AbstractGamepads and joysticks have the potential to improve spatial navigation in virtual globes, block diagrams and 2D maps. Digital school atlases, in particular, can become more engaging if support for gamepads and joysticks is added, as children and adolescents are very proficient at using these devices. The fusion of gaming devices and interactive school atlases offers interesting new use cases: teachers can control a digital wall map with a remote-control gamepad while lecturing from the front of the classroom, or students can explore maps on their personal computers using an enticing way to interact. This paper presents these use cases, the characteristics of the most common gaming devices, and discusses spatial navigation with gamepads and joysticks for globes, block diagrams and 2D maps. The ideas presented originated from the ongoing development of a new, interactive version of the Swiss World Atlas for schools. 相似文献
Location-Based Services (LBS), an emerging new business based on smartphone and mobile networks, are becoming more and more popular. Most of these LBSs, however, only offer non-seamless indoor/outdoor applications and simple applications without giving stakeholders the chance to play an active role. Our specific aim is to solve these issues. This paper presents concepts to solve these issues by expanding the Open Location Services Interface Standard (OpenLS) to allow seamless indoor/outdoor positioning and to extend the content of the services to include information recommended by stakeholders. 相似文献
We investigate winter Arctic Amplification (AA) on synoptic timescales and at regional scales using a daily version of the Arctic Amplification Index (AAI) and examine causes on a synoptic scale. The persistence, frequency and intensity of high AAI events show significant increases over the Arctic. Similarly, low AAI events are decreasing in frequency, persistence and intensity. In both cases, there are regional variations in these trends, in terms of significance and timing. Significant trends in increasing persistence, frequency and intensity of high AAI events in winter are concentrated in the period 2000–2009, with few significant trends before and after this. There are some decreases in sea-ice concentration in response to synoptic-scale AA events and these AA events can contribute to the decadal trends in AA found in other studies. A sectoral analysis of the Arctic indicates that in the Beaufort–Chukchi and East Siberian–Laptev Seas, synoptic scale high AAI events can be driven by tropical teleconnections while in other Arctic sectors, it is the intrusion of moisture-transporting synoptic cyclones into the Arctic that is most important in synoptic-scale AA. The presence of Rossby wave breaking during high AAI events is indicative of forcing from lower latitudes, modulated by variations in the jet stream. An important conclusion is that the increased persistence, frequency and intensity of synoptic-scale high AAI events make significant contributions to the interannual trend in AA.
The Eagle Ni–Cu–(PGE) deposit is hosted in mafic–ultramafic intrusive rocks associated with the Marquette–Baraga dike swarm in northern Michigan. Sulfide mineralization formed in association with picritic magmatism in a dynamic magma conduit during the early stages in the development of the ~1.1?Ga Midcontinent Rift System. Four main types of sulfide mineralization have been recognized within the Eagle deposit: (1) disseminated sulfides in olivine-rich rocks; (2) rocks with semi-massive sulfides located both above and below the massive sulfide zone; (3) massive sulfides; and (4) sulfide veins in sedimentary country rocks. The disseminated, massive and lower semi-massive sulfide zones are typically composed of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, whereas the upper semi-massive sulfide ore zone also contains pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite, but has higher cubanite content. Three distinct types of sulfide mineralization are present in the massive sulfide zone: IPGE-rich, PPGE-rich, and PGE-unfractioned. The lower and upper semi-massive sulfide zones have different PGE compositions. Samples from the lower semi-massive sulfide zone are characterized by unfractionated PGE patterns, whereas those from the upper semi-massive sulfide zone show moderate depletion in IPGE and moderate enrichment in PPGE. The mantle-normalized PGE patterns of unfractionated massive and lower semi-massive sulfides are subparallel to those of the disseminated sulfides. The results of numerical modeling using PGE concentrations recalculated to 100% sulfide (i.e., PGE tenors) and partition coefficients of PGE between sulfide liquid and magma indicate that the disseminated and unfractionated massive sulfide mineralization formed by the accumulation of primary sulfide liquids with similar R factors between 200 and 300. In contrast, the modeled R factor for the lower semi-massive sulfide zone is <100. The fractionated sulfide zones such as those of the IPGE-rich and PPGE-rich massive sulfides and the upper semi-massive sulfide zone can be explained by fractional crystallization of monosulfide solid solution from sulfide liquids. The results of numerical modeling indicate that the sulfide minerals in the upper semi-massive sulfide zone are the products of crystallization of fractionated sulfide liquids derived from a primary sulfide liquid with an R factor similar to that for the disseminated sulfide mineralization. Interestingly, the modeled parental sulfide liquid for the IPGE-rich and PPGE-rich massive sulfide zones has a higher R factor (~400) than that for the unfractionated massive sulfide mineralization. Except one sample which has unusually high IPGE and PPGE contents, all other samples from the Cu-rich sulfide veins in the footwall of the intrusion are highly depleted in IPGE and enriched in PPGE. These signatures are generally consistent with highly fractionated sulfide liquids expelled from crystallizing sulfide liquid. Collectively, our data suggest that at least four primary sulfide liquids with different R factors (<100, 200–300, ~400) were involved in the formation of the Eagle magmatic sulfide deposit. We envision that the immiscible sulfide liquids were transported from depth by multiple pulses of magma passing through the Eagle conduit system. The sulfide liquids were deposited in the widened part of the conduit system due to the decreasing velocity of magma flow. The presence of abundant olivine in some of the sulfide ore zones indicates that the ascending magma also carried olivine crystals. Sulfide saturation was attained in the parental magma due in large part to the assimilation of country rock sulfur at depth. 相似文献
In a probabilistic analysis of rock slope stability, the Monte Carlo simulation technique has been widely used to evaluate
the probability of slope failure. While the Monte Carlo simulation technique has many advantages, the technique requires complete
information of the random variables in stability analysis; however, in practice, it is difficult to obtain complete information
from a field investigation. The information on random variables is usually limited due to the restraints of sampling numbers.
This is why approximation methods have been proposed for reliability analyses. Approximation methods, such as the first-order
second-moment method and the point estimate method, require only the mean and standard deviation of the random variable; therefore,
it is easy to utilize when the information is limited. Usually, a single closed form of the formula for the evaluation of
the factor of safety is needed for an approximation method. However, the commonly used stability analysis method of wedge
failure is complicated and cumbersome and does not provide a simple equation for the evaluation of the factor of safety. Consequently,
the approximation method is not appropriate for wedge failure. In order to overcome this limitation, a simple equation, which
is obtained from the maximum likelihood estimation method for wedge failure, is utilized to calculate the probability of failure.
A simple equation for the direct estimation of the safety factors for wedge failure has been empirically derived from failed
and stable cases of slope, using the maximum likelihood estimation method. The developed technique has been applied to a practical
example, and the results from the developed technique were compared to the results from the Monte Carlo simulation technique. 相似文献
Ensemble techniques were developed, applied and validated for the analysis of landslide susceptibility in Jinbu area, Korea using the geographic information system (GIS). Landslide-occurrence areas were detected in the study by interpreting aerial photographs and field survey data. Landslide locations were randomly selected in a 70/30 ratio for training and validation of the models, respectively. Topography, geology, soil and forest databases were also constructed. Maps relevant to landslide occurrence were assembled in a spatial database. Using the constructed spatial database, 17 landslide-related factors were extracted. The relationships between the detected landslide locations and the factors were identified and quantified by frequency ratio, weight of evidence, logistic regression and artificial neural network models and their ensemble models. The relationships were used as factor ratings in the overlay analysis to create landslide susceptibility indexes and maps. Then, the four landslide susceptibility maps were used as new input factors and integrated using the frequency ratio, weight of evidence, logistic regression and artificial neural network models as ensemble methods to make better susceptibility maps. All of the susceptibility maps were validated by comparison with known landslide locations that were not used directly in the analysis. As the result, the ensemble-based landslide susceptibility map that used the new landslide-related input factor maps showed better accuracy (87.11% in frequency ratio, 83.14% in weight of evidence, 87.79% in logistic regression and 84.54% in artificial neural network) than the individual landslide susceptibility maps (84.94% in frequency ratio, 82.82% in weight of evidence, 87.72% in logistic regression and 81.44% in artificial neural network). All accuracy assessments showed overall satisfactory agreement of more than 80%. The ensemble model was found to be more effective in terms of prediction accuracy than the individual model. 相似文献
Hydrogeochemical analyses including the basic statistics of chemical components, Piper??s trilinear diagram, and Mazor??s compositional bivariate diagram revealed that the main source and origin of groundwater contamination was seawater intrusion in the study area. However, the other sources and origins of groundwater contamination could be found by the combined analyses of chemometrics and kriging. Cluster analysis was helpful for the classification on the basis of the contamination characteristics of groundwater quality; however, it was not sufficient for the apportionment of groundwater contamination sources. Factor analysis (FA) determined three factors with 81.07% in total variance: Factor 1 for seawater contamination, Factor 2 for nitrate contamination, and Factor 3 for iron contamination. Factor analysis determined the sources of groundwater contamination; however, it could not discover the origins of contaminants except Factor 1. In backward stepwise mode, discriminant analysis decreased the number of parameters from 18 to 6 in discriminating the contaminant type with 96.2% correctness. TDS, Ca, NO3, Mn, Fe, and Br were the most significant parameters for the discrimination of contaminants. Kriging analysis was very useful for the understanding of correlation and similarity between contaminants and factors of FA, and for the investigation of contaminant origins. It also showed that the similarity between factor scores and contaminant concentrations was proportional to the magnitudes of factor loadings for contaminants. This study represented that the combined analyses of chemometrics and kriging were very indispensable to the identification of groundwater contamination sources and origins, as well as for the spatial classification and assessment of groundwater quality. 相似文献
The urban environment has been dramatically changed by artificial constructions. How the modified urban geometry affects the urban climate and therefore human thermal comfort has become a primary concern for urban planners. The present study takes a simulation approach to analyze the influence of urban geometry on the urban climate and maps this climatic understanding from a quantitative perspective. A geographical building database is used to characterize two widely discussed aspects: urban heat island effect (UHI) and wind dynamics. The parameters of the sky view factor (SVF) and the frontal area density (FAD) are simulated using ArcGIS-embedded computer programs to link urban geometry with the UHI and wind dynamic conditions. The simulated results are synergized and classified to evaluate different urban climatic conditions based on thermal comfort consideration. A climatic map is then generated implementing the classification. The climatic map shows reasonable agreement with thermal comfort understanding, as indicated by the biometeorological index of the physiological equivalent temperature (PET) obtained in an earlier study. The proposed climate mapping approach can provide both quantitative and visual evaluation of the urban environment for urban planners with climatic concerns. The map could be used as a decision support tool in planning and policy-making processes. An urban area in Hong Kong is used as a case study. 相似文献
