The Atlantic coast of Galicia (NW Spain) is a high-energy environment where shingle beaches are currently developing. These coarser sediments alternate with sandy deposits which are also considered as beaches typical of a low-energy environment. The physical association of both types of sediment with contrasted sedimentary significance raises problems of interpretation. The study of four outcrops of fossil aeolianites on this coast has allowed us to reconstruct their evolution from the end of the Upper Pleistocene to the present day. Their chronology, estimated by optically stimulated luminescence between 35 and 14 ky at the end of the last glaciation (MIS2), coincides with a local sea level 120 m below the present one. This implies a coastline shifted several kilometres from its current location and the subaerial exposure of a wide strip of the continental shelf covered by sands. The wind blew sand to form dunes towards the continent, covering the coastal areas, which then emerged with no other limitation than the active river channels. Sea-level rise during the Holocene transgression has progressively swamped these aeolian deposits, leaving only flooded dunes, relict coastal dunes and climbing dunes on cliffs up to 180 m high. The aeolian process continued as long as there was a sandy source area to erode, although accretion finished when the sea reached its current level (Late Holocene). Since then, the wind turned from accretion to erosion of the dunes and sand beaches. This erosion exposes the older shingle beaches (probably of Eemian age) buried under the aeolian sands, as well as old, submerged forest remains and megalithic monuments. The destruction of sand beaches and dunes currently observed along the Galician coast is linked, according to most researchers, to anthropogenic global warming. However, their management should consider these evolutive issues.  相似文献

Physical characterization of core samples recovered from Gulf of Mexico   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Seventy whole rounds from conventional cores obtained during drilling to 300 mbsf at Atwater Valley and Keathley Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico in April and May 2005 were tested to determine geophysical and geomechanical parameters (liquid and plastic limit, porosity, specific surface, pH, sediment electrical conductivity, P- and S-wave velocities and undrained shear strength). Available data from a pressure core are included as well. Results show that the sediments are high specific surface plastic clays, and exhibit pronounced time-dependent stiffness recovery. Strains during coring disturb specimens, yet, the water content retains the effective stress history and permits gaining stiffness and strength information from conventional cores. Remolding is exacerbated when gas expands upon decompression; the limited pressure core data available show the advantages of preserving the pore fluid pressure during core recovery and testing. Valuable parameters for sediment characterization and engineering analysis are extracted from the data using pre-existing soil models.  相似文献

Streams are significant locations for nitrate (NO3 ?) processing within landscapes. This is especially important in dry climates given the limited water availability for biological processes elsewhere. In arid and semiarid regions, many streams are naturally saline. Elevated salinity can constrain the structure and function of aquatic organisms, which is expected to increase worldwide being associated to global warming. We investigated whole-reach NO3 ? uptake and denitrification in nine semiarid streams of variable water salinity (i.e. from freshwater to hyposaline) to test if NO3 ? processing would decrease with increasing salinity. We used pulse additions and Tracer Addition for Spiraling Curve Characterization (TASCC) to measure whole-reach uptake of added NO3 ?, and the acetylene block technique to measure sediment denitrification. TASCC results showed that only five of nine streams were able to retain added NO3 ?. Of these five retentive streams, four were saline; however, salinity did not control significantly the variation in whole-reach NO3 ? uptake observed across streams. Other measured environmental variables such as streambed NH4 + and organic carbon availability were better at explaining this variation. Denitrification was detected in all streams except one and its variation across streams was also independent of salinity. Although denitrification rates tended to be high, their contribution to whole-reach NO3 ? uptake was insignificant (≤2.16 %). Alternative pathways, heterotrophic assimilation and/or dissimilatory NO3 ? reduction to NH4 +, were probably responsible for most whole-reach NO3 ? uptake. Together, our results highlight that the function of streams in controlling external NO3 ? inputs is highly variable and salinity does not apparently constrain this role.  相似文献

We present high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations aimed at following the gravitational collapse of a gas core, in which a turbulent spectrum of velocity is implemented only initially. We determine the maximal value of the ratio of kinetic energy to gravitational energy, denoted here by \((\frac{E_{\mathrm{kin}} }{E_{\mathrm{grav}}} )_{\max}\), so that the core (i) will collapse around one free-fall time of time evolution or (ii) will expand unboundedly, because it has a value of \(\frac{E_{\rm kin}}{E_{\mathrm{grav}}}\) larger than \(( \frac{E_{\mathrm{kin}}}{E_{\mathrm{grav}}} )_{\mathrm{max}}\). We consider core models with a uniform or centrally condensed density profile and with velocity spectra composed of a linear combination of one-half divergence-free turbulence type and the other half of a curl-free turbulence type. We show that the outcome of the core collapse are protostars forming either (i) a multiple system obtained from the fragmentation of filaments and (ii) a single primary system within a long filament. In addition, some properties of these protostars are also determined and compared with those obtained elsewhere.  相似文献

Many biotic and abiotic processes contribute to variability in phytoplankton diversity in aquatic ecosystems. Depending on their intensity and on their frequency, these may drive non-equilibrium dynamics and enhance the species diversity. Different studies propose that biodiversity buffers ecosystem functioning against environmental fluctuations leading to more predictable aggregate community or ecosystem properties. Salto Grande reservoir is polymictic and eutrophic with recurrent summer cyanobacterial blooms. The aim of this study was to determine the key variable(s) related with phytoplankton diversity in order to predict the possible occurrence of an algal bloom at the ecosystem. A preliminary analysis of the data matrix suggested non-linear relationships between diversity and the selected variables: phytoplankton abundance and the vertical attenuation coefficient (Kd). The best function fitting of the scatter plot of phytoplankton diversity versus phytoplankton abundance was a rational function. The inflection point of phytoplankton diversity estimated by the second derivate of this function was 2.7 bit cell−1 which corresponded to an abundance of 3000 cells ml−1. The relationship of phytoplankton diversity and vertical attenuation coefficient values also show a humped distribution pattern (Gauss function). The inflection point of this function corresponded to a diversity value of 1.9 bit cell−1 and 2.5 m−1 for Kd. These inflection points were, respectively, related with the resource competition among the present species and the light limitation conditions. The showed patterns of diversity and the estimated threshold values could be integrated to construct a predictive model for the reservoir based on phytoplankton diversity and the probable ambient conditions of the reservoir.  相似文献

Climate and crop yield variability associated with El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are now predictable within limits. This predictability suggests a potential to tailor agricultural management to mitigate impacts of adverse conditions and to take advantage of favorable conditions. However, improved climate predictions may benefit society only with parallel advances in our ability to use this knowledge. We show that the value that will accrue to any given actor from an ENSO phase forecast should be viewed not as a known number but instead as a random draw from a distribution, even when the forecast is always correct. Forecast value depends on the highly variable contexts in which forecasts are used. Randomness in forecast value has significant implications for choices made by forecasters, forecast users and policy makers. To show randomness, we estimate potential economic values of ENSO forecasts for agricultural producers based on two realistic assumptions: the crop prices farmers receive are uncertain; and within an ENSO phase, the actual climate is variable in ways that affect profits. The use of synthetic weather and crop price series, with crop simulation models, helps show the range and likelihood of climate forecast value.  相似文献

Information related to rainfall erosivity in the Andes is scarce. This study was carried out to determine the characteristics of rainfall events at the La Encañada watershed, northern Peru, using daily rainfall data from the 1995 to 2000 period that included all the El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases. Three weather stations were installed within the study area, at the top, middle and bottom of the watershed. We analysed the total amount, duration, intensity, kinetic energy and probability of return of rainfall events. In general, 80% of the rainfall events at watershed level had an average rainfall intensity lower than 2.5 mm h?1 and only 4% had an average intensity larger than 7.5 mm h?1. Rainfall erosivity registered at the bottom of the watershed was slightly higher than in the rest of the area. The highest intensities were observed during an El Niño year whereas a La Niña year was characterized by the highest amount of total rainfall compared to the other ENSO phases and by the low intensity rain events. Simulations using the WEPP model estimated higher sediment yield and runoff for the bottom of the watershed during a La Niña year versus El Niño or Neutral years. Even when the analysed rainfall data was too limited to conclude erosion and runoff during any ENSO phase, the simulated results showed us the trend of the behaviour of rainfall erosivity under the ENSO phases at different locations.  相似文献
