The thermal expansion of supercooled liquids in the haplobasaltic (anorthite-diopside) system have been determined via methods of container-based dilatometry. The expansivity data obtained in this study agree well with estimates provided by previous dilatometric determinations in the system that have relied on alternative experimental strategies. The data have been combined with high-temperature, superliquidus determinations of melt density to obtain expressions for the volume-temperature (V-T) relationships of liquids in the anorthite-diopside system. The V-T data clearly indicate a nonlinear temperature dependence of volume for all melts investigated. The variation is most striking for diopside, where the coefficient of volume thermal expansion decreases ∼56% from temperatures near the glass transition to superliquidus temperatures. With increasing anorthite content, the degree of variation appears to decrease. An42Di58 exhibits a decrease of 39% of its coefficient of thermal expansion and An98Di02 of 33%, respectively. The expansivities obtained in this study cannot be reproduced by means of published models that are based on linear V-T relationships. They require instead a reanalysis of existing pressure-V-T equations of state models for silicate melts. 相似文献

On 19 April 2005, an oil spill occurred in southeastern Louisiana’s Barataria Bay estuary. We used a drop sampler to characterize
the marsh-edge nekton community. Thirty-six locations were sampled in pre- and post-spill time frames from March through May
2005. Before–after control–impact (BACI) analyses of the total number of individuals (fishes + decapod crustaceans), total
fishes, and sensitive species found significant interactions between the temporal (before/after) and spatial (control/impact)
treatments and indicated an effect of the oil spill. Nonparametric analyses detected varied faunal assemblages across temporal
treatments, but were similar in species composition among spatial treatments. While the BACI analyses showed event effects,
differences were not strongly detected in nonparametric analyses of community structure. Fish are mobile and left the spill
area after the disturbance, whereas the less mobile but more numerous benthic decapod crustaceans remained. The overall community
structure appears to be robust and quickly recovered from the localized spill event. 相似文献

Correlations in space and time play a fundamental role in earthquake processes. One direct manifestation of the effects of correlations is the occurrence of aftershocks due to the stress transfer in the vicinity of a main shock. Less obvious and more speculative changes in correlations may occur in the background seismicity before large earthquakes. Using statistical physics it is possible to introduce a measure of spatial correlations through a correlation length. This quantity characterizes how local fluctuations can influence the occurrence of earthquakes over distances comparable with the correlation length. In this work, the physical basis of spatial correlations of earthquakes is discussed in the context of critical phenomena and the percolation problem. The method of two-point correlation function is applied to the seismicity of California. Well defined variations in time of the correlation length are found for aftershock sequences and background seismicity. The scaling properties of our obtained distributions are analyzed with respect to changes in several scaling parameters such as lower magnitude cutoff of earthquakes, the maximum time interval between earthquakes, and the spatial size of the area considered. This scaling behavior can be described in a unified manner by utilizing the multifractal fit. Utilizing the percolation approach the time evolution of clusters of earthquakes is studied with the correlation length defined in terms of the radius of gyration of clusters. In the enormous expansion of world trade in the quarter century after 1950, the share generated by countries of the Western Pacific remained remarkably constant. This relationship primarily reflected the rise of Japan as a major force in the international economy. Whereas Japan's own trade grew more widely oriented and the Western Pacific margins relatively less important as trading partners than before WW II, to the states of the Western Pacific Japan's status both as a supplier of imports and as an export market greatly enlarged —only rarely is Japan not the leading trading partner. The Japanese strategy of export-led growth has been replicated by South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. All of these countries, as well as Japan itself, depend overwhelmingly on imports for their raw materials and energy supplies. Elsewhere trade patterns have been greatly modified by a rising spirit of nationalism that has emphasized development of manufacturing industries in Australia and New Zealand no less than in the states of SE Asia. 相似文献

Eocene shales metamorphosed by a naturally ignited coal seam in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming record a continuum of mineralogic and textural changes from relatively unaltered shale to melt developed during pyrometamorphism. Samples collected along a section 2 m in length, corresponding to a temperature range of approximately 1300°C, were examined optically and by XRD, SEM, and STEM. The low temperature samples are comprised primarily of silt-sized quartz, K-feldspar, and minor amounts of other detrital minerals in a continuous matrix of illite/smectite (I/S). Delamination of phyllosilicates due to dehydroxylation occurs early in the sequence with curling of individual layers from rim to core. Within one-half meter of melted areas, phyllosilicates have undergone an essentially isochemical reconstitution with nucleation and growth of mullite crystals with maximum diameters of 50 nm, randomly distributed within a non-crystalline phase that replaces I/S. Large detrital grains remain for the most part unaffected except for the inversion of quartz to tridymite/cristobalite. Within 1 mm of the solid/melt interface, the mullitebearing clay mineral matrix is essentially homogeneous in composition with obscure grain boundaries, caused by apparent homogenization of poorly crystalline material. This material is similar in composition to parent clays and acts as a matrix to angular, remnant tridymite/cristobalite grains. Rounded, smaller silica grains have reaction rims with the non-crystalline matrix; K-feldspar is no longer present (apparently reacted with the matrix) and the matrix contains abundant pore space due to shrinkage upon dehydroxylation. As isolated pods of paralava (glass) or fractures are approached, Fe–Ti–Al oxides become abundant. Vesicular glass is separated from clinker by a well-defined interface and contains numerous phenocrysts. Previous attention has been called to the morphology of the glaciated Appalachian Plateau, including periglacial phenomena (Coates, 1970; Conners, 1969). This paper deals with an unusually well-developed hierarchy of small landforms in the Great Bend area of the Susquehanna River. Essential properties of these features include: (1) concentration in N-S valleys, (2) till composition, (3) concavo-convex form, sometimes ending in a hill on the valley floor, (4) alternation with steep, truncated bedrock spurs, (5) a col in the interfluve at their head. These characteristics could be explained by the following sequence of events. A prior fluvial landscape was eroded with tributary streams forming lateral valleys that head in cols along the divides. The main stream flowed south between interlocking spurs. Ice then widened the valley, leaving truncated spurs and a straightened stream. Deposition of locally derived till filled tributary valleys, similar to till shadows (Coates, 1966). In periglacial conditions, while nivation was widening the tributary valley heads, solifluction in the unstable till was forming the concavo-convexities that alternate with the truncated bedrock spurs. The hierarchy of forms range from minor convexities to small hills on the main valley floor. Thus, the features are primarily of periglacial origin, but owe their development and position to prior subaerial and glacial events. The cycle may have occurred during more than a single glacial episode. The recession of bedrock spurs and the valley floor convexity of the till features have caused a reversal in stream sinuosity of the main valley. 相似文献

The Upper Cretaceous Juniper Ridge Conglomerate (JRC) near Coalinga, California, provides a rare, high-quality exposure of a submarine channel to overbank transition. The facies architecture of the JRC comprises a thick, predominantly mudstone sequence overlain by a channellized conglomerate package. Conglomeratic bounding surfaces truncate successions of interbedded turbiditic sandstones and mudstones both vertically and laterally. Thick-bedded, massive sandstones are interbedded with conglomerates. Facies architecture, palaeocurrent indicators, slump features, sandstone percentages and sandstone bed thickness trends lead to the interpretation that these elements comprise channel and overbank facies. A vertical sequence with conglomerate at the base, followed by thick-bedded sandstone, and capped by interbedded turbiditic sandstone and mudstone form a fining-upward lithofacies association that is interpreted as a single channel-fill/overbank system. Three similar lithofacies associations can be related to autocyclic processes of thalweg migration and submarine fan aggradation or to allocyclically driven changes in sediment calibre. 相似文献
