Model calculations are used to determine the location of interplanetary dust particles that contribute most of the brightness of the zodiacal light as seen from Earth, in and out of the ecliptic plane and in the F-corona. It is found that as one observes in Increasing ecliptic latitude (β), the distance to the Earth decreases for dust contributing equal fractions to the line-of-sight brightness. This and other results will help in the analysis of: (1) structures in the observed brightness of the zodiacal light, (2) bands such as those observed by IRAS, (3) temporal variations in the brightness of the zodiacal light, (4) observations of the photometric axis, and (5) past and future observations of the F-corona.  相似文献

Thirteen high-dispersion spectrographs of the eclipsing binary star SZ Cam have been studied with a view of determining more accurate information on: (i) the spectral type and luminosity classifications, (ii) absolute parameters for the component stars, (iii) the stellar environment of SZ Cam. The main results in these categories are as follows: (i) O9.5 Vnk, (ii)m g=19±2M ,m s=6.5±1M ;r g=9.7±3.6R ,r s=4.8±1.7R ;T e~30000 K,T e~23000 K; (iii) there is a local concentration of absorbing material which may reach a density of 2M pc?3, and the distance of the star is found to be 600±150 pc. The determined overluminosity of the secondary star and the local concentration of absorbing material are two topics which provide the basis for a discussion section.  相似文献

Model differences in projections of extratropical regional climate change due to increasing greenhouse gases are investigated using two atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs): ECHAM4 (Max Planck Institute, version 4) and CCM3 (National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate Model version 3). Sea-surface temperature (SST) fields calculated from observations and coupled versions of the two models are used to force each AGCM in experiments based on time-slice methodology. Results from the forced AGCMs are then compared to coupled model results from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 2 (CMIP2) database. The time-slice methodology is verified by showing that the response of each model to doubled CO2 and SST forcing from the CMIP2 experiments is consistent with the results of the coupled GCMs. The differences in the responses of the models are attributed to (1) the different tropical SST warmings in the coupled simulations and (2) the different atmospheric model responses to the same tropical SST warmings. Both are found to have important contributions to differences in implied Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter extratropical regional 500 mb height and tropical precipitation climate changes. Forced teleconnection patterns from tropical SST differences are primarily responsible for sensitivity differences in the extratropical North Pacific, but have relatively little impact on the North Atlantic. There are also significant differences in the extratropical response of the models to the same tropical SST anomalies due to differences in numerical and physical parameterizations. Differences due to parameterizations dominate in the North Atlantic. Differences in the control climates of the two coupled models from the current climate, in particular for the coupled model containing CCM3, are also demonstrated to be important in leading to differences in extratropical regional sensitivity.  相似文献

We present the design of a novel way of handling astronomical catalogs in Astro-WISE in order to achieve the scalability required for the data produced by large scale surveys. A high level of automation and abstraction is achieved in order to facilitate interoperation with visualization software for interactive exploration. At the same time flexibility in processing is enhanced and data is shared implicitly between scientists. This is accomplished by using a data model that primarily stores how catalogs are derived; the contents of the catalogs are only created when necessary and stored only when beneficial for performance. Discovery of existing catalogs and creation of new catalogs is done through the same process by directly requesting the final set of sources (astronomical objects) and attributes (physical properties) that is required, for example from within visualization software. New catalogs are automatically created to provide attributes of sources for which no suitable existing catalogs can be found. These catalogs are defined to contain the new attributes on the largest set of sources the calculation of the attributes is applicable to, facilitating reuse for future data requests. Subsequently, only those parts of the catalogs that are required for the requested end product are actually processed, ensuring scalability. The presented mechanisms primarily determine which catalogs are created and what data has to be processed and stored: the actual processing and storage itself is left to existing functionality of the underlying information system.  相似文献

The common appearance of hygroscopic brine (“sweating”) on ordinary chondrites (OCs) from Oman during storage under room conditions initiated a study on the role of water‐soluble salts on the weathering of OCs. Analyses of leachates from OCs and soils, combined with petrography of alteration features and a 11‐month record of in situ meteorite and soil temperatures, are used to evaluate the role of salts in OC weathering. Main soluble ions in soils are Ca2+, SO42?, HCO3?, Na+, and Cl?, while OC leachates are dominated by Mg2+ (from meteoritic olivine), Ca2+ (from soil), Cl? (from soil), SO42? (from meteoritic troilite and soil), and iron (meteoritic). “Sweating meteorites” mainly contain Mg2+ and Cl?. The median Na/Cl mass ratio of leachates changes from 0.65 in soils to 0.07 in meteorites, indicating the precipitation of a Na‐rich phase or loss of an efflorescent Na‐salt. The total concentrations of water‐soluble ions in bulk OCs ranges from 600 to 9000 μg g?1 (median 2500 μg g?1) as compared to 187–14140 μg g?1 in soils (median 1148 μg g?1). Soil salts dissolved by rain water are soaked up by meteorites by capillary forces. Daily heating (up to 66.3 °C) and cooling of the meteorites cause a pumping effect, resulting in a strong concentration of soluble ions in meteorites over time. The concentrations of water‐soluble ions in meteorites, which are complex mixtures of ions from the soil and from oxidation and hydrolysis of meteoritic material, depend on the degree of weathering and are highest at W3. Input of soil contaminants generally dominates over the ions mobilized from meteorites. Silicate hydrolysis preferentially affects olivine and is enhanced by sulfide oxidation, producing local acidic conditions as evidenced by jarosite. Plagioclase weathering is negligible. After completion of troilite oxidation, the rate of chemical weathering slows down with continuing Ca‐sulfate contamination.  相似文献

The Jiddat al Harasis (JaH) 422 ureilite was found in the Sultanate of Oman; it is classified as a ureilitic impact melt breccia. The meteorite consists of rounded polycrystalline olivine clasts (35%), pores (8%), and microcrystalline matrix (57%). Clasts and matrix have oxygen isotopic values and chemical compositions (major and trace elements) characteristic of the ureilite group. The matrix contains olivine (Fo83–90), low‐Ca pyroxene (En84–92Wo0–5), augite (En71–56Wo20–31), graphite, diamond, Fe‐metal, sulfides, chromite, and felsic glass. Pores are partly filled by secondary Fe‐oxihydroxide and desert alteration products. Pores are surrounded by strongly reduced silicates. Clasts consist of fine‐grained aggregates of polygonal olivine. These clasts have an approximately 250 μm wide reaction rim, in which olivine composition evolves progressively from the core composition (Fo79–81) to the matrix composition (Fo84–87). Veins crossing the clasts comprise pyroxene, Fe‐oxihydroxide, C‐phases, and chromite. Clasts contain Ca‐, Al‐, and Cr‐rich glass along olivine grain boundaries (<1 μm wide). We suggest that a significant portion of JaH 422, including olivine and all the pyroxenes, was molten as a result of an impact. In comparison with other impact‐melted ureilites, JaH 422 shows the highest melt portion. Based on textural and compositional considerations, clasts and matrix probably originated from the same protolith, with the clasts representing relict olivine that survived, but was recrystallized in the impact melt. During the melt stage, the high availability of FeO and elevated temperatures controlled oxygen fugacity at values high enough to stabilize olivine with Fo~83–87 and chromite. Along pores, high Mg# compositions of silicates indicate that in a late stage or after melt crystallization FeO became less available and fO2 conditions were controlled by C?CO + CO2.  相似文献

Many endangered or threatened ecosystems depend on ground water for their survival. Nebraska's saline wetlands, home to a number of endangered species, are ecosystems whose development, sustenance, and survival depend on saline ground water discharge at the surface. This study demonstrates that the saline conditions present within the eastern Nebraska saline wetlands result from the upwelling of saline ground water from within the underlying Dakota Aquifer and deeper underlying formations of Pennsylvanian age. Over thousands to tens of thousands of years, saline ground water has migrated over regional scale flowpaths from recharge zones in the west to the present-day discharge zones along the saline streams of Rock, Little Salt, and Salt Creeks in Lancaster and Saunders counties. An endangered endemic species of tiger beetle living within the wetlands has evolved under a unique set of hydrologic conditions, is intolerant to recent anthropogenic changes in hydrology and salinity, and is therefore on the brink of extinction. As a result, the fragility of such systems demands an even greater understanding of the interrelationships among geology, hydrology, water chemistry, and biology than in less imperiled systems where adaptation is more likely. Results further indicate that when dealing with ground water discharge-dependent ecosystems, and particularly those dependent on dissolved constituents as well as the water, wetland management must be expanded outside of the immediate surface location of the visible ecosystem to include areas where recharge and lateral water movement might play a vital role in wetland hydrologic and chemical mixing dynamics.  相似文献
