Secondary magnetic remanences residing in pyrrhotite and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) were studied in low-grade metamorphic carbonates of the Tethyan Himalaya in Nar/Phu valley (central Nepal) and used for interpretation of tectonic deformations. The characteristic remanence (ChRM) is likely of thermomagnetic origin related to post-peak metamorphic cooling occurring after the Eohimalayan phase (35–32 Ma). The ChRM postdates small-scale folding (main Himalayan folding F1 and F2) as shown by a negative fold test of site mean directions at 99% confidence level, and has been probably acquired between 32 and 25 Ma. Late-orogenic long-wavelength folding associated with the Chako antiform (CA) is recorded by the spatial dispersion of ChRM directions and the distribution of the main axes of the AMS tensor. The mean tilting of the ChRM direction since remanence acquisition (≈20–30°) approximately coincides with the tilting of the CA (31°) at the study area indicating that the pyrrhotite remanence predates the CA (CA formed at <18 Ma according to preliminary U/Pb dating). However, comparison of tilt angles of remanence directions and AMS tensor axes suggests that remanence acquisition was not completed before the onset of the CA formation. This could imply a younger age (Early Miocene or even younger) of the ChRM. Using the distribution of remanence directions along a small-circle as well as the distribution of AMS tensor axes, a clockwise mean rotation of 16° is obtained for a remanence age of ≈30 Ma. An Early Miocene remanence age would not change this result substantially. Compilation of rotations in the Tethyan Himalaya deduced from secondary pyrrhotite remanences reveals an increasing clockwise rotation from the Hidden valley in the W to the Shiar valley in the E (≈150 km distance), incompatible with an oroclinal bending model. 相似文献

We present the first comprehensive major, trace element and Hf, Nd and Sr isotope investigation of clinopyroxene and garnet mineral separates from a set of garnet clinopyroxenite xenoliths from the Salt Lake Crater, Oahu, Hawaii. These xenoliths occur in the posterosional Honolulu Volcanics Series lavas and represent some of the deepest samples from the oceanic mantle lithosphere. Our study shows that the Salt Lake Crater pyroxenites represent high pressure (>20 kb) accumulates from melts similar (but not identical) to the erupted Honolulu Volcanics, and unlike MORB or E-MORB-type melts. All clinopyroxene-garnet mineral pairs in these xenoliths show, within error, zero-age Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotope systematics. These pyroxenites have relatively radiogenic Hf isotope compositions (for a given Nd) and define a distinct steep slope (3.3) in εHf-εNd isotope space, similar to the Honolulu Volcanics but unlike other ocean island basalts (OIB). These compositions require an end-member component that falls above the OIB array in Nd-Hf space. This component is different than present-day MORB-mantle and it is best explained by an old depleted oceanic lithosphere. We suggest that this depleted component most likely represents a recycled depleted lithosphere that is intrinsic to the Hawaiian plume. In this respect, the Hawaiian plume is sampling both the enriched portion of a subducted oceanic crust (basalt and sediments) as well as the depleted lithospheric portion of it. This suggests that, at least for Hawaii, the whole subducted oceanic slab package has retained its integrity during subduction and subsequent mixing and storage in the mantle, probably in the order of a billion years, and that the plume is sampling the full range of these compositions. 相似文献

The dytiscid beetle Rhantus sikkimensis, Regimbart, 1899 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), a member of the freshwater insect communities of the Darjeeling Himalayas, were noted to predate on the coexisting larvae of Chironomus sp. Meigen. Evaluation of predation by R. sikkimensis on Chironomus sp. larvae, in the laboratory, revealed that a single adult morph of R. sikkimensis could kill and consume on an average 10–90 and 10–78 numbers of small and large Chironomus sp. larvae, respectively, per day, depending on the prey density. The attack rate ranged between 520 and 537, and the handling time ranged between 4.3 and 8.6 depending on the size of the preys. The predation varied with respect to predator density also, with a maximum of 151 larvae killed by three predators per day. Two indices of predation, ingestion rate (IR) ranging between 13.33 and 74.15 larvae/day/predator and clearance rate (CR) ranging between 19.67 and 39.99 L prey/day/predator, varied with the prey size and predator density, significantly, when the predation was observed for 9 consecutive days, at two predator densities. It was also noted that R. sikkimensis predated on an average 9.8 larvae of Chironomus sp. and 1 larva of Culex sp., when the larvae of both the species are present together as preys, showing a preference for the Chironomus sp. larvae. 相似文献

Effective quantification of land cover changes remains a challenge in Himalayan hills and mountains, and has a colossal value addition for natural resource management. Here we present a new robust method for classifying land cover vegetation at physiognomic scale along steep elevational gradients from ~?200 to ~?7000 masl in the Kailash Sacred Landscape, Western Himalaya, India along with four decades of land use and land cover changes (1976–2011) using remote sensing techniques coupled with intensive ground surveys. Results show that forest cover loss was minimum ca 7.14% of existing forest in 1976; but, however forest fragmentation is high especially in montane broad-leaved and subtropical needle leaved forests. This change largely impacted the quality of valuable tree species such as Quercus spp. Post 1976, continuous migration forced conversion of high altitude agricultural lands into grasslands and scrublands. Human settlement expansion was high especially in low altitudinal range valleys between 1000 and 2000 masl and has increased 6.76 fold since 1976, leading to high forest fragmentation in spite of reduced agriculture area in the landscape. Our physiognomic level classified land cover map will be a key for forest managers to prioritize conservation zones for protecting this unique forest land. 相似文献

We have estimated soil moisture (SM) by using circular horizontal polarization backscattering coefficient (\(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\)), differences of circular vertical and horizontal \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}} \, (\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RV}} {-} \sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}})\) from FRS-1 data of Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) and surface roughness in terms of RMS height (\({\hbox {RMS}}_{\mathrm{height}}\)). We examined the performance of FRS-1 in retrieving SM under wheat crop at tillering stage. Results revealed that it is possible to develop a good semi-empirical model (SEM) to estimate SM of the upper soil layer using RISAT-1 SAR data rather than using existing empirical model based on only single parameter, i.e., \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}\). Near surface SM measurements were related to \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\), \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RV}} {-} \sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\) derived using 5.35 GHz (C-band) image of RISAT-1 and \({\hbox {RMS}}_{\mathrm{height}}\). The roughness component derived in terms of \({\hbox {RMS}}_{\mathrm{height}}\) showed a good positive correlation with \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RV}} {-} \sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}} \, (R^{2} = 0.65)\). By considering all the major influencing factors (\(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\), \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RV}} {-} \sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\), and \({\hbox {RMS}}_{\mathrm{height}}\)), an SEM was developed where SM (volumetric) predicted values depend on \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\), \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RV}} {-} \sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}_{\mathrm{RH}}\), and \({\hbox {RMS}}_{\mathrm{height}}\). This SEM showed \(R^{2}\) of 0.87 and adjusted \(R^{2}\) of 0.85, multiple R=0.94 and with standard error of 0.05 at 95% confidence level. Validation of the SM derived from semi-empirical model with observed measurement (\({\hbox {SM}}_{\mathrm{Observed}}\)) showed root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.06, relative-RMSE (R-RMSE) = 0.18, mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.04, normalized RMSE (NRMSE) = 0.17, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) = 0.91 (\({\approx } 1\)), index of agreement (d) = 1, coefficient of determination \((R^{2}) = 0.87\), mean bias error (MBE) = 0.04, standard error of estimate (SEE) = 0.10, volume error (VE) = 0.15, variance of the distribution of differences \(({\hbox {S}}_{\mathrm{d}}^{2}) = 0.004\). The developed SEM showed better performance in estimating SM than Topp empirical model which is based only on \(\sigma ^{\mathrm{o}}\). By using the developed SEM, top soil SM can be estimated with low mean absolute percent error (MAPE) = 1.39 and can be used for operational applications. 相似文献

Palaeoproterozoic mafic dike swarms of different ages are well exposed in the eastern Dharwar craton of India. Available U-Pb mineral ages on these dikes indicate four discrete episodes, viz. (1) ~2.37 Ga Bangalore swarm, (2) ~2.21 Ga Kunigal swarm, (3) ~2.18 Ga Mahbubnagar swarm, and (4) ~1.89 Ga Bastar-Dharwar swarm. These are mostly sub-alkaline tholeiitic suites, with ~1.89 Ga samples having a slightly higher concentration of high-field strength elements than other swarms with a similar MgO contents. Mg number (Mg#) in the four swarms suggest that the two older swarms were derived from primary mantle melts, whereas the two younger swarms were derived from slightly evolved mantle melt. Trace element petrogenetic models suggest that magmas of the ~2.37 Ga swarm were generated within the spinel stability field by ~15–20% melting of a depleted mantle source, whereas magmas of the other three swarms may have been generated within the garnet stability field with percentage of melting lowering from the ~2.21 Ga swarm (~25%), ~2.18 Ga swarm (~15–20%), to ~1.89 Ga swarm (~10–12%). These observations indicate that the melting depth increased with time for mafic dike magmas. Large igneous province (LIP) records of the eastern Dharwar craton are compared to those of similar mafic events observed from other shield areas. The Dharwar and the North Atlantic cratons were probably together at ~2.37 Ga, although such an episode is not found in any other craton. The ~2.21 Ga mafic magmatic event is reported from the Dharwar, Superior, North Atlantic, and Slave cratons, suggesting the presence of a supercontinent, ‘Superia’. It is difficult to find any match for the ~2.18 Ga mafic dikes of the eastern Dharwar craton, except in the Superior Province. The ~1.88–1.90 Ga mafic magmatic event is reported from many different blocks, and therefore may not be very useful for supercontinent reconstructions. 相似文献

The focus of this study is a suite of garnet-bearing mantlexenoliths from Oahu, Hawaii. Clinopyroxene, olivine, and garnetconstitute the bulk of the xenoliths, and orthopyroxene is presentin small amounts. Clinopyroxene has exsolved orthopyroxene, spinel, and garnet. Many xenoliths also contain spinel-coredgarnets. Olivine, clinopyroxene, and garnet are in major elementchemical equilibrium with each other; large, discrete orthopyroxenedoes not appear to be in major-element chemical equilibriumwith the other minerals. Multiple compositions of orthopyroxeneoccur in individual xenoliths. The new data do not support theexisting hypothesis that all the xenoliths formed at 1 6–22GPa, and that the spinel-cored garnets formed as a consequenceof almost isobaric subsolidus cooling of a spinel-bearing assemblage. The lack of olivine or pyroxenes in the spinel–garnetreaction zones and the embayed outline of spinel grains insidegarnet suggest that the spinel-cored garnets grew in the presenceof a melt. The origin of these xenoliths is interpreted on thebasis of liquidus phase relations in the tholeiitic and slightlysilica-poor portion of the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2(CMAS) system at pressures from 30 to 50 GPa. The phase relationssuggest crystallization from slightly silica-poor melts (ortransitional basaltic melts) in the depth range 110–150km beneath Oahu. This depth estimate puts the formation of thesexenoliths in the asthenosphere. On the basis of this study itis proposed that the pyroxenite xenoliths are high-pressurecumulates related to polybaric magma fractionation in the asthenosphere, thus making Oahu the only locality among the oceanic regionswhere such deep magmatic fractional crystallization processeshave been recognized. The regionally prominent main boundary thrust (MBT) of the Himalayan fold-thrust belt in northwest India is typically defined by the presence of Proterozoic rocks in the hanging wall and Cenozoic rocks in the footwall. The present study focuses on identifying the MBT contact across Gambar River section in Himachal Pradesh, India, using alternative methodologies, such as the meter-scale litho-structural mapping, followed by detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology to precisely identify the thrust contact and provide insights on the deformation history of the MBT zone. We have identified a sharp change in the age (from ~600 to ~61 Ma) of the sedimentary units along a narrow zone in the study area by detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology using LA-ICP-MS. The sharp change in the detrital zircon U–Pb age data thus delineate the MBT occurring in the area along a < ~1 m thickness. The lithological assemblage and the age data indicate the unified maximum depositional age from ~700 to ~600 Ma for the hanging wall rocks, which have been equated with the Krol Group of the Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS). In comparison, the footwall rocks exhibit the maximum depositional age of ~61 Ma and have been equated with the Cenozoic Subathu Formation of the Sub-Himalayan Sequence (SHS). 相似文献
