The example of Nachocho's enkang shows the recent socio-economic changes taking place in the southern Maasai Steppe of N Tanzania. The initial point is the traditional living community in the enkang and the form of pastoralism which are the basis of the economic and social security systems of the Maasai. The state land use policy, however, leads to the strong restriction of the grazing potential. In order to secure land titles for themselves, the Maasai try to pursue agropastoral activities, although they have had, until recently, no contact or experience with farming at all. In this transitional situation, their old pastoral economic basis is strongly endangered, although no useful alternative has been found, so far. For the Maasai of the Tanzanian Steppe a process of impoverishment is thus being triggered off.  相似文献

Pebbles of potassic granitoids and metamorphites constitute up to 5% of the basal conglomerate of the Moodies Group in a ratio of 2 : 1. The granitoid pebbles frequently show micrographic quartz–feldspar intergrowth, whereas the metamorphites—of a modal composition similar to that of the granitoids—are characterized by large quartz grains which could represent original quartz phenocrysts in felsic volcanic precursors.The granitoids show high K2O, Sr, K2O/Na2O, and K/Rb, small enrichment of light REE, large negative Eu-anomalies, and slightly depleted and fractionated heavy REE. Compared to the granitoids the metamorphites show higher Fe2O3, TiO2, and Cr concentrations, greater enrichment of light REE, and also large negative Eu-anomalies.There is little similarity between the Moodies pebbles and the majority of the rocks of the Ancient Gneiss Complex of Swaziland (AGC). There is only some similarity of the REE distribution patterns between the pebbles and the Mkhondo Metamorphic Suite, possibly an areally restricted phase of the AGC. The geochemical data, and especially the large negative Eu-anomalies suggest that the Moodies pebbles were derived from granites which represent residual magmas from which much plagioclase had been removed. The granites crystallized at depths of < 7 km from magmas with low H2O-pressures in a rather thick sialic crust. It appears possible that the pre-Moodies granitoids originated through partial melting of low-Al2O3 siliceous gneisses of the AGC. A chronologic connection of the formation of the granitoids with the late Onverwacht Group volcanicity is possible.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of ergodicity of stochastic processes starting from a theoretical point of view, with the aim of obtaining a deeper understanding for practical applications. The problem is tackled bearing in mind the concept of ‘practical ergodicity’, that is, the possibility of obtaining reliable information about ensemble averages by using temporal averages. Some general analytical tools are given to address the problem of accuracy of temporal averages and an example of their use in a possible design of experiments is given. A series of Monte Carlo numerical simulations are performed by means of an analytical non-linear 1.5-DOF model of parametrically excited roll motion. The outcomes of such simulations are analysed to show the effect of ship speed and sea spectrum shape. The effect of wave grouping phenomenon is discussed with particular attention to the Doppler effect. Qualitative indications given by the numerical simulations are then compared with experimental tests showing a good agreement. Practical ergodicity of generated sea in towing tank is also briefly addressed.  相似文献

Sediment drifts provide information on the palaeoceanographic development of a region. Additionally, they may represent hydrocarbon reservoirs. Because of this, sediment drift investigation has increased over the last few years. Nevertheless, a number of problems remain regarding the processes controlling their shape, the characteristic lithological and seismic patterns and the diagnostic criteria. As an example, sediment drifts from the Agulhas Plateau, southwest Indian Ocean, are presented here. They show a variety of seismic features and facies including an asymmetric mounded geometry, changes in internal reflection pattern, truncation of internal reflectors at the seafloor and discontinuities. This collection of observations in combination with the local oceanography appears to comprise a diagnostic tool for sediment drifts.  相似文献

The Earth's climate is controlled by various factors, with large scale ocean currents playing a significant role. In particular, the global thermohaline circulation of water masses like the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), or the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), is a global motor for maintaining the exchange of water masses. The AABW and NADW have met and interacted off South Africa since Oligocene times. Here, the narrow deep Agulhas Passage gateway, located between South Africa and the submarine Agulhas Plateau, constrains bottom water exchange between the southeast Atlantic and the southwest Indian Ocean. A seismostratigraphic analysis of sedimentary structures in the Transkei Basin, which opens up at the eastern end of the Agulhas Passage, was carried out, to reconstruct the palaeocurrents off South Africa. The analysis of newly collected high resolution seismic reflection data showed the effect of large scale current deposition. There are at least 5 major sedimentary phases to observe, some of which seem to be influenced by NADW and AABW. The first stage represents ongoing deep sea sedimentation from middle Cretaceous to middle Tertiary times. Later stages are separated by discordances, which represent the onset of AABW and NADW, among others, triggered by the opening of the Drake Passage gateway ( 35 Ma) and the closure of the Isthmus of Panama ( 3 Ma). We found two large drift bodies located one above the other. Corresponding to their shape and position, the older drift is inferred to have been deposited by currents flowing in a north–southerly direction, whereas the younger drift lies perpendicular to it and seems to be built up by west–east flowing currents.  相似文献

The activity of natural radionuclides in soil has become an environmental concern for local public and national authorities because of the harmful effects of radiation exposure on human health. In this context, modelling and mapping the activity of natural radionuclides in soil is an important research topic. The study was aimed to model, in a spatial sense, the soil radioactivity in an urban and peri-urban soils area in southern Italy to analyse the seasonal influence on soil radioactivity. Measures of gamma radiation naturally emitted through the decay of radioactive isotopes (potassium, uranium and thorium) were analysed using a geostatistical approach to map the spatial distribution of soil radioactivity. The activity of three radionuclides was measured at 181 locations using a high-resolution ?-ray spectrometry. To take into account the influence of season, the measurements were carried out in summer and in winter. Activity data were analysed by using a geostatistical approach and zones of relatively high or low radioactivity were delineated. Among the main processes which influence natural radioactivity such as geology, geochemical, pedological, and ecological processes, results of this study showed a prominent control of radio-emission measurements by seasonal changes. Low natural radioactivity levels were measured in December associated with winter weather and moist soil conditions (due to high rainfall and low temperature), and higher activity values in July, when the soil was dry and no precipitations occurred.  相似文献
