Studies of hydrothermal circulation within partly buried basement on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (JFR) have shown that ridge-flank geochemical fluxes are potentially important for the global budgets of some elements. There are major uncertainties in these flux calculations, however, because the composition of these basement fluids is strongly dependent on temperature and because they may be modified by interaction with the overlying terrigenous sediments, either by diffusive exchange with basement or during upwelling to the seafloor. To better understand the nature and temperature control of basalt-fluid and sediment-fluid reactions at the JFR flank, we have conducted laboratory experiments between 51 and 350°C and at 400 bars pressure. K, Rb, and Si are leached from basalt between 150 and 351°C, and Sr and U are taken up. The direction of exchange of Li and Ca with basalt varies with temperature. Li and Sr are removed from fluid at 150°C, but isotope studies show that there is simultaneous release of both elements from basalt, indicating that uptake is controlled by the formation of secondary minerals. Moreover, our experiments confirm that Sr isotope exchange with oceanic crust occurs at moderate temperature and is not confined to high-temperature axial hydrothermal systems. Our data and field data from the JDR flank indicate that uptake of U into basalt at moderate temperature could remove between 9.9 and 15 × 106 mol U yr−1 from the oceans. This is higher than a recent estimate based on measurements of U in altered ocean crust (5.7 ± 3.3 × 106 mol yr−1), which concords with arguments that the Δelement/heat ratios of JDR flank fluids are too large to be representative of average global flank fluids. K, Ca, Sr, Ba, Li, Si, and B are leached from terrigenous sediments between 51 and 350°C, and U is taken up. Cs and Rb are removed from the fluid below 100°C and leached from the sediment at higher temperature. Sr isotope data show that Sr is preferentially mobilised from volcanic components within terrigenous sediments, which may lead to an overestimation of the ridge-flank Sr isotope flux at the JDR if there is exchange of sediment pore fluids with basement.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal and tidal-monthly, suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics in the Columbia River estuary from May to December 1997 using acoustic backscatter (ABS) and velocity data from four long-term Acoustic Doppler Profiler (ADP) moorings in or near the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM). ABS profiles were calibrated and converted to total SPM profiles using pumped SPM samples and optical backscatter (OBS) data obtained during three seasonal cruises. Four characteristic settling velocity (W s) classes were defined from Owen Tube samples collected during the cruises. An inverse analysis, in the form of a non-negative least squares minimization, was used to determine the contribution of the four,W s-classes to each, total SPM profile. The outputs from the inverse analyses were 6–8 mo time-series ofW s-specific SPM concentration and transport profiles at each mooring. The profiles extended from the free surface to 1.8–2.7 m from the bed, with 0.25–0.50 m resolution. These time series, along with Owen Tube results and disaggregated size data, were used to investigate SPM dynamics. Three non-dimensional parameters were defined to investigate how river flow and tidal forcing affect particle trapping: Rouse numberP (balance between vertical mixing and settling) trapping efficiencyE (ratio of maximum SPM concentration in the estuary to fluvial source concentration), and advection numberA (ratio of height of maximum SPM concentration to friction velocity). The most effective particle trapping (maximum values ofE) occurs on low-flow neap tides. The location of the ETM and the maximal trapping migrated seasonally in a manner consistent with the increase in salinity intrusion length after the spring freshet. Maximum advection (high values ofA) occurred during highly stratified neap tides.  相似文献

The Quaternary Aquifer of the North China Plain is one of the worlds largest aquifer systems and supports an enormous exploitation of groundwater, which has reaped large socio-economic benefits in terms of grain production, farming employment and rural poverty alleviation, together with urban and industrial water-supply provision. Both population and economic activity have grown markedly in the past 25 years. Much of this has been heavily dependent upon groundwater resource development, which has encountered increasing difficulties in recent years primarily as a result of aquifer depletion and related phenomena. This paper focuses upon the hydrogeologic and socio-economic diagnosis of these groundwater resource issues, and identifies strategies to improve groundwater resource sustainability.
Resumen El acuífero cuaternario de la Llanura Septentrional de China es uno de los mayores sistemas acuíferos del mundo y soporta una enorme explotación de su agua subterránea, las cuales han originado grandes beneficios socioeconómicos en términos de producción de grano, empleo en agricultura y mitigación de la pobreza rural, además de proveer agua para abastecimiento urbano e industria. Tanto la población como la actividad económica han crecido mucho en los últimos 25 años con una gran dependencia de las aguas subterráneas, que ha encontrado dificultades recientes por la explotación intensiva del acuífero y fenómenos relacionados. Este artículo se centra en la diagnosis hidrogeológica y socioeconómica de los problemas relacionados con las aguas subterráneas e identifica estrategias para mejorar la sustentabilidad de este recurco.

Résumé Laquifère Quaternaire de la Plaine du Nord de la Chine est lun des plus grands systèmes aquifères du monde; il permet une exploitation énorme deau souterraine, qui a permis des très importants bénéfices socio-économiques en terme de production de céréales, demplois ruraux et de réduction de la pauvreté rurale, en même temps que lapprovisionnement en eau potable et pour lindustrie. La population comme lactivité économique ont remarquablement augmenté au cours de ces 25 dernières années. Elles ont été sous la forte dépendance du développement de la ressource en eau souterraine, qui a rencontré des difficultés croissantes ces dernières années, du fait du rabattement de laquifère et des phénomènes associés. Cet article est consacré aux diagnostiques hydrogéologique et socio-économique des retombées de cette ressource en eau souterraine; il identifie les stratégies pour améliorer la pérennité des ressources en eau souterraine.

High resolution sampling of sediment cores covering approximately the last 4000 yr from Lochan Uaine, a small corrie loch in the Scottish Cairngorm Mountains, show quasi‐periodic cycles in organic matter (measured as percentage loss on ignition). Analysis of these cycles show correspondences between loss on ignition, δ13C values and chironomid head capsule abundance. We interpret the changes as reflecting changes in lake productivity and hypothesise that they are driven by climate variability. However, it is not yet clear whether the periods of relatively high organic matter production and preservation are associated with colder or with warmer conditions. Nevertheless the results indicate the value of using sediments from remote, undisturbed mountain lakes as recorders of Holocene climate variability. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Analysis methods for block toppling are most commonly undertaken in two dimensions. This paper investigates the influence of discontinuity orientations on three-dimensional block toppling mechanisms using a three-dimensional distinct element code. The three-dimensional models allow one to kinematically appraise if toppling conditions derived for two-dimensional geometries can be extended into three dimensions. Two conceptual model geometries were considered in order to represent a road cut or open-pit bench. The first geometry examined a slope with fixed vertical lateral boundaries, while the second geometry assumed an unrestrained lateral slope as a model boundary condition. This “along-strike slope profile” of the models was found to play an important role in the failure mechanism and displacement direction. The dip direction and dip angle of the toppling, basal and lateral release discontinuities were varied one at the time using angular ranges of up to 30° from an assumed mutual orthogonal relationship. This made it possible for the influence and importance of each discontinuity set to be independently evaluated. The results are presented in a stereographic format with preliminary zones outlining discontinuity aspect combinations that potentially result in block toppling failures.  相似文献
