The East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia faces the South China Sea and is vulnerable to oil pollution because of intense petroleum production activities in the area. The South China Sea is also a favored route for supertankers carrying crude oil to the Far East. Consequently, oil spills can occur, causing pollution and contamination in the surrounding areas. Residual oil spills stranded on coastal beaches usually end up as tar-balls. Elucidating the sources of tar-balls using a molecular marker approach is essential in assessing environmental impacts and perhaps settling legal liabilities for affected parties. This study utilizes a multimodal molecular marker approach through the use of diagnostic ratios of alkanes, hopanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to determine the source, distribution and weathering of tar-balls. Hopane ratios (e.g., C29/C30, and summation C31-C35/C30 ratios) were used to identify the sources of tar-balls. The weathering effects were distinguished by using alkanes, namely the unresolved complex mixture (UCM) and low molecular weight/high molecular weight (L/H) ratios. Similarly, PAHs were also used for the determination of weathering processes undergone by the tar-balls. This multimodal molecular marker gave a very strong indication of the sources of tar-balls in this study. For example, 16 out of 17 samples originated from South East Asian Crude Oil (SEACO) with one sample from Merang, Terengganu originating from North Sea Oil (Troll). The TRME-2 sample may have come from a supertanker's ballast water discharge. The second possibility is that the tar-ball may have been transported via oceanographic currents. All 'weathered' sample characterizations were based on the presence of UCM and other ratios. The multimodal molecular marker approach applied in this study has enabled us to partially understand the transport behavior of tar-balls in the marine environment and has revealed insights into the weathering process of tar-balls. 相似文献

We have studied solar activity by analyzing naked-eye sunspot observations and aurorae borealis observed at latitudes below \(45^{\circ}\). We focused on the medieval epoch by considering the non-telescopic observations of sunspots from AD 974 to 1278 and aurorae borealis from AD 965 to 1273 that are reported in several Far East historical sources, primarily in China and Korea. After setting selection rules, we analyzed the distribution of these individual events following the months of the Gregorian calendar. In December, an unusual peak is observed with data recorded in both China and Japan, but not within Korean data.In extreme conditions, where the collection of events is reduced and discontinuous in some temporal intervals, we used the non-parametric kernel method. We opted for the plug-in approach of Sheather and Jones instead of cross-validation techniques to estimate the probability density functions (pdf) of the events. We obtained optimized bandwidths of 13.29 years for sunspots and 9.06 years for auroras, and 95% confidence intervals. The pdf curves exhibit multiple peaks occurring at quasi-periodic times with a very high positive correlation, \(r_{\mathrm{tt}} = 0.9958\), between the dates of occurrence of the nine extrema of sunspots and auroras. Furthermore, these extrema enabled us to evaluate mean periods at two standard deviations, \(66.77 \pm 7.25~\mbox{years}\) for sunspots and \(65.06 \pm 9.36~\mbox{years}\) for auroras. The accuracy of the average periods, 62.00 years for sunspots and 61.80 years for auroras, was improved by the use of the power spectrum method. The percentage of the total number of non-observed sunspots, using redundant data, from AD 1151 to 1275 was estimated to be greater than or equal to 78%. 相似文献

Metallothionein was quantified in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with different Cu, Cd and Hg doses (50-250 microg kg(-1) wet wt) after 48 h exposure. A distinct peak with 16.8 min retention time was obtained by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography coupled to fluorescence detection (RP-HPLC-FD) with the three metals. Total metallothionein levels assayed in unheated liver extracts by RP-HPLC-FD were significantly higher (1.3-1.95-fold) than those obtained by the well-established spectrophotometric method. In the RP-HPLC-FD method, metallothionein increased linearly with Cu and Hg doses, being saturated beyond 100 mug kg(-1) Cd. Maximum induction was obtained at 100 microg kg(-1) Cd (5.3-fold), and 250 microg kg(-1) Cu or Hg (8- and 5.1-fold, respectively). In this study, the poro-thermoelastic problem with the effect of the magnetic field and Seebeck parameter was investigated. Modified Ohm's law that includes effects of the temperature gradient (Seebeck effect) and charge density, as well as generalized Fourier's law with current density, is introduced. We applied normal mode analysis to solve the resulting nondimensional coupled equations and then investigated the effects that nondimensional displacements, temperature distribution, excess pore water pressure, stresses, and induced magnetic field exerted on the poro-thermoelastic half-space medium. The structural pattern, tectono-sedimentary framework and geodynamic evolution for Mesozoic and Cenozoic deep structures of the Gulf of Tunis (north-eastern Tunisia) are proposed using petroleum well data and a 2-D seismic interpretation. The structural system of the study area is marked by two sets of faults that control the Mesozoic subsidence and inversions during the Paleogene and Neogene times: (i) a NE-SW striking set associated with folds and faults, which have a reverse component; and (ii) a NW–SE striking set active during the Tertiary extension episodes and delineating grabens and subsiding synclines. In order to better characterize the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Gulf of Tunis structures, seismic data interpretations are compared to stratigraphic and structural data from wells and neighbouring outcrops. The Atlas and external Tell belonged to the southernmost Tethyan margin record a geodynamic evolution including: (i) rifting periods of subsidence and Tethyan oceanic accretions from Triassic until Early Cretaceous: we recognized high subsiding zones (Raja and Carthage domains), less subsiding zones (Gamart domain) and a completely emerged area (Raouad domain); (ii) compressive events during the Cenozoic with relaxation periods of the Oligocene-Aquitanian and Messinian-Early Pliocene. The NW–SE Late Eocene and Tortonian compressive events caused local inversions with sealed and eroded folded structures. During Middle to Late Miocene and Early Pliocene, we have identified depocentre structures corresponding to half-grabens and synclines in the Carthage and Karkouane domains. The north–south contractional events at the end of Early Pliocene and Late Pliocene periods are associated with significant inversion of subsidence and synsedimentary folded structures. Structuring and major tectonic events, recognized in the Gulf of Tunis, are linked to the common geodynamic evolution of the north African and western Mediterranean basins. 相似文献

High levels of fluoride concentration were observed in deep groundwater of the Mizunami area in Central Japan. Fluoride occurs
mainly due to the reaction between granitic basement rock and groundwater. Granites were collected, crushed to powder, and
then allowed to react with purified water for 80 days. Water–rock interaction results showed that the major factor affecting
fluoride concentration is the residence time of the groundwater. Coexisting ions have also some contribution toward fluoride
concentration. The groundwater residence time in the Mizunami area was estimated by applying results of water–rock interaction
to correspond with field data. A regression model relating fluoride concentration, residence time, and coexisting ions was
developed. The parameters of the regression model were determined using the genetic algorithms technique. Residence time was
estimated by extrapolating experimental data to correspond with filed data. Near the recharge area, residence times in the
potential fluoride source rock varied between 1 and 2,000 years, whereas near the discharge area residence times were in excess
of tens of thousands of years. The groundwater residence time was also estimated by the groundwater particle-tracking-flow
model. The estimates of groundwater residence time based on geochemical regression model were often larger than estimates
of groundwater residence time developed by particle-tracking analysis using a groundwater flow model. There were large uncertainties—on
the order of 10–10,000 years—in the estimates based on geochemical data. 相似文献

Wind action is the most dominant agent for erosion and deposition in the vast Western Desert of Egypt. Analysis of wind data
from seven meteorological stations distributed along the Western Desert reveals that this desert is characterized by high-energy
wind environments along the northern and southern edges and low-energy wind environments throughout the rest of the desert.
Accordingly, sand drift potential follows the pattern of wind energy. Maximum sand drift potential was observed at the southern
edge (571 vector units, which equals 40 m3/m width/year). Sand drift direction was observed towards the southeast except at the southern part of the desert where the
trend of sand movement was towards southwest. The major dune type recognized on satellite images was the simple linear type.
Linear dunes are generally associated with bimodal wind regime. Rates of sand drift potential and sand dune migration were
greatest at East of Owinate region at the extreme southern part of the desert. Measurements of crescentic sand dune advance
from two satellite images reveal a maximum advance rate of about 9 m/year at the southern part of the desert. Dune movement
creates potential hazard to the infrastructures in this open desert. 相似文献
