Thermal remanent magnetism provides a method of quantitatively determining the emplacement temperature of individual lithic clasts in a volcaniclastic rock. The technique is reviewed and applied to two types of Quaternary pyroclastic deposit on Santorini. Emplacement-temperature estimates for lithic clasts from two co-ignimbrite lithic breccias (Cape Riva and Middle Pumice eruptions) range from 250°C to 580°C, showing unambiguously that the breccias were emplaced hot. Good precision on temperature estimates (about ±20°C) were obtained from the Cape Riva breccias. Lithics in a Plinian airfall deposit from the Middle Pumice eruption give less precise results because the primary magnetisation has been partly overprinted by chemical (and/or viscous) remanence, and some clasts may have rotated during compaction of the deposit. Temperatures from proximal airfall are consistent with welding of the deposit within 1.5 km from vent. Temperature estimates for lithic clasts further from vent scatter, but a falloff of temperature away from vent can be recognised if an average emplacement temperature for the whole deposit is identified at each location. The study highlights some difficulties in interpreting quantitative temperature estimates for prehistoric pyroclastic deposits. 相似文献

A 16-month study of estuarine habitats in poly-, meso-, and oligohaline salinity regimes near Charleston Harbor assessed the distribution and abundance of megalopae and early crab stages of the blue crab,Callinectes sapidus. Blue crab were sampled with a plankton net and a cylindrical drop sampler. Blue crab were most abundant in plankton collections at night, accounting for 68% of the megalopae and over 88% of the juveniles collected in day and night tows combined. At night, densities of megalopae were greatest in surface samples, whereas densities in daylight collections were greater on the bottom. Juvenile densities were greatest on the bottom in both day and night collections, although catch rates at night were more variable than those of the megalopae. This suggests that megalopae, and possibly juvenile stages, experience a diel vertical migration. Results indicate that ingress to estuarine nursery areas occurs at the megalopal stage. Megalopal densities were highest at the polyhaline site, while juvenile blue crab were most abundant in the oligohaline area. Habitat utilization by juvenile blue crab was estimated using a cylindrical drop sampler and Venturi suction pump on three bottom types in the intertidal zone. Densities were greatest over the sandy-mud substrate, although catch rates were much lower than those reported for other geographical areas. These results suggest that juvenile blue crab do not occur in abundance on the marsh surface but remain on the creek bottom, possibly because creek physiography and large tidal amplitudes may restrict accessibility to the marsh surface. 相似文献

Enhanced production of stratospheric OH from methane oxidation at elevated reactive chlorine levels in northern midlatitudes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Examination of odd-hydrogen production and loss processes in the lower stratosphere reveals that the large abundances of midlatitude ClO recently measured requires a reassessment of the OH yield from methane oxidation due to a more rapid initiation of the methane oxidation sequence by atomic chlorine. Using a steady state calculation for OH and an iterative procedure for evaluating odd-hydrogen production from the methane oxidation sequence, we demonstrate that both OH and reactive chlorine are amplified below 25 km. The amplified values of OH and ClO are found to be consistent with recent measurements of ClO concentrations and of OH column abundances. 相似文献

The live and sedimentary components of the flat laminated microbial mat at Laguna Figueroa have been studied since the late sixties. This paper reports the observation and isolation of a variety of micro-organisms, both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The microbes were taken from the flat laminated mats submerged under at least one meter of water due to the spring rains of 1979 and 1980. Both in situ and enrichment culture observations were made using light and electron microscopic techniques. New strains of the following microbes are reported here: Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus licheniformis, Arthrobacter simplex and Paratetramitus jugosus. Several pseudomonads were isolated, some of which form distinctive subsurface colonial structures. Regular distinctive colony morphologies and desiccation resistant cysts were often observed, several types of which grow to characteristically large sizes and resemble objects found in the pre-Phanerozoic fossil record.Some colonies of manganese oxidizing bacilli and other bacteria are reminiscent of microfossils of the 2 Ga-old Gunflint Iron formation such as Metallogenium, Eosphaera tyleri, Eoastrion and Huronispora. Some manganese oxidizing bacteria form colonial structures that might be mistaken for individual organisms in the tens to hundreds of microns size range. The diversity of microbial structures, including those with preservation potential, must be kept in mind when interpreting the microfossil record. 相似文献

Cellulose and silica phytoliths were extracted from the leaves and stems of Calamovilfa longifolia, a C4 grass, grown under varying climatic conditions across the North American prairies. The oxygen-isotope compositions of both cellulose and silica record a complex signal of the isotopic composition of the soil water that feeds the plants and the relative humidity conditions that influence transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, and ultimately the 18O-enrichment of leaf water. As the initial stages of cellulose formation occur in the leaves, cellulose in both the leaves and stems forms primarily from leaf water and does not differ greatly in its oxygen-isotope composition between these locations. In contrast, the δ18O values of leaf phytoliths are significantly enriched in 18O relative to stem phytoliths, reflecting the varying isotopic composition of the water in these tissues. The oxygen-isotope compositions of leaf cellulose may be used as a proxy for the isotopic composition of water involved in leaf phytolith formation, while the δ18O values of stem phytoliths can be used to determine the δ18O values of stem water involved in partial exchange reactions during the transport of carbohydrates through the plant. A comparison of the isotopic compositions of phytoliths with cellulose allows for the deduction of soil and leaf water δ18O values as well as temperature and relative humidity conditions during plant growth. This approach has application in paleoclimate studies that traditionally have required estimations of one or more of these variables because direct measurements were unavailable. 相似文献

Cinnabar (α-HgS) and metacinnabar (β-HgS) dissolved at environmentally significant rates in oxygenated slurry experiments simulating a low-flow fluvial system. Based on SO42− production, cinnabar dissolution rates were 2.64 to 6.16 μmol (SO42−) m− 2 day− 1, and metacinnabar dissolution rates were 1.20 to 1.90 μmol (SO42−) m− 2 day− 1. Monodentate-bound thiosulfate (S2O32−) was identified as an oxidation product on the HgS surface by ATR-IR spectroscopy based on strong infrared absorption bands in the 1140–1145 cm− 1 and 1006–1014 cm− 1 regions. The presence of sulfide oxidation intermediates on the HgS surface indicates that SO42− concentration underestimates α-HgS and β-HgS dissolution in this setting. Mercury release rates during dissolution were more than two orders of magnitude less than SO42− production, but were significant: 0.47 mg (Hg) m− 2 y− 1 from cinnabar [6.45 nmol (Hg) m− 2 day− 1], and 0.17 mg (Hg) m− 2 y− 1 from metacinnabar [2.29 nmol (Hg) m− 2 day− 1]. The Hg mobilized during α-HgS and β-HgS dissolution is sufficient to form natural Au–Hg amalgam in downstream placer settings. The proportion of mercury that is not remobilized during α-HgS and β-HgS dissolution likely adsorbs to the dissolving mercuric sulfide. Adsorption of Hg2+ to cinnabar was detected in situ by anodic stripping voltammetry using a cinnabar-modified carbon paste electrode following accumulation of Hg2+ on the electrode at open circuit potential. 相似文献

This article explores the dimensions of rapid urbanization in the Phoenix Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) over the past thirty years with respect to land use change. We devote primary attention to developing an understanding of what land transformations took place, the extent to which they occurred, and where they occurred. Our findings indicate that 32 percent of the Phoenix SMSA changed between 1970 and 2000. More than half of the overall change was from agriculture to some form of urban land use, and although a large percentage of the region remains open desert the parcels of desert are increasingly fragmented. This has significant implications for urban ecology and biodiversity. The growth indicates that rather than a pattern that reflects the agglomeration effects of a polycentric metropolis, the central business district of the City of Phoenix dominates the region. This has implications with respect to employment patterns, traffic congestion, and urban air quality and climate. 相似文献
