Sediment distribution is investigated applying grain size analysis to 279 surface samples from the transitional zone between high mountains (Qilian Shan) and their arid forelands (Hexi Corridor) in north‐western China. Six main sediment types were classified. Medium scale (103 m) geomorphological setting is carefully considered as it may play an important role concerning sediment supply and availability. A tripartite distribution of sedimentological landscape units along the mountain to foreland transition is evident. Aeolian sediments (e.g. loess and dune sands) are widespread. They are used to identify aeolian transport pathways. The mU/fS‐ratio (5–11 µm/48–70 µm) among primary loess opposes the two grain size fractions being most sensitive to varying accumulation conditions. The first fraction is attributed to long‐distance transport in high suspension clouds whereas the latter represents local transport in saltation mode. The ratio shows strong correlation with elevation (R2 = 0.77). Thus, it indicates a relatively higher far‐traveled dust supply in mountainous areas (>3000 m above sea level [a.s.l.]) compared to the foreland. The contribution of westerlies to high mountain loess deposits is considered likely. Hereby, the influence of the geomorphological setting on grain size composition of aeolian sediments becomes apparent: the contribution from distant dust sources is ubiquitous in the study area. However, the far‐distance contribution may be reduced by the availability of fine sand provided in low topography settings. Plain foreland areas support fine sand deflation from supplying river beds, allowing the formation of sandy loess in foreland areas and intramontane basins. In contrast, high mountain topography inhibits strong sand deflation into loess deposits. Eastern parts of the Hexi Corridor show higher aeolian sand occurrence. In contrast, the western parts are dominated by gravel gobi surfaces. Summary Marble lenses within the polymetamorphic Ötztal crystalline complex frequently contain pockets of clinohumite and chondrodite and their titanium-rich varieties. Chondrodites contain up to 9.1 wt% TiO2 and clinohumites about half that amount. The maximum amounts of Ti in both minerals do not exeed values of 0.4 in the formula. XTi and XF are correlated by a slope of –1, indicating the efficiency of the TiO2Mg–1F–2 substitution at constant OH (Evans andTrommsdorff, 1983). Clinohumites sometimes contain lamellae which have nonstoichiometric cation ratios reflecting a composition between clinohumite and olivine. In many cases Ti-rich clinohumites and chondrodites coexist with Mg-ilmenite. Ti-rich clinohumites and chondrodites often break down to a symplectite of Ti-poor clinohumite (or olivine) and Mg-ilmenite. Parts of the marbles, which are barren of Mg-ilmenite contain F-rich clinohumites. The latter do not show any signs of breakdown features. We conclude therefore that fluorine stabilizes the humite group minerals to a wide range of metamorphic conditions. Ti-rich humite-group minerals are not stable till amphibolite facies conditions, and below F-rich humite-group minerals and olivine are the more stable phases in a H2O-rich, SiO2-poor carbonate system.
Titanreiche Chondrodite und Klinohumite in Marmoren des Ötztalkristallins.
Zusammenfassung In Marmorlinsen des polymetamorphen Ötztalkristaliins kommen häufig titanarme und titanreiche Clinohumite und Chondrodite vor. Die höchsten Titan-Gehalte in Chondrodit betragen 9.1 Gew.-% TiO2 während Clinohumite nur etwa die Hälfte dieses Wertes enthalten. Dies entspricht einem Maximalgehalt an Titan von 0.4 in den Formeln von Chondrodit und Clinohumit. Eine negative Korrelation zwischen XTi, und XF mit der Steigung von –1 bestätigt die Wirksamkeit der Substitution TiO2Mg–1F–2 bei konstantem OH (Evans undTrommsdorff, 1983). In Clinohumiten konnten nichtstöchiometrische Lamellen nachgewiesen werden, die chemisch zwischen Clinohumit und Olivin zusammengesetzt sind. Ti-reiche Clinohumite und Chondrodite koexistieren immer mit Mg-Ilmenit und wandeln sich häufig an ihren Rändern in einen Symplektit von Ti-ärmerem Clinohumit oder Olivin und Mg-Ilmenit um. In den Mg-Ilmenit freien Bereichen der Marmore kommen stets Ti-arme aber F-reiche Clinohumite vor, die niemals randliche Umwandlungserscheinungen zeigen. Die grobkörnigen (mm-großen) Humitminerale werden der variszischen Metamorphose in Amphibolitfazies zugeschrieben, während die Symplektite als Produkte der eoalpinen grünschieferfaziellen Überprägung angesehen werden. Wir schließen daraus, daß die Humitminerale durch Fluor in einem großen Bereich metamorpher Bedingungen stabilisiert werden, während Ti-reiche Humitminerale bei Bedingungen der Grünschieferfazies instabil werden und F-reiche Humitminerale und Olivin die stabilen Phasen in einem H2O-reichen, SiO2-armen Karbonatsystem sind.

We propose a discrete element model for brittle rupture. The material consists of a bidimensional set of closed‐packed particles in contact. We explore the isotropic elastic behavior of this regular structure to derive a rupture criterion compatible to continuum mechanics. We introduce a classical criterion of mixed mode crack propagation based on the value of the stress intensity factors, obtained by the analysis of two adjacent contacts near a crack tip. Hence, the toughness becomes a direct parameter of the model, without any calibration procedure. We verify the consistency of the formulation as well as its convergence by comparison with theoretical solutions of tensile cracks, a pre‐cracked beam, and an inclined crack under biaxial stress. Monometamorphic metasediments of Paleozoic or Mesozoic age constituting Schneeberg and Radenthein Complex experienced coherent deformation and metamorphism during Late Cretaceous times. Both complexes are part of the Eoalpine high-pressure wedge that formed an intracontinental suture and occur between the polymetamorphosed Ötztal–Bundschuh nappe system on top and the Texel–Millstatt Complex below. During Eoalpine orogeny Schneeberg and Radenthein Complexes were south-dipping and they experienced a common tectonometamorphic history from ca. 115 Ma onwards until unroofing of the Tauern Window in Miocene times. This evolution is subdivided into four distinct tectonometamorphic phases. Deformation stage D1 is characterized by WNW-directed shearing at high temperature conditions (550–600°C) and related to the initial exhumation of the high-pressure wedge. D2 and D3 are largely coaxial and evolved during high- to medium-temperature conditions (ca. 450 to ≥550°C). These stages are related to advanced exhumation and associated with large-scale folding of the high-pressure wedge including the Ötztal-Bundschuh nappe system above and the Texel–Millstatt Complex below. For the area west of the Tauern Window, F2/F3 fold interference results in the formation of large-scale sheath-folds in the frontal part of the nappe stack (formerly called “Schlingentektonik” by previous authors). Earlier thrusts were reactivated during Late Cretaceous normal faulting at the base of the Ötztal–Bundschuh nappe system and its cover. Deformation stage D4 is of Oligo-Miocene age and accounted for tilting of individual basement blocks along large-scale strike-slip shear zones. This tilting phase resulted from indentation of the Southern Alps accompanied by the formation of the Tauern Window.  相似文献

Numerical flow models can be a useful tool for dimensioning water wells and to investigate the hydraulics in their near‐field. Fully laminar flow can be assumed for all models calculated up to the screen. Therefore models can be used to predict—at least qualitatively, neglecting turbulent losses inside the well—the spatial distribution of inflow into the well and the overall hydraulic performance of different combinations of aquifer parameters and technical installations. Models for both horizontal (plan view) and vertical flow (cross section) to wells were calculated for a variety of setups. For the latter, this included variations of hydraulic conductivity of the screen, pump position, and aquifer heterogeneity. Models of suction flow control devices showed that they indeed can homogenize inflow, albeit at the cost of elevated entrance losses.  相似文献

Development of the ideas about the equilibrium between freshwater and saline water has received considerable attention in the literature, but little has been written so far about the earliest scientific works about well salinization. Based on a review of the literature from the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, this historical note explores how insights into groundwater abstraction and saltwater intrusion developed, and examples of the earliest field studies are provided. Fundamental research was driven by the need for increasing water supply, but the progress of science did not lead to sustainable management practices everywhere. Research outcomes were shared between scientists of different countries, marking the beginning of coastal hydrogeology as a scientific specialization in the first decade of the 20th century.  相似文献

The identification of potential recharge areas and estimation of recharge rates to the confined semi-fossil Ohangwena II Aquifer (KOH-2) is crucial for its future sustainable use. The KOH-2 is located within the endorheic transboundary Cuvelai-Etosha-Basin (CEB), shared by Angola and Namibia. The main objective was the development of a strategy to tackle the problem of data scarcity, which is a well-known problem in semi-arid regions. In a first step, conceptual geological cross sections were created to illustrate the possible geological setting of the system. Furthermore, groundwater travel times were estimated by simple hydraulic calculations. A two-dimensional numerical groundwater model was set up to analyze flow patterns and potential recharge zones. The model was optimized against local observations of hydraulic heads and groundwater age. The sensitivity of the model against different boundary conditions and internal structures was tested. Parameter uncertainty and recharge rates were estimated. Results indicate that groundwater recharge to the KOH-2 mainly occurs from the Angolan Highlands in the northeastern part of the CEB. The sensitivity of the groundwater model to different internal structures is relatively small in comparison to changing boundary conditions in the form of influent or effluent streams. Uncertainty analysis underlined previous results, indicating groundwater recharge originating from the Angolan Highlands. The estimated recharge rates are less than 1% of mean yearly precipitation, which are reasonable for semi-arid regions.  相似文献
