Understanding and improving the public perception has become an important element in the management of flood risk worldwide.
In Iceland, studying perception of flood hazard and flood risk is, however, in its early stages. This paper presents a case
study on the public perception of flood hazard and flood risk in an Icelandic town prone to ice-jam floods. Awareness of the
population regarding historical inundations, self estimation of flood risk and worry is considered. The factual knowledge
of the residents is deconstructed in flood hazard parameters accessible to the lay population: number of events, dates, genesis
and boundaries. The performance of the respondents is rated for each parameter and the influence of several predictors evaluated.
The research shows three significant patterns: there is poor awareness and little worry about historical inundations in the
area; experience of the past flooding events in town is the most effective source of knowledge; awareness, risk estimation

In the context of a model of tropical cyclone intensity based on an improved meso-scale atmospheric model, numerical simulation is performed of the track and intensity variation of tropical cyclones(TC) arising from sea surface temperature(SST) variation over a specified sea region. Summary The water cycle analysis is the most important part of the GEWEX project. In the water cycle analysis, the land surface wetness
information plays an important role. TRMM/TMI is a new kind of microwave image unit, and has great potential application in
land characteristics analysis, especially in remote sensing of land surface wetness information and the monitoring of flood
and drought situations. In this study, the wetness index analysis method was used to analysis surface wetness during the summer
of 1998 over Boyang and Tongting lake area in China, and we retrieved the land surface emissivity over the same area to estimate
the land surface wetness. To accomplish this, we have first studied the TRMM/TMI forward characteristics. By using the VIDSORT
model, we developed wetness indexes BWI by combining three window channels of TRMM/TMI. According to our analysis results,
the wetness BWI10 are better than the other indexes. So we use the best wetness indexes (BWI10) sensitive to the land surface
wetness changes to do our flood classification and monitoring. In our calibration/validation test, the data from the China
L-SAR (located on an airplane) and the Canadian Radar-SAR aboard on the Radarsat were used. At the same time we also have
tried to retrieve the surface microwave emissivity from the TMI data. We use the emissivity product to estimate the land surface
wetness, and we also got a good result. Future work will focus on investigating possible improvements to the algorithm and
extending the testing of the algorithm to other regions.

Identifying the sources of reactive nitrogen (N) and quantifying their contributions to groundwater nitrate concentrations are critical to understanding the dynamics of groundwater nitrate contamination. Here we assessed groundwater nitrate contamination in China using literature analysis and N balance calculation in coupled human and natural systems. The source appointment via N balance was well validated by field data via literature analysis. Nitrate was detected in 96% of groundwater samples based on a common detection threshold of 0.2 mg N L?1, and 28% of groundwater samples exceeded WHO's maximum contaminant level (10 mg N L?1). Groundwater nitrate concentrations were the highest beneath industrial land (median: 34.6 mg N L?1), followed by urban land (10.2 mg N L?1), cropland (4.8 mg N L?1), and rural human settlement (4.0 mg N L?1), with the lowest found beneath natural land (0.8 mg N L?1). During the period 1980–2008, total reactive N leakage to groundwater increased about 1.5 times, from 2.0 to 5.0 Tg N year?1, in China. Despite that the contribution of cropland to the total amount of reactive N leakage to groundwater was reduced from 50 to 40% during the past three decades, cropland still was the single largest source, while the contribution from landfill rapidly increased from 10 to 34%. High reactive N leakage mainly occurred in relatively developed agricultural or urbanized regions with a large population. The amount of reactive N leakage to groundwater was mainly driven by anthropogenic factors (population, gross domestic product, urbanization rate and land use type). We constructed a high resolution map of reactive N source appointment and this could be the basis for future modeling of groundwater nitrate dynamics and for policy development on mitigation of groundwater contamination. 相似文献

The viscous semigeostrophic solutions obtained for the baroclinic Eady wave fronts are analyzed for the generation of the cross-frontal temperature gradient in the boundary layer. In the case of free-slip boundaries, the cross-frontal gradient is maximally generated at the surface by meridional temperature advection. In the case of no-slip boundaries, surface friction reduces the meridional temperature advection in the boundary layer: The maximum generation occurs above the surface layer and the temperature gradient at the surface is maintained by vertical diffusion. The no-slip solution is compared with the Ekman-layer model solution. Errors are quantified for the use of the Ekman-layer model in the mature state of frontogenesis.The surface frontogenesis is found to be affected by diffusivity both directly and indirectly. The direct effect of diffusivity is represented explicitly by the diffusion term in the potential temperature equation. The indirect effect of diffusivity is related implicitly to the temperature advection caused by the viscous part of the ageostrophic motion whose horizontal velocity component is defined by the frictional wind deflection (away from the geostrophy). The direct effect of diffusivity is frontolytical, whilst theindirect effect of diffusivity is frontogenetic in the mesoscale vicinity of the front. The indirect effect of diffusivity contributes dominantly to the mesoscale surface frontogenesis for the free-slip case, but it is offset by the divergence of the dynamic part of the ageostrophic motion at the surface level for the non-slip case. 相似文献
