This article discusses the various steps that the authors feel are necessary to the successful progression of an engineered
project sited in karst terrain. The procedures require a multidisciplined approach with liaison and cooperation among the
various parties to the project.
Initially, the prospective owner must have sufficient understanding of the potential engineering problems to incorporate the
engineering geologist into the early stages of any planned acquisition. The first step in an investigation should include
a review of the available geologic information, aerial photo interpretation, consultation with the State Geological Survey,
and a geologic reconnaissance of the prospective site and surrounding area.
A go-no-go decision as to purchase can often been made at an early time. Although, in some instances, more study is needed
for a particularly intriguing property.
The second stage should consider the various planning alternatives that are feasible based upon the limited available information.
At this stage planning/purchase decisions can be made as to purchasing options, value of the property, design constraints,
and the possible economic penalties that could be associated with the potential site construction. Various planning and construction
alternatives should be considered in this phase of the work.
The third stage should include a site investigation program of moderate size, consisting of test pits and/or exploratory borings.
The borings should be drilled using water as the drilling fluid, with an experienced crew and qualified technical inspection.
The authors find the use of geophysical techniques can be extremely misleading unless used in conjunction with exploratory
drilling. Successful evaluations using geophysical procedures occur only under ideal conditions.
The geotechnical viability of the plan and preliminary design should be investigated in the fourth phase. Additionally, the
physical parameters required for the design of structures founded atop cavities can be obtained at this time. Several support
schemes which incorporate cavity roof thickness, rock strength, and cavity space are discussed.
Possible construction procedures include excavation and dental concrete, grouting, piers or piles to sound rock, or moving
to another area. The relative economies of these procedures are discussed in relation to the size and depth of the soil or
rock cavity, possible future cavity formation, magnitude of loading and acceptable safety factors. 相似文献

Presence of young groundwater (post-1950) in the Goose River basin is demonstrated with 3H and 85Kr analyses. A total of 96 wells and four springs were sampled quarterly from 1999 to 2001 to determine the extent of any recent recharge and to what depth hydraulic continuity existed in the groundwatershed (33.3 km2). Recharge groundwater is less than 50 years in about 31% (3H) to 37% (85Kr) of sampled wells and 75% of sampled springs. Young groundwater ages are recorded in wells up to 320 m in depth within fractured- and arsenic-bearing crystalline bedrock. Total arsenic 10 g L–1 occurs significantly in drinking water with young groundwater flowing through the pumping well intervals. Astotal occurs in 89% (85Kr) to 93% (3H) of all wells with post-1950 groundwater ages. Young groundwater recharge and elevated geogenic arsenic were discovered only in the anatectic granitoids and migmatized country rock of the southwestern part of the Goose River basin. 相似文献

Building stones manufactured from contact metamorphic slates (Fruchtschiefer slate) from Theuma (Sachsen, Germany) were investigated for mineralogical alterations as well as for changes in porosity and surface roughness due to weathering. After weathering periods of several years to decades, the originally dark gray-colored slates show pale spots of several centimeters in size at the surface of building stones. The dark-colored and light-colored sections of the slate show no differences in mineralogy. Surface weathering did not result in newly precipitated minerals. It was also found that the observed differences in color are not caused by variations in sedimentary organic carbon concentration or in sulfide/sulfate concentrations. Obtained results instead indicate that dark surface sections may show a thin cover of recent organic matter (OM), e.g., living OM, soot, dirt, etc. Microscopic investigations suggested that this cover was exfoliated at light-colored surface sections. The observed disaggregation of the upper 2 mm of the building block material results in an increase in porosity. Porosity of black (unweathered) slate is <2 vol.%. Due to weathering, the slate’s pores with diameters >1 μm show a significant increase in frequency compared to the original pore size distribution. Porosity of weathered rock volumes increased to approx. 8 vol.%. Discolored surface sections show a higher surface roughness (root-mean-square roughness, Rq ~ 1 μm) compared to dark-colored slate surfaces (Rq ~ 200 nm), both data are for cleavage planes. Preferentially, the discolored surface sections are located close to the edges of cut stones. This and the alteration in porosity, pore size, and surface roughness indicate that color changes of the slate are largely influenced by rock disaggregation proceeding from the edges into the center rather than by mineral dissolution/precipitation processes. 相似文献

Four sediment traps of radically different design were deployed in the Santa Barbara Basin for approximately 45 days. The measured fluxes ranged from 370 to 774 g m?2 yr?1 for the different designs. These values lie within flux measurements previously determined for the basin. Compared to the 25-year record (920 g m?2 yr?1), however, all fluxes determined in this experiment are somewhat low. Because this experiment was conducted during a general period of high storm activity and runoff, measurement of greater than average flux was expected. It is probable that the higher flux recorded by the sediments results from a significant input of detritus into the basin by near bottom transport.The chemical composition of trapped material was nearly identical in all four trap designs. The deep cone design, however, had a significantly lower Mn content. Since this trap was the only one in which reducing conditions were produced in the sample container, reduction and mobilization of manganese after collection is believed to have occurred.In spite of the very different designs tested, the factor of two agreement in flux determination and the compositional similarity of the material collected is encouraging for future attempts to directly measure the flux of particulates in the ocean. 相似文献

The geology of Western and Central Europe is significantly influenced by the Variscan orogen that developed during Devonian and Carboniferous time. Numerical models are essential in understanding and quantifying the involved endogenous and exogenous processes and their interactions. These are mainly based on the large-scale mass redistribution caused by erosion and fluvial sedimentary transport. The sedimentary mass flux leads to changing loads on the lithosphere and affects therefore the evolution of the orogen and the foreland-basin. The complex feedback-mechanism of the surface and tectonic processes is studied by three-dimensional elastic–plastic numerical models. The calculated uplift rates are used to model the interaction between tectonic and surface processes such as erosion and sedimentation. An iterative application of the numerical models for the tectonic and surface processes yields a detailed view of the evolution of the foreland-basin. The tectonic model itself (excluding surface processes) already shows some of the palinspastically reconstructed important features of the lower Carboniferous like the London-Brabant Massif, and the northward propagation of the Variscan deformation front. The results obtained from the coupled analysis can be compared to studies of the sedimentary record (i.e. time, thickness, and sedimentation rates) and other geological concepts (i.e. stability of geological provinces). The results demonstrate that both processes are essential in understanding the complex structural evolution of the Variscides and their foreland. The numerical approach on the tectonic–surface process interaction can also be applied easily to other geological settings. 相似文献

The reductive amination of low‐molecular‐weight saccharides, uronic acids, and amino sugars, followed by a separation of the derivates by means of ion‐pair chromatography or RP‐HPLC, offers an interesting alternative to HPAEC‐PAD for the environmental analysis of these compounds. Under this aspect various potential amination reagents, i.e., p‐amino‐benzoic acid (p‐AMBA), p‐AMBA propyl ester, 1‐aminopyrene, 2‐(2‐aminophenyl)indole, and 4‐aminoazobenzene, were tested with regard to the formation of derivates and to the chromatographic properties of the formed derivates. p‐AMBA, p‐AMBA propyl ester and 4‐aminoazobenzene proved to be especially suited, because they facilitate the amination of all carbohydrate reference components together with a complete separation and sensible detection (detection limits < 0.5 mg/L) of the derivates. Mainly the following elution sequence was ascertained: amino sugars (hexosamines) / disaccharide(s) / monosaccharides (hexoses) / hexuronic acid(s) / N‐acetyl‐D‐glucosamine. Detection limits down to 0.1 μmol/L were realized using p‐AMBA as reagent, facilitating the determination of the target compounds in landfill leachates and lysimeter percolates. Applying the p‐AMBA propyl ester for derivatization, chromatographic interferences with weakly retained derivates and the coelution of the reagent with its galactosamine derivate can be avoided, since the ester elutes after its derivates unlike p‐AMBA itself. 相似文献

Atmospheric temperature and humidity fields as well as information on other meteorological parameters are nowadays retrieved from radiance measurements recorded by operational meteorological satellites. Up to now, the inversion procedures used only take into account crude information on the topography of the Earth’s surface. However, the applied radiative transfer codes have to consider the Earth’s surface as the lower boundary of the atmospheric model and, therefore, need a more precise mean elevation and a classification of the roughness of the Earth’s surface. The influence of the topography of the Earth surface on retrieved temperature profiles is studied by using a physico-statistical inversion method. An objective analysis is made of the more precise mean elevation and derivation of roughness parameters using a new high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) with a resolution of 500 m×500 m. By means of a geomorphological process and a newly developed topography rejection test, areas with a high surface roughness are localized and singled out. The influence of topography on the retrieved temperature profiles is illustrated by case studies. Changes are found predominantly in areas with a high variation of topography. Using the new high-resolution DEM and the topography rejection test, the geographical position of the calculated temperature profiles tends to be shifted towards areas with a small vertical variation of topography. The mean elevation determined by the new elevation model better characterizes the area observed. Hence, the temperature profiles can be calculated down to lower atmospheric levels. Furthermore, a guess profile better describing the atmospheric situation is selected by the more precise elevation. In addition, the temperature profiles obtained near the coast are improved considerably by the more precise determination of the surface property ‘sea’ and ‘land,’ respectively. Integration of an independent physical information such as topography leads, on average, to a slight improvement of the results of the physico-statistical inversion procedure. In some cases, however, significant improvements have been achieved regarding the desired accuracy of temperature profiles of the order of 1 K. In future, the spatial resolution of new high-resolution sounding instrumentation on the next generation of operational meteorological satellites will be increased. To exploit the resolving power of this new instrumentation, the different variation of the topography of the Earth surface, especially in regions with a high variation of topography, can be taken into account more precisely by using a high-resolution DEM. 相似文献
