This study provides a reconstruction of the Late Permian and Triassic depositional history of the Arabian shelf in the northern United Arab Emirates based on facies analysis and foraminiferal biostratigraphy. The presented data show that sedimentation occurred in three major sequences. From the Late Permian to Olenekian carbonates and evaporites were deposited in restricted lagoons and tidal flats. After a hiatus, sedimentation resumed and continued until the Late Ladinian/Carnian, leading to the deposition of a carbonate platform dominated by peritidal dolostones. A period of shelf exposure and erosion, spanning from the Carnian to Norian, was followed by the third major sequence with sedimentation into the Early Jurassic. During this third depositional sequence sedimentation changed from pure carbonate into mixed carbonate–siliciclastic deposits. This transition reflects the global regression of the sea in the Late Triassic (Triasina hantkeni Zone) and the increased erosion of large parts of the Arabian hinterland. A comparison of the evolution of the Arabian shelf in the study area with chronostratigraphic reference schemes for the Arabian Plate reveals remarkable differences in the distribution of Middle and Upper Triassic sequences. These are most likely the result of poor biostratigraphic control on previously studied formations in the region.  相似文献

The calcium isotope ratios (δ44Ca = [(44Ca/40Ca)sample/(44Ca/40Ca)standard −1] · 1000) of Orbulina universa and of inorganically precipitated aragonite are positively correlated to temperature. The slopes of 0.019 and 0.015‰ °C−1, respectively, are a factor of 13 and 16 times smaller than the previously determined fractionation from a second foraminifera, Globigerinoides sacculifer, having a slope of about 0.24‰ °C−1. The observation that δ44Ca is positively correlated to temperature is opposite in sign to the oxygen isotopic fractionation (δ18O) in calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These observations are explained by a model which considers that Ca2+-ions forming ionic bonds are affected by kinetic fractionation only, whereas covalently bound atoms like oxygen are affected by kinetic and equilibrium fractionation. From thermodynamic consideration of kinetic isotope fractionation, it can be shown that the slope of the enrichment factor α(T) is mass-dependent. However, for O. universa and the inorganic precipitates, the calculated mass of about 520 ± 60 and 640 ± 70 amu (atomic mass units) is not compatible with the expected ion mass for 40Ca and 44Ca. To reconcile this discrepancy, we propose that Ca diffusion and δ44Ca isotope fractionation at liquid/solid transitions involves Ca2+-aquocomplexes (Ca[H2O]n2+ · mH2O) rather than pure Ca2+-ion diffusion. From our measurements we calculate that such a hypothesized Ca2+-aquocomplex correlates to a hydration number of up to 25 water molecules (490 amu). For O. universa we propose that their biologically mediated Ca isotope fractionation resembles fractionation during inorganic precipitation of CaCO3 in seawater. To explain the different Ca isotope fractionation in O. universa and in G. sacculifer, we suggest that the latter species actively dehydrates the Ca2+-aquocomplex before calcification takes place. The very different temperature response of Ca isotopes in the two species suggests that the use of δ44Ca as a temperature proxy will require careful study of species effects.  相似文献

Groundwater flow in granitic bedrock is of major interest for underground projects such as radioactive waste disposal. It is generally accepted that granitic rocks of the upper crust are characterized as faulted low-porosity rocks showing fault-related permeability. In this study, the influence of existing faults on the present-day water flow in the Grimsel Test Site (Switzerland), an underground rock laboratory situated in granitoid rocks, was investigated by mapping water discharges. As a result, the link between water flow and faults considering slip-tendency analysis and fault intersections is evaluated. Water-conducting features were combined in a structural-permeability favorability map. Faults and dykes occur as three orientation groups, NE–SW, E–W, and NW–SE trending, all steeply dipping southwards with fault intersections also steeply plunging southwards. In total, 100 water discharges were mapped in summer 2014 and 85 in winter 2016, which are located along faults or fault intersections. A comparison of water discharges with structures showed that high-slip-tendency metabasic dykes and fault or dyke intersections represent the dominant flow paths. Further, it could be demonstrated that higher slip-tendency tends to lead to enhanced average hydraulic conductivity and therefore more constant water flow. Based on water fluxes, fault intersections are inferred to represent first-order locations of water percolation followed by high-slip-tendency metabasic dykes. The combination of all water-conducting features into a structural-permeability map results in covering all water discharges. Therefore, the structural-permeability favorability map can serve as suitable representation for constraining water inflow in fractured granitoid host rocks.  相似文献

We revise the conceptual model of calcite varves and present, for the first time, a dual lake monitoring study in two alkaline lakes providing new insights into the seasonal sedimentation processes forming these varves. The study lakes, Tiefer See in NE Germany and Czechowskie in N Poland, have distinct morphology and bathymetry, and therefore, they are ideal to decipher local effects on seasonal deposition. The monitoring setup in both lakes is largely identical and includes instrumental observation of (i) meteorological parameters, (ii) chemical profiling of the lake water column including water sampling, and (iii) sediment trapping at both bi-weekly and monthly intervals. We then compare our monitoring data with varve micro-facies in the sediment record. One main finding is that calcite varves form complex laminae triplets rather than simple couplets as commonly thought. Sedimentation of varve sub-layers in both lakes is largely dependent on the lake mixing dynamics and results from the same seasonality, commencing with diatom blooms in spring turning into a pulse of calcite precipitation in summer and terminating with a re-suspension layer in autumn and winter, composed of calcite patches, plant fragments and benthic diatoms. Despite the common seasonal cycle, the share of each of these depositional phases in the total annual sediment yield is different between the lakes. In Lake Tiefer See calcite sedimentation has the highest yields, whereas in Lake Czechowskie, the so far underestimated re-suspension sub-layer dominates the sediment accumulation. Even in undisturbed varved sediments, re-suspended material becomes integrated in the sediment fabric and makes up an important share of calcite varves. Thus, while the biogeochemical lake cycle defines the varves’ autochthonous components and micro-facies, the physical setting plays an important role in determining the varve sub-layers’ proportion.  相似文献

Springs located at the historical sites of Wadi Araba (Eastern Desert of Egypt) and emerging from the escarpments of the Northern and Southern Galala Plateaus were investigated. A combination of methods, including hydrochemistry, stable and radioisotope composition, and structural analyses based on satellite data, provided information about the structure of the subsurface and the derived groundwater flow paths. Satellite images reveal karst features within the northern plateau, e.g. conical landforms. Karstic caves were documented along both escarpments. Chemical analysis of floodwater from Wadi Araba indicates higher concentrations of terrestrial salts compared to floodwaters from central and southern parts of the desert. δ18O and δ2H signatures in spring waters resemble those of floodwater and fall on the global meteoric water line, confirming their fast infiltration with minor influence of evaporation. The aquifer feeding the springs of the Northern Galala Plateau has low retention and the springs dry out quickly, even after heavy rainfall. Contrastingly, 3H activities in springs emerging from the Southern Galala Plateau refer to much slower subsurface passage. With respect to 3H content (3.8 TU) in recent flood waters, the spring water at Southern Galala Plateau contains about 40% recently recharged groundwater. However, its largest spring—the St. Antony spring—discharges water with a radiocarbon age of about 15,000 years. In combination with this spring’s constant and high discharge over a period of several months, that age estimate suggests a large reservoir with moderate to high retention.
