The nature of cometary volatile materials is subject to debate. Theoretical models of cometary nuclei and laboratory studies suggest that these objects could be made of amorphous water ice in addition to other volatile molecules and refractory grains. This water ice structure has the ability to encapsulate the gases of surrounding environment, reflecting the physical and chemical conditions during their deposition. Therefore, the knowledge of the chemical composition of volatile molecules trapped in amorphous water ice provides a tool for probing the formation environment of cometary ice grains. Experimental studies of gas trapping efficiency in amorphous water ice have been previously conducted mostly under kinetic conditions, where dynamic pumping and temperature gradients prevented rigorous calibrations. In this work, we investigated the trapping efficiencies of Ar, CO, CH4, Kr and N2 by depositing water vapor as ice in the presence of trace gases in a volume submerged in liquid nitrogen at 77 K. The gas trapping efficiencies were determined simply by monitoring the pressure difference of the trace gases before and after the deposition of a known amount of water molecules as amorphous ice.Our results show that the trapped gas to water molecule ratio in amorphous ice is controlled primarily by the partial pressure of the gas during water ice deposition, and is independent of the ice deposition rate as well as the gas to water ratio in the vapor phase. The trapping efficiencies of gases decrease in the order of Kr > CH4 > CO > Ar > N2 in accordance with previous studies. Assuming that the water ice structure of comets is at least partially amorphous water ice at the time of their formation, these results suggest that the total pressure and composition of the surrounding environment of amorphous ice formation are significant controlling factors of trace gas concentrations in cometary ice. This further indicates that the evolution of the solar nebula and timing of cometary ice condensation can also be important parameters in linking the volatile contents of comets and their formation process. 相似文献

We use the Millennium Simulation (MS) to measure the cross-correlation between halo centres and mass (or equivalently the average density profiles of dark haloes) in a Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. We present results for radii in the range 10 h −1 kpc < r < 30 h −1 Mpc and for halo masses in the range 4 × 1010 < M 200 < 4 × 1014 h −1 M⊙ . Both at z = 0 and at z = 0.76 these cross-correlations are surprisingly well fitted if the inner region is approximated by a density profile of NFW or Einasto form, the outer region by a biased version of the linear mass autocorrelation function, and the maximum of the two is adopted where they are comparable. We use a simulation of galaxy formation within the MS to explore how these results are reflected in cross-correlations between galaxies and mass. These are directly observable through galaxy–galaxy lensing. Here also we find that simple models can represent the simulation results remarkably well, typically to ≲10 per cent. Such models can be used to extend our results to other redshifts, to cosmologies with other parameters, and to other assumptions about how galaxies populate dark haloes. Our galaxy formation simulation already reproduces current galaxy–galaxy lensing data quite well. The characteristic features predicted in the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal should provide a strong test of the ΛCDM cosmology as well as a route to understanding how galaxies form within it. 相似文献

The two orders of magnitude drop between the measured atmospheric abundances of non-radiogenic argon, krypton and xenon in Earth versus Mars is striking. Here, in order to account for this difference, we explore the hypothesis that clathrate deposits incorporated into the current martian cryosphere have sequestered significant amounts of these noble gases assuming they were initially present in the paleoatmosphere in quantities similar to those measured on Earth (in mass of noble gas per unit mass of the planet). To do so, we use a statistical-thermodynamic model that predicts the clathrate composition formed from a carbon dioxide-dominated paleoatmosphere whose surface pressure ranges up to 3 bars. The influence of the presence of atmospheric sulfur dioxide on clathrate composition is investigated and we find that it does not alter the trapping efficiencies of other minor species. Assuming nominal structural parameters for the clathrate cages, we find that a carbon dioxide equivalent pressure of 0.03 and 0.9 bar is sufficient to trap masses of xenon and krypton, respectively, equivalent to those found on Earth in the clathrate deposits of the cryosphere. In this case, the amount of trapped argon is not sufficient to explain the measured Earth/Mars argon abundance ratio in the considered pressure range. In contrast, with a 2% contraction of the clathrate cages, masses of xenon, krypton and argon at least equivalent to those found on Earth can be incorporated into clathrates if one assumes the trapping of carbon dioxide at equivalent atmospheric pressures of ~2.3 bar. On voyages in the Iceland Basin in 2007 and 2009, we observed low (ca. 0.1 nM) total dissolved iron concentrations [dFe] in surface waters (<150 m), which increased with depth to ca. 0.2–0.9 nM. The surface water [dFe] was low due to low atmospheric Fe inputs combined with biological uptake, with Fe regeneration from microbial degradation of settling biogenic particles supplying dFe at depth. The organic ligand concentrations [LT] in the surface waters ranged between 0.4 and 0.5 nM, with conditional stability constants (log K′FeL) between 22.6 and 22.7. Furthermore, [LT] was in excess of [dFe] throughout the water column, and dFe was therefore largely complexed by organic ligands (>99%). The ratio of [LT]/[dFe] was used to analyse trends in Fe speciation. Enhanced and variable [LT]/[dFe] ratios ranging between 1.6 and 5.8 were observed in surface waters; the ratio decreased with depth to a more constant [LT]/[dFe] ratio in deep waters. In the Iceland Basin and Rockall Trough, enhanced [LT]/[dFe] ratios in surface waters resulted from decreases in [dFe], likely reflecting the conditions of Fe limitation of the phytoplankton community in the surface waters of the Iceland Basin and the high productivity in the Rockall Trough.Below the surface mixed layer, the observed increase in [dFe] resulted in a decrease of the [LT]/[dFe] ratios (1.2–2.6) with depth. This indicated that the Fe binding ligand sites became occupied and even almost saturated at enhanced [dFe] in the deeper waters. Furthermore, our results showed a quasi-steady state in deep waters between dissolved organic Fe ligands and dFe, reflecting a balance between Fe removal by scavenging and Fe supply by remineralisation of biogenic particles with stabilisation through ligands. 相似文献

We present circumstantial evidence that the central region of the edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 4570, which harbours a 150-pc scale nuclear disc in addition to its main outer disc, has been shaped under the influence of a small (∼ 500 pc) bar. This is based on the discovery of two edge-on rings, the locations of which are consistent with the inner Lindblad and ultraharmonic resonances of a rapidly tumbling triaxial potential. Observed features in the photometry and rotation curve correspond nicely with the positions of the main resonances, strengthening the case for a tumbling bar potential. The relative blue colour of the ILR ring, and the complete absence of any detected ISM, indicates that the nuclear ring is made of relatively young (≲ 2 Gyr) stars. We discuss a possible secular evolution scenario for this complex multicomponent galaxy, which may also apply to many other S0 galaxies with observed rings and/or multiple disc components. 相似文献

We show that a steady mean-field dynamo in astrophysical rotators leads to an outflow of relative magnetic helicity and thus magnetic energy available for particle and wind acceleration in a corona. The connection between energy and magnetic helicity arises because mean-field generation is linked to an inverse cascade of magnetic helicity. To maintain a steady state in large magnetic Reynolds number rotators, there must then be an escape of relative magnetic helicity associated with the mean field, accompanied by an equal and opposite contribution from the fluctuating field. From the helicity flow, a lower limit on the magnetic energy deposited in the corona can be estimated. Steady coronal activity including the dissipation of magnetic energy, and formation of multi-scale helical structures therefore necessarily accompanies an internal dynamo. This highlights the importance of boundary conditions which allow this to occur for non-linear astrophysical dynamo simulations. Our theoretical estimate of the power delivered by a mean-field dynamo is consistent with that inferred from observations to be delivered to the solar corona, the Galactic corona, and Seyfert 1 AGN coronae. 相似文献

Spectra of Seyfert 1s are commonly modelled as emission from an X-ray-illuminated flat accretion disc orbiting a central black hole. This provides both reprocessed and direct components of the X-ray emission, as required by observations of individual objects, and possibly a fraction of the cosmological X-ray background. There is some observational motivation for us to at least consider the role that an effectively concave disc surface might play: (1) a reprocessed fraction ≳1/2 in some Seyferts and possibly in the X-ray background, and (2) the commonality of a sharp iron line peak for Seyferts at 6.4 keV despite a dependence of peak location on inclination angle for flat disc models. Here it is shown that a concave disc may not only provide a larger total fraction of reprocessed photons, but can also reprocess a much larger fraction of photons in its outer regions compared with a flat disc. This reduces the sensitivity of the 6.4-keV peak location to the inner disc inclination angle because the outer regions are less affected by Doppler and gravitational effects. If the X-ray source is isotropic, the reprocessed fraction is directly determined by the concavity. If the X-ray source is anisotropic, the location of iron line peak can still be determined by concavity but the total reflected fraction need not be as large as for the isotropic emitter case.
