata and P. gigantea, respectively.

Conjunctive management of surface water and groundwater requires sophisticated spatial and temporal analysis. In situations involving multiple jurisdictions such as state boundaries, management problems are magnified due to often conflicting regulations and policies. A transient MODFLOW model of the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie (SVRP) aquifer/river system mutually accepted by both the states of Idaho and Washington, USA, was used to evaluate regional solutions to potential water shortages through the use of strategically placed infiltration basins or injection wells. Artificial recharge of the SVRP aquifer was simulated using diversions from Lake Pend Oreille during winter periods when flows are high and excess water is available. Alternative locations for potential wells and detention basins were examined. Lag times for the water to impact stream/groundwater interaction areas along the Spokane River were evaluated to assess the potential for augmenting stream flows from July through September. Results indicated that the aquifer could be used to improve low-flow season streamflow values utilizing both infiltration basins and injection wells with winter surface water diversions. Depending on the location, as much as 30% of the winter diversion rate could be lagged to improve summer flows at the Spokane gage. Thus, a regional mitigation strategy is scientifically feasible.  相似文献

Regional mapping of Middle Albian, shallow‐marine clastic strata over ca 100 000 km2 of the Western Canada Foreland Basin was undertaken to investigate the relationship between large‐scale stratal architecture and lithology. Results suggest that, over ca 5 Myr, stratal geometry and facies were dynamically linked to tectonic activity in the adjacent Cordillera. Higher frequency modulation of accommodation is most reasonably ascribed to eustasy. The Harmon and Cadotte alloformations were deposited at the southern end of an embayment of the Arctic Ocean. The Harmon alloformation, forming the lower part of the succession, constitutes a wedge of marine mudstone that thickens westward over 400 km from <5 m near the forebulge to >150 m in the foredeep. Constituent allomembers are also wedge‐shaped but lack distinct clinothems, a rollover point or downlapping geometry. Ubiquitous wave ripples indicate that the sea floor lay above storm wave base. Deposition took place on an extremely low‐gradient ramp, where accommodation was limited by effective wave base. Lobate, river‐dominated deltas fringed the southern margin of the basin. The largest deltas are stacked in the same area, suggesting protracted stability of the feeder river. A buried palaeo‐valley on the underlying sub‐Cretaceous unconformity may have influenced compaction and controlled river location for ca 3 Myr. Adjacent to the western Cordillera, a predominantly mudstone succession is interbedded with abundant storm beds of very fine‐grained sandstone and siltstone that reflect supply from the adjacent orogen. Bioturbation indices in the Harmon alloformation range from zero to six which reflects the influence of stressors related to river‐mouth proximity. Harmon alloformation mudstone grades abruptly upward into marine sandstone and conglomerate of the overlying Cadotte alloformation. The Cadotte is composed of three allomembers ‘CA’ to ‘CC’, that represent the deposits of prograding strandplains 200 × 300 km in extent. Allomembers ‘CA’ and ‘CB’ are strongly sandstone‐dominated, whereas allomember ‘CC’ contains abundant conglomerate in the west. The dominantly aggradational wedge of Harmon alloformation mudstone records flexural subsidence driven by active thickening in the adjacent orogen: the high accommodation rate trapped coarser clastic detritus close to the basin margin. In contrast, the tabular, highly progradational sandstone and conglomerate bodies of the Cadotte alloformation record a low subsidence rate, implying tectonic quiescence in the adjacent orogen. Erosional unloading of the orogen through Cadotte time steepened rivers to the extent that they delivered gravel to the shore. These observations support an ‘anti‐tectonic’ model of gravel supply proposed previously for the United States portion of the Cretaceous foreland basin. Because Cadotte allomembers do not thicken appreciably into the foredeep, accommodation changes that controlled these transgressive–regressive successions were probably of eustatic origin.  相似文献
