Lunar phase is regarded as a key driver of reproductive development and spawning activity in prawns, but across smaller-temporal scales, other processes may have a significant influence. Here, we examined the effects of lunar phase and other abiotic variables on the reproductive development of an estuarine-dependent prawn, Metapenaeus bennettae Racek & Dall. We found that turbidity, salinity, water temperature and lunar phase each had a significant independent influence on the likelihood of female prawns being ripe throughout the spawning period. The likelihood of catching a ripe female increased on the new moon and first quarter of the moon and also during conditions of low turbidity, high salinity and high water temperature. For male prawns, however, significant interactions between salinity and lunar phase and also between turbidity and lunar phase were detected. These interactions indicated that salinity and turbidity have variable effects among the different lunar phases. Such complex relationships of reproductive timing and spawning success of M. bennettae, and potentially other aquatic species, are most likely adaptive responses to the highly variable conditions of estuarine environments.  相似文献

A study at the Penrice Soda Products Saltfields revealed that a “weed” blocking siphons in the lower salinity end of the fields was a bryozoan,Zoobotryon verticillatum (della Chiaje). Further observations showed that this bryozoan grows from early October to mid June, dying off for 3 months during winter, and that it was commonly found in salinities of up to 56 grams per litre.  相似文献

Tight Entrance Cave (TEC) in southwestern Australia provides a Pleistocene sequence documenting the extinction of 14 large mammal species. This record has been interpreted as indicating that extinctions did not occur during or before the penultimate glacial maximum (PGM) and that humans played a primary role in the extinctions. However, it remains possible that the majority of extinct megafauna persisted no later than the PGM. The TEC extinctions correspond with vegetation change, a cooling/drying trend, increased biomass burning, and increasingly unstable small mammal communities. The initiation of these trends predates human arrival on the continent and implies environmentally mediated extinctions.  相似文献

Abstract— –In March 2001, asteroid (25143) Itokawa, the target of the Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft mission, was in a favorable viewing geometry for ground‐based telescopic study. Visible/near‐infrared (VNIR) spectra (~~0.48 to 0.9 μm) obtained on March 24, 26, and 27 UT, and near‐infrared (NIR) spectra (~~0.75 to 2.5 μm) obtained on March 10, 11, 12, 23, and 24 UT collectively show absorption features centered near 1.0 and 2.0 μm, which are indicative of olivine and pyroxene. Analyses of these absorption features indicate an abundance ratio of olivine to pyroxene of approximately 75:25 ± 5, respectively, with no significant variation in the relative abundance of these minerals across its surface on a regional scale. The band center positions indicate that the mean pyroxene chemistry is ~~Wo14 ± 5Fs43 ± 5. There appear to be at least two pyroxene components: primarily a low‐Ca orthopyroxene accompanied by a spectrally significant (~~15–20%) high Fe‐rich pigeonite phase. The mean pyroxene composition is significantly more Fe‐rich than the Fs14–26 range found in ordinary chondrites. These pyroxene compositions are suggestive of phases crystallized from partial melts. This would indicate that the parent body of (25143) Itokawa reached temperatures sufficient to initiate partial melting (~~1050 to 1250 °C), but that it did not attain the degree of melting required for significant melt mobilization and efficient segregation of the basaltic melt component from the unmelted residual olivine portion. Itokawa's spectral band parameters place it near the S(III)/S(IV) boundary, but within the S(III) taxonomic field. In meteoritic nomenclature, Itokawa would be most analogous to an olivine‐rich primitive achondrite. Alternatively, if the high Fs value is not related to partial melting, then Itokawa could also represent a rare atypical LL chondrite, or a previously unsampled oxidized Fe‐rich chondritic‐like assemblage.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the first correlation of derived mineral abundances of V-class Asteroid 1929 Kollaa, 4 Vesta, and the HED meteorites. We demonstrate that 1929 Kollaa has a basaltic composition consistent with an origin within the crustal layer of 4 Vesta, and show a plausible genetic connection between Kollaa and the cumulate eucrite meteorites. These data support the proposed delivery mechanism of HED meteorites to the Earth from Vesta, and provide the first mineralogical constraint derived from the observation of a small V-class, Vesta family asteroid on the crustal thickness of 4 Vesta.  相似文献

Commodities such as oil and gas occur in isolated reservoirs or accumulations, more generically called basic units here. To understand a study area’s economic potential and to craft plans for exploration and development, resource analysts often aggregate (sum, accumulate) basic unit magnitudes in distinct spatial subsets of the study area and then appraise the total area’s potential by summing these intermediate sums. In a probabilistic approach, magnitudes are modeled as random variables. Some have asked, “Do different methods of partitioning basic units into subsets lead to different probability distributions for the sum of all basic unit magnitudes?” Any method of aggregation of basic unit magnitudes which obeys the rules of probability leads to the same probability distribution of the sum of all unit magnitudes as that computed by direct summation of all basic unit magnitudes. A Monte Carlo simulation of a synthetic example in which the magnitude of resource in each unit is marginally lognormal and pairwise correlations among basic unit magnitudes are specified illustrates key features of probabilistic aggregation. The joint distribution of certain pairs of aggregates are closely approximated by a bivariate lognormal distribution.  相似文献

The spectral reflectance (0.32–1.06 μm) of Mercury was measured during two elongations, September–October 1974 and March 1975. The spectra are much improved over the previously available measurements. The reflectance increases almost linearly with wavelength and no electronic transition absorption bands are evident to the precision of the data. The new spectra agree very well with the reflectance of mature lunar mare and upland soils and are dissimilar to those of any other observed solar system object. This suggests that the surface materials and the weathering processes controlling their optical properties are similar for both the Moon and Mercury. Differences between the spectra for the two observation periods may indicate differences in the average composition for the different regions of Mercury observed.  相似文献

Expansion and heterogeneous clustering of commercial horticulture within the central highlands of Kenya after the mid-1990s impact watersheds and the sustainable resource management. This is distressing since climate conditions for world horticultural regions are projected to change, making such farming extremely difficult and costly to the environment. To understand the scope of impact on vegetation, the study evaluated (1) interannual variability in averaged normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI); (2) trends in average annual NDVI before and after 1990 – the presumed onset of rapid horticulture; and (3) relationship between the average annual NDVI and large-scale commercial farms, population density, and mean annual rainfall in subwatersheds. Time-series analysis of long-term Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies NDVI data were analyzed as indicator of vegetation condition. NDVI trends before 1990s (1982–1989) and after 1990s (1990–2006) were evaluated to determine the slope (sign), and the Spearman’s correlation coefficient (strength). Overall, results show considerable variations in vegetation condition due largely to mixed factors including intensive farming activities, drought, and rainfall variation. Statistical analysis shows significant differences in slopes before 1990 and after 1990 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.1 respectively). Negative (decline) trends were common after 1990, linked to increased commercial horticulture and related anthropogenic disturbances on land cover. There was decline in vegetation over densely populated subwatersheds, though low NDVI values in 1984 and 2000 were the effect of severe droughts. Understanding the linkage between vegetation responses to the effects of human-induced pressure at the subwatershed scale can help natural resource managers approach conservation measures more effectively.  相似文献

Hydrothermal activity is common in the Tatun Volcano Group of northern Taiwan. Helium isotopic compositions of fumarolic samples show that mantle component occupies more than 60% in the previous study. Along with recent seismic results, a magma reservoir is inferred to have existed beneath the area of Da-you-keng, where fumarolic venting is the most active in Tatun Volcano Group. Progressive increases of HCl concentrations and SO2/H2S ratio in fumaroles from Da-you-keng have been observed since August 2004. The HCl concentration changed from almost the detection limit to thousands of ppm, even up to 30,000 ppm. SO2/H2S ratios varied from almost 0 to 3; hence SO2 became the dominated S species in this area. These variations were accompanied by rising temperature of fumaroles in the Tatun Volcano Group, especially in the area of Da-you-keng (from boiling point to 131 °C). Meanwhile, 3He/4He ratios showed a decreasing trend but returned to normal values shortly thereafter. We propose two possible processes, 1) new magma supply and 2) recent opening of fractures in local area, to explain these observations. Based on the change of 3He/4He ratio and lack of ground deformation, we consider the latter might be more plausible.  相似文献
