The development and evolution of bedding parallel veins (BPV) are investigated in the Saint-Dominique carbonate slice (southern Québec Appalachian structural front), in order to emphasize the regional significance of BPV in a fold and thrust belt and their importance in establishing its structural and diagenetic evolution. Structural and microstructural analyses reveal that most BPV display a laminated structure locally crosscut by a massive one. Both structures show mutual crosscutting relationships with bedding parallel or bedding perpendicular stylolites and with bedding perpendicular veinlets, indicating that BPV cementation and deformation are continuous processes. Opening both sub-parallel and sub-perpendicular to the BPV walls are documented. Early BPV are planes of weakness that focus later reactivation, and evidence of successive and sometimes opposite senses of opening are locally preserved within a single BPV. The bedding parallel orientation of these veins proved particularly helpful in establishing the structural evolution of an area mostly characterized by front parallel structures with little crosscutting relationships otherwise. Petrographic and geochemical (δ18O VPDB and δ13C) analyses of structural cements suggest a common, locally derived source for the fluids that percolated through BPV, non-bedding parallel veins and faults. The isotopic ratios also reveal a significant enrichment in 18O and 13C through time. This evolution is tentatively correlated with tectonic, syn-convergence exhumation of the Saint-Dominique slice during its imbrication along the Appalachian structural front, after its burial under Taconian thrust sheets.  相似文献

Bryozoan statoblasts in the recent sediments of Douglas Lake, Michigan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Statoblast valves produced by the freshwater bryozoan Plumatella nitens were recovered in three sediment cores from Douglas Lake, Michigan. Douglas Lake is a multi-depression lake of glacial origin. The region was heavily logged from 1880 to 1920. Sediment cores were taken from three of the seven depressions, and dated using 210Pb isotopes and pollen. Sedimentation rates were very low in the Grapevine Point core as compared to the other two cores. Concentrations of statoblasts ranged from three to 140 ml-1 of wet sediment. Profiles of statoblast concentrations and accumulation rates indicate a sharp decline in Plumatella populations corresponding to the time the Douglas Lake watershed was being clear-cut. It appears that logging and the resulting increase in erosion had adverse effects on bryozoan populations, and possibly on the entire littoral zone of the lake. High sediment loads to the lake could have caused mortality in Plumatella by interfering with the feeding of these animals, or by decreasing numbers of macrophytes which are frequently used as substrate. Populations of Plumatella have not recovered to pre-disturbance levels.  相似文献

As part of a larger multi-institutional seismic monitoring experiment during June–August 1984 in the eastern Wasatch Plateau, Utah, data from a subarray of 20 portable seismographs were used to investigate seismicity in the East Mountain area, an area of active underground coal mining and intense microseismicity. Eight stations of the subarray were concentrated on top of East Mountain, about 600 m above mine level, at an average spacing of 2 to 3 km. The primary objective was the accurate resolution of hypocenters and focal mechanisms for seismic events originating at submine levels. Data from high-resolution seismic reflection profiles and drill-hole sonic logs yielded a detailed velocity model. This model features a strong velocity gradient in the uppermost 1 km, which has a significant effect on takeoff angles for first-arrivingP-waves from shallow seismic events. Two hundred epicenters located with a precision of ±500 m cluster within an area about 5 km in diameter and show an evident spatial association with four sites of longwall mining during the study period. A special set of foci rigorously tested for focal-depth reliability indicates submine seismicity predominating within 500 m of mine level and extending at least to 1 km, and perhaps to 2 km, below mine level. Continuous monitoring for a 61-day period (June 15–August 15) bracketed a 16-day mining shutdown (July 7–22) during which significant seismicity, comparable to that observed before the shutdown, was observed. Ten focal mechanisms for seismic events originating at or down to 2 km below mine level nearly all imply reverse faulting, consistent with previous results and the inferred tectonic stress field. Enigmatic events recorded with all dilatational first motions can be fit with double-couple normal-faulting solutions if they in fact occurabove mine level, perhaps reflecting overburden subsidence. If these events are constrained to occur at mine level, their first-motion distributions are incompatible with a double-couple source mechanism.  相似文献

Water temperature data from the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie from 1908 to the present were acquired. This long-term data set contains (with a few gaps) daily water temperatures at a constant location for the 82-yr period. We hypothesized that water temperatures, because of the dampened variability as compared to air temperatures, would provide a useful record of long-term temperature change. The data were analyzed for statistically significant trends, both annually and monthly for long-term and 10-yr blocks; both warming and cooling trends within all categories were found. The longest significant trend was a 0.12°C per decade increase from about 1920 to 1990. This increase, which was statistically significant for both simple regression and time-series analysis, is within the limits of the suggested rates of change on the global scale. On the other hand, there was no significant trend from the beginning of the record (1908) to the present, due to an apparent dramatic cooling from 1908 to about 1920.  相似文献

Predicting tropical cyclone (TCs) tracks is a primary concern in TC forecasting. Some TCs appear to move in a direction favorable for their development, beyond the influence of the steering flow. Thus, we hypothesize that TCs move toward regions with high water-vapor content in the lower atmosphere. In this study, four numerical experiments, including a control experiment and three sensitivity experiments, were performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model, to analyze the relationship between water vapor distribution and the track of Severe Typhoon Hato (2017). Observations validated the features reproduced in the control experiment. The sensitivity experiments were conducted to explore variations in the TC track under different water vapor environments. Results indicate that the horizontal distribution of water-vapor content exerted a greater impact on the TC track than the steering flow when both factors were significant. Further analysis revealed that the TC’s movement vector was between the direction of the steering flow and the direction toward the peak of vorticity increasing area. The peaks of vorticity increasing area were close to the peaks of water vapor increasing area, which also proved the effect of water vapor distribution on the TC track. These results are expected to improve TC track analysis and forecasting.

A geophysical survey was conducted over a hydrocarbon prospect in the North Celtic Sea Basin using a small array of ocean‐bottom seismographs (OBSs). The purpose of this study was to determine the ratio of compressional (P)‐ to shear (S)‐wave velocity of consolidated sedimentary rocks in order to constrain possible subsurface variations in pore‐fluid content. The ratio of VP and VS is known to be particularly sensitive to lithology, porosity and pore‐fluid content, making it a useful parameter for evaluating hydrocarbon prospects. OBSs offer a relatively cheap and time‐effective means of acquiring multi‐component data compared with ocean‐bottom cables. In this contribution, we demonstrate the ability of an OBS survey comprising three pairs of two OBSs spaced at 1.6 km to recover lateral variations in the VP/VS ratio. A key requirement of this type of study is that S waves will be generated by mode conversions in the subsurface, since they cannot be generated in nor travel through fluids. In this survey, the contrast in physical properties of the hard seabed of the North Celtic Sea Basin provided a means of generating converted S waves. Two‐dimensional ray‐tracing and forward modelling was used to create both VP and VS models along a profile crossing the Blackrock prospect in the North Celtic Sea Basin. These models comprise four layers and extend to a maximum depth of 1.1 km. The observed northward decrease in the VP/VS ratio at depths of 500–1000 m below the seafloor in the study area is interpreted to represent lateral variation in the amount of gas present in the pore space of Upper Cretaceous chalks and shales overlying the prospective reservoir.  相似文献

The Nauset Marsh estuary is the most extensive (9.45 km2) and least disturbed salt marsh/estuarine system within the Cape Cod National Seashore, even though much of the 19 km2 watershed area of the estuary is developed for residential or commercial purposes. Because all of the Nauset watershed is serviced by on-site individual sewage disposal systems, there is concern over the potential impact of groundwater-derived nutrients passing from these systems to the shallow receiving waters of the estuary. The purpose of this study was to determine whether denitrification (the bacterial conversion of nitrate to gaseous nitrogen) in estuarine sediments could effectively remove the nitrate from contaminated groundwater before it passed from the watershed to the estuary. Rates of denitrification were measured both in situ and in sediment cores, in areas of active groundwater discharge, in relatively pristine locations, and in areas situated down-gradient of moderate to heavily developed regions of the watershed. Denitrification rates for 47 sediment cores taken over an annual cycle at 5 stations ranged from non-detectable to 47 μmol N2 m−2 h. Mean denitrification rates were positively correlated with sediment organic content, and varied seasonally due to changes in sediment organic content and to the effect of water temperatures on sediment oxygen penetration depths. There was no correlation between observed denitrification rates and corresponding nitrate concentrations in groundwater. A comparison of in situ denitrification rates (supported by groundwater nitrate) with denitrification rates observed in sediment cores (supported by remineralized nitrate) showed that groundwater-driven denitrification rates were small, and not in excess of denitrification rates supported by remineralized nitrate. Most of the denitrification in Nauset sediments was apparently fueled by remineralized nitrate through coupled nitrification/denitrification. Denitrification did not contribute significantly to the direct loss of nitrate from incoming groundwater at Nauset Marsh estuary. Groundwater flow was rapid, and much of it occurred in freshwater springs and seeps through very coarse, sandy, well-oxygenated sediments of limited organic content. There was little opportunity for denitrification to occur during groundwater passage through these sediments. These results have important management implications because they suggest that the majority of nitrogen from contaminated groundwater crosses the sediment/water interface and arrives at Nauset Estuary, where it is available to primary producers. Preliminary budget calculations suggest that while denitrification was not an effective mechanism for the direct removal of nitrate in contaminated groundwater flowing to Nauset Marsh estuary, it may contribute to significant nitrogen losses from the estuary itself.  相似文献

The digitized lava-flow margins of well-defined extended eruptions occurring at Vesuvio in 1760, 1794, 1861, 1906, 1929 and 1944 are found to follow fractal behaviours inside a scaling region enclosed between 50 and 400 m. Although the invariance region is well respected, the fractal dimension D varies from one lava flow to another: the more irregular the lava-flow margin, the larger the value of D. The ascertained dependence of D on the duration of premonitory activity, preceding the emission of lavas, might provide some insight into the inner volcanic processes before the eruption and into the dynamical processes operating during flow emplacement.  相似文献
