An intermediate complexity atmospheric general circulation model has been used to investigate the influence of the South Atlantic Ocean (SAO) dipole (SAOD) on summer precipitation over the Guinea Coast of West Africa. Two ensemble integrations in which idealized but realistic SAOD-type sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly is prescribed only in the SAO, and then globally are performed and inter-compared. Consistently, above (below) the average precipitation is simulated over the Guinea Coast during the positive (negative) phase of the SAOD. Comparison of the two set of experiments reveal that in its active years, the SAOD is a dominant mechanism that shapes the spatial character of summer precipitation at the Guinea coast, the global SST variability merely slightly moderate its effects. During the SAOD, cool SST anomaly in the extra-tropical SAO off the Brazil–Uruguay–Argentina coast gives rise to suppressed convection and mass divergence. In turn, the subsidence tends to amplify the sub-tropical arm of anomalous Hadley-type circulation and consequently large scale convection and mass flux convergence in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Guinea region bordering on the coastal fringes of West Africa. We derive the turbulent structure parameters of temperature $C_{T}^2$ and humidity $C_q^2$ from high-resolution large-eddy simulations (LES) of a homogeneously-heated convective boundary layer. Boundary conditions and model forcing were derived from measurements at Cabauw in The Netherlands. Three different methods to obtain the structure-parameters from LES are investigated. The shape of the vertical structure-parameter profiles from all three methods compare well with former experimental and LES results. Depending on the method, deviations in the magnitude up to a factor of two are found and traced back to the effects of discretization and numerical dissipation of the advection scheme. Furthermore, we validate the LES data with airborne and large-aperture scintillometer (LAS) measurements at Cabauw. Virtual path measurements are used to study the variability of $C_{T}^2$ in the mixed layer and surface layer and its implications for airborne and LAS measurements. A high variability of $C_{T}^2$ along a given horizontal path in the LES data is associated with plumes (high values) and downdrafts (low values). The path average of $C_{T}^2$ varies rapidly in time due to the limited path length. The LES results suggest that measured path averages require sufficient temporal averaging and an adequate ratio of path length to height above the ground for the LAS in order to approach the domain average of $C_{T}^2$ . 相似文献

The Orion program is a project to develop a 2K × 2K infrared focal plane using InSb p-on-n diodes for detectors. It is the
natural follow-up to the successful Aladdin 1K × 1K program started in the early 90's. The work is being done at the Raytheon
Infrared Operations Division (RIO, previously known as the Santa Barbara Research Center) by many of the same people who created
the Aladdin focal plane. The design is very similar to the successful Aladdin design with the addition of reference pixels,
whole array readout (no quadrants), two-adjacent-side buttability, and a packaging design that includes going directly to
the ultimate focal plane size of 4K × 4K. So far we have successfully made a limited number of hybrid modules with InSb detectors.
In this paper we will describe the design features and test data taken from some of these devices.

Pinna bicolor (Mollusca: Pelecypoda) were transplanted between four sites near a lead smelter. The species composition of their epifauna (sessile and mobile) was examined in relation to characteristics of both sediments and seston at the sites. Seventy-two taxa were distinguished in the epifaunal community. Substantial differences were found in the short-term sensitivity of some of the species to concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn in sediments and to sediment particle size. The short-term sensitivity of many species to metals or sediment particle size explained their long-term distribution pattern. Twenty-three taxa were identified as significantly characterizing the faunal differences. Of these, eleven (four molluscs, four bryozoans, two barnacles and one ascidian) were affected by both sediment metal concentration and particle size, and eight (four molluscs, one bryozoan, one polychaete, one hydroid and one barnacle) were affected by metal contamination but not particle size. Of all fauna examined, the Bryozoa were the most metal-sensitive. Four species, Smittina raigii (Bryozoa), Galeolaria sp. 1 (Polychaeta), Epopella simplex (Cirripedia) and Monia ione (Pelecypoda) were identified by their short- and long-term sensitivity to metal contamination, and absence of sensitivity to sediment particle size, as suitable species for monitoring the effects of metal contamination on the epifauna. We present 0.5-arcsec-resolution near-infrared images of six ultraluminous infrared galaxies with known redshifts. Six of the eight bright nuclei are resolved on kiloparsec scales, suggesting that there is significant circumnuclear star formation or close progenitor nuclei. At this spatial resolution, the nuclei have very red colours that cannot in general be reproduced by reddening stellar light, but require an additional component of hot dust emission. In five of the six primary nuclei more than 20 per cent of the K -band continuum originates in hot dust, but the temperature cannot be determined by JHK broad-band colours alone. Comparison with the spectral shapes, however, does allow the temperature to be constrained, and we find in every case that it is at the upper end of the permissible range, ≳1000 K. This does not necessarily imply that there is an active galactic nucleus present, since there is evidence that stellar processes can also generate dust this hot via stochastic heating of small grains. The quantities of hot dust we have found here can make up to 0.5-mag difference to the K -band magnitude even at , with implications for observations and population synthesis models of higher-redshift objects. Observations in the L or M bands, where hot dust is most important at , could help to discriminate between models of dusty starbursts and ellipticals. 相似文献

Secular resonances in the early solar system are studied in an effort to establish constraints on the time scale and/or method of solar nebula dispersal. Simplified nebula models and dispersal routines are employed to approximate changes in an assumed axisymmetric nebula potential. These changes, in turn, drive an evolutionary sequence of Laplace-Lagrange solutions for the secular variations of the solar system. A general feature of these sequences is a sweep of one or more giant planet resonances through the inner solar system. Their effect is rate dependent; in the linearized models considered, characteristic dispersal times ≤O(104?5 years) are required to avoid the generation of terrestrial eccentricities and inclinations in excess of observed values. These times are short compared to typical estimates of the accretion time scales [i.e., ~O(107?9 years)] and may provide an important boundary condition for developing models of nebula dispersal and solar system formation in general. 相似文献

Vertical profiles of dissolved Al in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea are presented. Although dissolved Al appears to be involved in the biochemical cycle of elements, Al does not behave solely as a nutrient within the oceans. Physico-chemical processes (i.e. adsorption and/or chemical precipitation) control the concentration and distribution of Alaq within the deep waters.A tentative mass balance model of Alaq in the oceanic system is proposed that takes into account all of the presently known fluxes of Alaq to and through the oceans. To maintain the deep waters of the ocean at steady state, it is necessary to include in the model, processes that remove Alaq from these waters. Thus, model calculations support the conclusions drawn from observations that physico-chemical processes remove Alaq from deep waters. Finally, the proposed model is compatible with the concept that the entire oceanic system is at steady state with respect to dissolved Al. 相似文献

Dunes in the Martian north polar erg show two dominant orientations. When seen at frost cap minimum, dunes north of 80°N record east winds, dunes south of 80°N record west winds. Many of the transverse dunes are considered to be reversing dunes. Dunes in two fields may have reversed at least once during the lifetime of the Viking Orbiters. Poor agreement exists among published predictive models of north polar winds and the interpretations derived from the major published map of the north polar dunes. We propose that the average polar winds are: (1) strong, off-pole northwest winds in fall; (2) moderate west winds in winter; (3) latitude-dependent weak to strong off-pole northeast winds in spring; and (4) weak west winds in summer. Viking images of near-polar clouds confirm much of the hypothesis. Images discussed in other studies can be given alternative interpretations that support this hypothesis also. Over millenia, the combination of reversing west and east winds could produce the binodal distributions of dune orientations observed at the north pole. 相似文献

We present 8.0–13.0 micron spectra for six main belt asteroids, which range from 58 to 220 km in diameter and sample the five principal taxonomic classes (C, S, M, R and E). Narrow, well-defined silicate emission features are present on two of the asteroids, the C-type 19 Fortuna and the M-type 21 Lutetia. No comparable emission features are observed on the S-types 11 Parthenope and 14 Irene, the R-type 349 Dembowska or the E-type 64 Angelina. 相似文献
