Seismic soil-pile interaction is evaluated in this study based on back-calculated p-y loops constructed from sampled data
of pile bending moments. Fundamental properties of p-y loops are implemented to derive distributed springs and dashpots, thereby
quantifying soil-pile interaction in the realm of a Beam on Dynamic Winkler Foundation modeling. The procedure is validated
by means of well-documented centrifuge tests of a single pile supported structure founded on a two-layer soil profile that
comprises of soft clay overlying dense sand. Two shaking levels of a real earthquake motion applied at the base of the soil
profile were examined and the generated seismic p-y loops were compared to cyclic p-y curves commonly used in pile design
practice. The results demonstrate the strong influence of intensity of the input motion on seismic p-y loops while cyclic
p-y curves established for soft clays tend to overestimate soil stiffness under strong excitation. Typical sets of recorded
and computed structural response are presented, denoting the ability of the BDWF model related to p-y loops in reproducing

AbstractThe concept of “catchment-scale storm velocity” quantifies the rate of storm motion up and down the basin accounting for the interaction between the rainfall space–time variability and the structure of the drainage network. It provides an assessment of the impact of storm motion on flood shape. We evaluate the catchment-scale storm velocity for the 29 August 2003 extreme storm that occurred on the 700 km2-wide Fella River basin in the eastern Italian Alps. The storm was characterized by the high rate of motion of convective cells across the basin. Analysis is carried out for a set of basins that range in area from 8 to 623 km2 to: (a) determine velocity magnitudes for different sub-basins; (b) examine the relationship of velocity with basin scale and (c) assess the impact of storm motion on simulated flood response. Two spatially distributed hydrological models of varying degree of complexity in the representation of the runoff generation processes are used to evaluate the effects of the storm velocity on flood modelling and investigate model dependencies of the results. It is shown that catchment-scale storm velocity has a non-linear dependence on basin scale and generally exhibits rather moderate values, in spite of the strong kinematic characteristics of individual storm elements. Consistently with these observations and for both models, hydrological simulations show that storm motion has an almost negligible effect on the flood response modelling.Editor Z.W. The A-type W UMa system V566 Oph was observed photoelectrically in two wavebands (B andV) in the years 1988-1989 at the Kryonerion Astronomical Station of the National Observatory of Athens, Greece. The light curves of the system are analyzed using frequency-domain techniques and new geometric and photometric elements are derived. These elements are combined with the more recent spectroscopic data based on Reticon observations to yield the absolute parameters of the system. The evolutionary status of the system is considered and it is found that V566 Oph has started its evolution away from the Main Sequence. The period of the system continues to increase. 相似文献
