Source‐to‐sink studies and numerical modelling software are increasingly used to better understand sedimentary basins, and to predict sediment distributions. However, predictive modelling remains problematic in basins dominated by salt tectonics. The Lower Cretaceous delta system of the Scotian Basin is well suited for source‐to‐sink studies and provides an opportunity to apply this approach to a region experiencing active salt tectonism. This study uses forward stratigraphic modelling software and statistical analysis software to produce predictive stratigraphic models of the central Scotian Basin, test their sensitivity to different input parameters, assess proposed provenance pathways, and determine the distribution of sand and factors that control sedimentation in the basin. Models have been calibrated against reference wells and seismic surfaces, and implement a multidisciplinary approach to define simulation parameters. Simulation results show that previously proposed provenance pathways for the Early Cretaceous can be used to generate predictive stratigraphic models, which simulate the overall sediment distribution for the central Scotian Basin. Modelling confirms that the shaly nature of the Naskapi Member is the result of tectonic diversion of the Sable and Banquereau rivers and suggests additional episodic diversion during the deposition of the Cree Member. Sand is dominantly trapped on the shelf in all units, with transport into the basin along salt corridors and as a result of turbidity current flows occurring in the Upper Missisauga Formation and Cree Member. This led to sand accumulation in minibasins with a large deposit seawards of the Tantallon M‐41 well. Sand also appears to bypass the basin via salt corridors which lead to the down‐slope edge of the study area. Sensitivity analysis suggests that the grain size of source sediments to the system is the controlling factor of sand distribution. The methodology applied to this basin has applications to other regions complicated by salt tectonics, and where sediment distribution and transport from source‐to‐sink remain unclear. 相似文献

We present measurements from 2006 of the marine wind speed profile at a site located 18 km from the west coast of Denmark
in the North Sea. Measurements from mast-mounted cup anemometers up to a height of 45 m are extended to 161 m using LiDAR
observations. Atmospheric turbulent flux measurements performed in 2004 with a sonic anemometer are compared to a bulk Richardson
number formulation of the atmospheric stability. This is used to classify the LiDAR/cup wind speed profiles into atmospheric
stability classes. The observations are compared to a simplified model for the wind speed profile that accounts for the effect
of the boundary-layer height. For unstable and neutral atmospheric conditions the boundary-layer height could be neglected,
whereas for stable conditions it is comparable to the measuring heights and therefore essential to include. It is interesting
to note that, although it is derived from a different physical approach, the simplified wind speed profile conforms to the
traditional expressions of the surface layer when the effect of the boundary-layer height is neglected. 相似文献

Although the identification of the moisture sources of a region is of prominent importance to characterize precipitation, the origin and amount of moisture towards the Indian Subcontinent and its relationship with the occurrence of precipitation are still not completely understood. In this article, the origin of the atmospheric water arriving to the Western and Southern India during a period of 5 years (1 January 2000–31 December 2004) is investigated by using a Lagrangian diagnosis method. This methodology computes budgets of evaporation minus precipitation by calculating changes in the specific humidity of thousands of air particles aimed to the study area following the observed winds. During the summer monsoon, the main supply of moisture is the Somali Jet, which crosses the equator by the West Indian Ocean. The recycling process is the main water vapour source in winter. Two additional moisture sources located over northwestern India and the Bay of Bengal are identified. A 30% increase in the moisture flux from the Indian Ocean has been related to the occurrence of strong precipitation in the area, and at the end of the monsoon, the recycling became a significant contribution to the last part of the wet season of Western and Southern India. Quaternary volcanism in the Central Cordillera of Costa Rica has created an orographic barrier that concentrates rainfall on its northern side. This humid climate produces weathered bedrock prone to landsliding. Ash fall from explosive eruptions kills the vegetation cover and intensifies erosion processes. These eruptions, hydrothermal activity and associated earthquakes destabilize the slopes of river valleys, and even the volcanic edifices, producing landslides and large debris avalanches. All these processes mobilize an extra sediment input that is deposited in the piedmont lowlands forming the Santa Clara megafan. The megafans described in the literature mainly grow according to climatic fluctuations; however, sedimentation in the Santa Clara megafan is also controlled by endogenic processes with longer recurrence periods. Analysis of this megafan provides new insight into the origin and evolution of these landforms. In volcanic regions, active volcanism should be considered when investigating the formation of some megafans. 相似文献

In this paper we study an isolated high-mountain (Sierra Nevada, SE Iberian Peninsula) to identify the potential trends in
the habitat-suitability of five key species (i.e. species that domain a given vegetation type and drive the conditions for
appearance of many other species) corresponding to four vegetation types occupying different altitudinal belts, that might
result from a sudden climatic shift. We used topographical variables and downscaled climate warming simulations to build a
high-resolution spatial database (10 m) according to four different climate warming scenarios for the twenty-first century.
The spatial changes in the suitable habitat were simulated using a species distribution model, in order to analyze altitudinal
shifts and potential habitat loss of the key species. Thus, the advance and receding fronts of known occurrence locations
were computed by introducing a new concept named differential suitability, and potential patterns of substitution among the key species were established. The average mean temperature trend show an
increase of 4.8°C, which will induce the vertical shift of the suitable habitat for all the five key species considered at
an average rate of 11.57 m/year. According to the simulations, the suitable habitat for the key species inhabiting the summit
area, where most of the endemic and/or rare species are located, may disappear before the middle of the century. The other
key species considered show moderate to drastic suitable habitat loss depending on the considered scenario. Climate warming
should provoke a strong substitution dynamics between species, increasing spatial competition between both of them. In this
study, we introduce the application of differential suitability concept into the analysis of potential impact of climate change, forest management and environmental monitoring, and discuss
the limitations and uncertainties of these simulations. 相似文献

This article aims to explain and demonstrate the origin and development of a subsidence basin caused by coal mining as well as to point out important aspects of this phenomenon in engineering geology. Engineering geology needs to deal with a number of issues related to the origin and development of subsidence basins in areas affected by deep coal mining. An interesting case study from the Upper-Silesian Basin in the northeast of the Czech Republic near the Polish border is presented in this paper. There is a clear time chronological succession in the ground surface changes manifested by a ground subsidence gradation, both in their absolute values as well as in their spatial distribution. The phenomenon is documented by aerial photo time series, which optimally depict the origin and development of the subsidence. In the study area, there are changes in the landscape elements and it is essential to be considered in future land use plans. The marginal conditions of the Quaternary geological structure and hydrogeological conditions are responsible for an unconfined aquifer which manifests there as a water body in an undrained depression in the course of the ground subsidence. 相似文献

In September 2014, the state of Baja California Sur (BCS), Mexico, was struck by hurricane Odile. The hurricane caused extensive damage to the infrastructure of the state of BCS, where the energy and water supply were interrupted for several days. The direct economic impact was estimated to be more than 1654 million USD. Considering this damage, few days after the cyclonic event, a technical visit to BCS was carried out. The objective of this study is to present the relevant information on the performance of the infrastructure observed after the event, and to make recommendations in order to mitigate the effects of future cyclonic storms in Mexico, based on the observations during the technical visit. The main causes of damage were the use of materials for non-structural elements with a weak performance under high wind speeds, failures in the design and construction of connections of structural and non-structural elements, accumulated damage, lack of maintenance and impact of wind-born debris, as well as the absence of a building code in the region. Background information about meteorological and climatological aspects of the cyclones that have affected the southern region of BCS, the characteristics of hurricane Odile, the analysis of structural damages and the conclusions, are also presented. 相似文献

This paper examines circular labour migration between Australia and the Philippines by bringing Australian immigration policies and Philippine diaspora strategies under the same analytical framework. An extensive Philippine bureaucracy regulates migrants at each stage of the circular migration cycle, and as a sending state it has an interest in migrants staying temporarily in host countries such as Australia. The requirement to return home at the end of an overseas work contract compels migrants to remain attached to the sending state, their homeland, and return subsequently. However, Australia is allowing a route for temporary migrants to apply for permanent residency while in the host country. This has implications for sending states that rely on migrant ties to the homeland. The paper argues that analysing the intersections between the themes of migration, development and diaspora strategies reveals the multiple meanings of temporariness during migration and in migration studies. It questions whether associating temporariness with precariousness and marginalization is an accurate representation of the complex conditions underpinning circular labour migration. 相似文献

The transversal fault zone Vlora-Elbasan-Dibra (VED)with Northeastern strike dislocated the structure ofAlbanides along all their width. This transversalfault is distinguished by the flexure of Lushnja, thediapire dome of Dumrea, the transversal Quaternarydepression of Elbasani, the belt of transversalstructure of Labinoti, and then it continues towardsNortheast with transversal horst of Golloborda andgoes toward FYROM in NE direction. In the Southwesternpart of this transversal fault, near Fieri town, themolasse subsided toward North. The structures ofIonian and Kruja zone, near this transversal fault,also subsided and uplifted more toward North. Throughmarine investigation a transversal fault with ENEstrike direction was discovered near the Northern partof Sazani Island (Aliaj et al., 1996). We think itmay belong to the big transversal fault zone VED.The transversal fault zone VED is clearlyoutlined by the location of strong and weakearthquakes, migration of foci along this fault, themacroseismic field and focal mechanisms. Generally,along this transversal fault it is the transtensionalstrike-slip dextral motion that dominates.In our studies the transversal fault zoneVlora-Elbasani-Dibra was considered to be the mostpotential transversal seismogenetic belt in Albaniaand nearby.
