Summary Mineralogical composition and trace elements distribution in the < 2-m size fraction of Late Cretaceous-Oligocene shales from the Southern Apennines (Italy) are presented.The clay mineral assemblage consists of illite, smectite, kaolinite and minor chlorite. Analytical evidence points to a detrital micaceous precursor for illite and smectite. Accessory phases were also found. Chemical data, normalized with respect to the Post-Archean Australian Shales (PAAS), indicate depletion of Ba, Rb, Y, Zr and enrichment of Nb. PAAS-normalized REE-patterns exhibit a positive Eu anomaly and HREE depletion. A kaolinite-rich sample has high REE contents in contrast to smectite-rich fractions. A REE-pattern without appreciable Eu anomaly is displayed by the illite-rich sample.Statistical data processing indicates a link between Ti, P, Y, Zr, Nb and Yb, suggesting that accessory phases may play a role in controlling HREE and that the observed LREE/HREE fractionation may also be due to hydraulic sorting of these phases. An important La-kaolinite relationship accounts for the capability of this phase to host LREE. Smectite and, thus, adsorption mechanisms, appear to exert a limited role in distributing REE. The Eu anomaly is a source inherited feature, probably not determined solely by clay minerals.

Zusammenfassung Die mineralogische Zusammensetzung und die Verteilung der Spurenelemente in der < 2 m Fraktion von spät-kretazischen-oligozänen Schiefern aus dem südlichen Appenin (Italien) werden in Übersicht gebracht. Die Tonmineral-Vergesellschaftung besteht aus Illit, Smectit, Kaolinit und kleineren Mengen von Chlorit. Analytische Daten weisen darauf hin, daß Illit und Smectit aus einem detritischen Glimmermineral hervorgegangen sein dürften. Auch akzessorische Phasen kommen vor. Chemische Daten zeigen gegenüber post-Archaischen australischen Schiefern (PAAS) eine Verarmung in Ba, Rb, Y, Zr und eine Anreicherung von Nb. PAAS-normalisierte SEE-Verteilungsmuster zeigen eine positive Eu Anomalie und eine Verarmung an HSEE. Eine Kaolinit-reiche Probe zeigt hohe Gehalte an gesamten SEE im Gegensatz zu einer Smectit-reichen. Die Illit-reiche Probe zeigt ein SEE-Verteilungsmuster ohne deutliche Eu Anomalie.Statistische Verarbeitung der Daten läßt eine Verbindung zwischen Ti, P, Y, Zr, Nb und Yb erkennen; dies weist darauf hin, daß akzessorische Phasen einen Einfluß auf die HSEE-Verteilung haben und daß die beobachtete LSEE/HSEE Fraktionierung auch auf hydraulische Sortierung dieser Phasen zurückgehen könnte. Methyl halides (monohalomethanes), especially methyl bromide, are known to contribute significantly to ozone destruction in the stratosphere. Budgets of natural and anthropogenic methyl bromide suggest that marine organisms may be the source of a significant proportion of the total global production. Since phytoplankton are abundant in surface waters, they are obvious candidates. Cultures of nine phytoplankton species were grown in CO2-enriched, nitrate-limited medium in sealed glass vessels. Species tested include Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis sp., Porphyridium sp., Synechococcus sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis sp., Prorocentrum sp., Emiliania huxleyi and Phaeocystis sp. Methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) concentrations were determined by bubbling the cultures with high-purity air, cryotrapping the effluent and analyzing it on a gas chromatograph with an electron capture detector. The Phaeocystis sp. samples were monitored with GCMS. Cell population, bacterial population, Chl a, pH, and nitrate concentration were monitored for periods of at least two weeks. CH3Cl was produced by all cultures. CH3Br was absent in Tetraselmis sp. and Isochrysis sp. cultures, but present in all the others. Methyl iodide (CH3I) was present in most cultures but could not be quantified due to analytical limitations. CH3I and CH3Br production was fastest in stationary phase and continued long after cell division had ceased. Axeic cultures of Phaeocystis sp. achieved almost identical production rates of CH3Cl and CH3Br as xenic cultures of the same species. Species from tropical waters had faster CH3Cl and CH3Br production rates than temperate species. Scaling the observed production rates using global standing stock estimates for Chl a and particulate nitrogen indicate that phytoplankton can account for only a fraction of the CH3Cl and CH3Br believed to be produced in the ocean. Calculations based on the estimated global biomass of Phaeocystis sp. and E. huxleyi blooms show that their contribution is insignificantly small. 相似文献

We consider long barotropic waves in a system of two rectangular basins connected by a channel in the case where waves are
generated by the moving region of disturbances of atmospheric pressure passing above one of the basins. By using a numerical
model, we compute the characteristics of the wave process for various values of the parameters of this system. The results
of numerical calculations are compared with the corresponding characteristics obtained for the case of a closed basin. We
also analyze the distinctive features of long-wave processes induced in the presence of the channel.

The distribution of Sarcocornia pillansii (Moss) A.J. Scott was determined by water-table depth and electrical conductivity (EC) of the groundwater. Where the groundwater was accessible (<1.5 m) and had a low EC (<80 mS cm−1), S. pillansii extended its roots down to the water-table where a suitable water potential gradient was shown to exist between the soil and roots. In areas where the groundwater was too deep and/or hypersaline, the plants grew on hummocks. The unconfined aquifer below the floodplain is linked to the estuary and although diurnal tidal waves were dampened, water-table level fluctuations were recorded between tidal events. The complex geomorphology of the floodplain influences groundwater flow, in turn affecting the distribution of the salt marsh vegetation. 相似文献

The late Holocene environmental history of the Lesotho highlands, southern Africa, is poorly understood with few detailed studies to date. At Likoaeng, Senqu Valley, Lesotho, a 3 m stratified sedimentary sequence from an open-air archaeological site records vegetation development for the period 3400-1070 cal. BP. Phytolith analyses and bulk sediment organic matter δ13C indicate that C4 grassland dominated the lower part of the sequence until approximately 2960 cal. BP when there was a switch to C3 Pooid grassland (2960-2160 cal. BP). Also noted was a change from hunting mainly bovids to a dominance of fishing at the site. The change in grassland type and archaeological subsistence strategies corresponds with an episode of neoglacial cooling and the expansion of Alpine sourgrasses into lower altitudes. From 2160 to 1600 cal. BP grassland became a mix of C3 and C4 types and by 1600-1070 cal. BP there was a return to C4 dominated grassland. During this latter phase there was a reversal from fishing to hunting again (and eventually some keeping of domestic livestock) at the site. These data outline the vegetation response to latitudinal shifts of frontal systems, and relatively strong atmospheric circulation variability, perhaps underpinned by variations of polar water into the Benguela Current during the late Holocene. 相似文献

Due to differences in hydraulic conductivity and effects of well construction geometry, groundwater lateral flow through a monitoring well typically differs from groundwater flow in the surrounding aquifer. These differences must be well understood in order to apply passive measuring techniques, such as passive flux meters (PFMs) used for the measurement of groundwater and contaminant mass fluxes. To understand these differences, lab flow tank experiments were performed to evaluate the influences of the well screen, the surrounding filter pack and the presence of a PFM on the natural groundwater flux through a monitoring well. The results were compared with analytical calculations of flow field distortion based on the potential theory of Drost et al. (1968). Measured well flow field distortion factors were found to be lower than calculated flow field distortion factors, while measured PFM flow field distortion factors were comparable to the calculated ones. However, this latter is not the case for all conditions. The slotted geometry of the well screen seems to make a correct analytical calculation challenging for conditions where flow field deviation occurs, because the potential theory assumes a uniform flow field. Finally, plots of the functional relationships of the distortion of the flow field with the hydraulic conductivities of the filter screen, surrounding filter pack and corresponding radii make it possible to design well construction to optimally function during PFM applications. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with the models appropriate for the dynamic assessment of jack-ups, concentrating particularly on the long-term response due to random ocean waves and on work-hardening plasticity models used for spud-can response. A methodology for scaling of short-term statistics, calculated using a Constrained NewWave technique, is shown in a numerical experiment for an example jack-up and central North Sea location. The difference in long-term extreme response statistics due to various footing assumptions is emphasised. As a result of mooring of autonomous seabed stations in bays of Shikotan Island, the records of two tsunamis were obtained from strong earthquakes that occurred off the coast of Chile on April 1, 2014, and September 16, 2015. In both cases, prolonged intense vibrations with a pronounced group structure were observed in various bays, mainly with periods of the main modes of resonance oscillations. The second event was more dangerous, and the wave height was 0.9 m at Malokurilskaya Bay. The increase in the energy of fluctuations in 2015 was more significant, manifesting itself in a wider range of periods. Numerical simulation of the tsunami showed that the nature of wave propagation in both earthquakes was identical in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, approaching Russia’s Pacific coast, and was characterized by weak damping, in contrast to waves propagating to the south and southwest. This explains why expect large waves can be expected on the coasts of the Kurils from earthquakes off the coast of South America, despite the considerable distance. 相似文献
