Abstract– We report trace element analyses from mineral phases in chondrules from carbonaceous chondrites (Vigarano, Renazzo, and Acfer 187), carried out by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry. Results are similar in all three meteorites. Mesostasis has rare earth element (REE) concentrations of 10–20 × CI. Low‐Ca pyroxene has light REE (LREE) concentrations near 0.1 × CI and heavy REE (HREE) near 1 × CI, respectively. Olivine has HREE concentrations at 0.1–1 × CI and LREE around 10?2 × CI. The coarsest olivine crystals tend to have the most fractionated REE patterns, indicative of equilibrium partitioning. Low‐Ca pyroxene in the most pyroxene‐rich chondrules tends to have the lowest REE concentrations. Type I chondrules seem to have undergone a significant degree of batch crystallization (as opposed to fractional crystallization), which requires cooling rates slower than 1–100 K h?1. This would fill the gap between igneous calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions (CAIs) and type II chondrules. The anticorrelation between REE abundances and pyroxene mode may be understood as due to dilution by addition of silica to the chondrule melt, as in the gas‐melt interaction scenario of Libourel et al. (2006). The rapid cooling rate (of the order of 1000 K h?1) which seems recorded by low‐Ca pyroxene, contrasted with the more diverse record of olivine, may point to a nonlinear cooling history or suggest that formation of pyroxene‐rich chondrule margins was an event distinct from the crystallization of the interior.  相似文献

Fresh nephelinitic rocks and hydrothermally altered rocks at Mount Etinde (Cameroon Volcanic Line, West Africa) have been studied by combined whole rock geochemistry (ICP-MS), mineralogy and mineral chemistry (SEM-EDS, WDS, XRD) techniques. The nephelinites have feldspathoids, clinopyroxene, perovskite and titanomagnetite as the principal minerals in the mode with subsidiary apatite and sphene. The mineralogy of their hydrothermally altered counterparts includes phillipsite, calcite and analcime which are secondary phases developed in response to hydrothermal fluid events. Correspondingly, the bulk rock geochemical data show elevated SiO2, CaO, Na2O and K2O concentrations with increasing alteration and Al2O3 and Fe2O3 depletion while MgO, MnO and TiO2 concentrations are largely unaffected. The nephelinites also have high concentrations of LILLE, HFSE and REE and upon hydrothermal alteration they show an enrichment of LREE and MREE over HREE. Phillipsite is the principal alteration mineral in the rocks and it occurs along cracks, vesicles and also forms alteromorphs after feldspathoids. The Ce content of these categories of phillipsite varies. Phillipsite along cracks is richer in Ce while phillipsite associated with calcite has lower Ce concentration and the phillipsite alteromorphs very little or no Ce. Various stages of fluid circulation are proposed hereby to explain the variations in phillipsite generation and composition.  相似文献

Airborne magnetic data and Landsat imagery, as well as time-domain electromagnetic soundings, were used to assess groundwater potential of the region around the town of Mafikeng in North West Province, South Africa. Lineaments were extracted based on on-screen digital data derived from magnetic and Landsat 7 imagery. The relationship between lineament-intersection density and borehole yield was assessed using statistical analysis. The results were discussed with respect to factors that determine the groundwater potential of the area. Correlation between lineament-intersection frequency and borehole yield is 60?C65% in the south and southeastern parts, and 45?C50% within 5?C30?km radius of Mafikeng. The eastern and western parts of the study area are characterized by weak or no correlation. Areas that correspond to high correlation between lineament-intersection frequency and borehole yield suggest the significance of cross-cutting structures in controlling groundwater potential zones, while results that suggest low or no correlation represent the influence of other factors. The overall results demonstrate that the combined analysis of airborne magnetic data, satellite imagery, borehole yield and ground-based time-domain electromagnetic soundings provide the best approach for groundwater assessment within the hard rock and carbonate terrains of the study area.  相似文献

Three meta-igneous bodies from the Yaounde Group have been analyzed for their petrography, geochemistry, and 207Pb/206Pb zircon ages. According to their geochemical patterns, they represent meta-diorites. The meta-plutonites yielded identical zircon ages with a mean of 624?±?2?Ma interpreted as their intrusion age. This age is in agreement with previously published zircon ages of meta-diorites from the Yaounde Group. The meta-diorites derived mainly from crustal rocks with minor contribution from mantle material. The 87Rb/86Sr isochron ages of one meta-diorite sample and three meta-sedimentary host rocks are significantly younger than the obtained intrusion age. Therefore, they are not related to igneous processes. 87Rb/86Sr isochron ages differ from sample to sample (599?±?3, 572?±?4, 554?±?5, 540?±?5?Ma) yielding the oldest Neoproterozoic age (~600?Ma) for a paragneiss sample at a more northern location. The youngest Rb/Sr isochron age (~540?Ma) was obtained for a mica schist sample at a more southern location closer to the border of the Congo Craton. The 87Rb/86Sr whole rock-biotite ages are interpreted as cooling ages related to transpressional processes during exhumation. Therefore, several discrete metamorphic events related to the exhumation of the Yaounde Group were dated. It could be shown by Rb/Sr dating for the first time that these late tectonic processes occurred earlier at more distant northern locations of the Yaounde Group and lasted at least until early Cambrian (~540?Ma) more closely to the border of the Congo Craton.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of regional geochemical mapping using stream sediments from central and south-western Nigeria. A total of 1569 stream sediment samples were collected and 54 major and trace elements determined by ICP-MS and Au, Pd and Pt by fire assay. Multivariate statistical techniques (e.g., correlation analysis and principal factor analysis) were used to explore the data, following appropriate data transformation, to understand the data structure, investigate underlying processes controlling spatial geochemical variability and identify element associations. Major geochemical variations are controlled by source geology and provenance, as well as chemical weathering and winnowing processes, more subtle variations are a result of land use and contamination from anthropogenic activity.  相似文献

Raman spectra were acquired on a series of natural and synthetic sulfide minerals, commonly found in enstatite meteorites: oldhamite (CaS), niningerite or keilite ((Mg,Fe)S), alabandite (MnS), troilite (FeS), and daubreelite (Cr2FeS4). Natural samples come from three enstatite chondrites, three aubrites, and one anomalous ungrouped enstatite meteorite. Synthetic samples range from pure endmembers (CaS, FeS, MgS) to complex solid solutions (Fe, Mg, Ca)S. The main Raman peaks are localized at 225, 285, 360, and 470 cm?1 for the Mg‐rich sulfides; at 185, 205, and 285 cm?1 for the Ca‐rich sulfides; at 250, 370, and 580 cm?1 for the Mn‐rich sulfides; at 255, 290, and 365 cm?1 for the Cr‐rich sulfides; and at 290 and 335 cm?1 for troilite with, occasionally, an extra peak at 240 cm?1. A peak at 160 cm?1 is present in all Raman spectra and cannot be used to discriminate between the different sulfide compositions. According to group theory, none of the cubic monosulfides oldhamite, niningerite, or alabandite should present first‐order Raman spectra because of their ideal rocksalt structure. The occurrence of broad Raman peaks is tentatively explained by local breaking of symmetry rules. Measurements compare well with the infrared frequencies calculated from first‐principles calculations. Raman spectra arise from activation of certain vibrational modes due to clustering in the solid solutions or to coupling with electronic transitions in semiconductor sulfides.  相似文献

Observations of the H2 S(0) and S(1) quadrupole lines in the four giant planets by the short-wavelength spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory are analyzed. These lines probe pressure levels located between 10 and 1 mbar and allow us to determine the stratospheric hydrogen para fraction for the first time. In Jupiter and Saturn, the stratospheric para fraction is close to its tropopause value. In the stratosphere of these planets as well as in Neptune’s, the para fraction presents a significant departure from thermodynamic equilibrium. This situation results from a lagged conversion between the ortho and the para states as molecular hydrogen is transported upward under the influence of turbulent eddy diffusion. In contrast, the uranian stratosphere lies close to thermodynamic equilibrium. The magnitude of the departure from thermodynamic equilibrium appears to be anti-correlated with the amount of stratospheric aerosols. To validate this assumption, we estimate the hydrogen equilibration time with a one-dimensional diffusion model for different conversion processes in the gas phase or on aerosols. The comparison between our results and the tropospheric estimates from Conrath et al. (1998, Icarus,135, 501-517) shows that paramagnetic conversion on aerosols matches the estimated tropospheric and stratospheric relaxation times in the four giant planets. In contrast, paramagnetic conversion in the gas phase can only explain the relaxation times measured in Jupiter and Saturn atmospheres. This situation provides quantitative evidence for an equilibration mechanism dominated by conversion on aerosols.  相似文献

A continuous flow simulation model(CLASSIC) has been used to assess the potential impactof climate and land use changes on the flood regimesof large U.K. catchments. Climate change scenarios,based on the HadCM2 experiments from the HadleyCentre, are applied to the Severn and Thames rivers.The analysis shows that, for the 2050s, the climatechange scenarios result in an increase in both thefrequency and magnitude of flooding events in theserivers. The various ways of applying the rainfallscenario can have a significant effect on thesegeneral conclusions, although generally do not affecteither the direction or consistency of the changes.While best guess land use changes show little impacton flood response, a 50% increase in forest covercould counter-act the impact of climate change. Aswould be expected, a large change in the urban coverof the catchments does have a large effect on theflood regimes, increasing both the frequency andmagnitude of floods significantly beyond the changesdue to climate alone. Further research is requiredinto the potential impacts of seasonal changes in thedaily rainfall and potential evaporation regimes, landuse changes and the interaction between the two.  相似文献

An application of the theory of fuzzy sets to the mapping of gold mineralization potential in the Baguio gold mining district of the Philippines is described. Proximity to geological features is translated into fuzzy membership functions based upon qualitative and quantitative knowledge of spatial associations between known gold occurrences and geological features in the area. Fuzzy sets of favorable distances to geological features and favorable lithologic formations are combined using fuzzy logic as the inference engine. The data capture, map operations, and spatial data analyses are carried out using a geographic information system. The fuzzy predictive maps delineate at least 68% of the known gold occurrences that are used to generate the model. The fuzzy predictive maps delineate at least 76% of the unknown gold occurrences that are not used to generate the model. The results are highly comparable with the results of previous stream-sediment geochemical survey in the area. The results demonstrate the usefulness of a geologically constrained fuzzy set approach to map mineral potential and to redirect surficial exploration work in the search for yet undiscovered gold mineralization in the mining district. The method described is applicable to other mining districts elsewhere.  相似文献

The mylonitic rocks of the Central Cameroonian Shear Zone (Foumban–Bankim sector) are mainly ancient magmatic rocks emplaced in an internal zone of a Pan-African active margin. They display calc-alkaline affinities with granitoids of northern Cameroon, but differ by their higher K contents and shoshonitic nature. This spatial distinction in pre- to syn-orogenic magmatism permits to define a north to south potassium increase trend, compatible with the existence of a northern Pan-African subduction zone. The shearing evolution of this margin is marked by the superposition of two mylonitic foliations and the occurrence of unusual δ-type porphyroclasts. This suggests the interference of two shearing phases operating in opposing sense at a constant direction, under deep and shallow metamorphic conditions, respectively. To cite this article: E.
